Guys, what is the best approach. I accepted an ission offer towards the end of last year. Now, I recently got an offer in another school which I want to accept. I guess I have to reject the previous offer.
Any suggestions on how to go about it will be appreciated. Thanks

So much subjectivity in Eniolakiite's opinion on this issue. The argument is all one sided and sometimes she presents her opinion as if Trump told her personally why he took the decision. We have to be objective about these things, immigration and politics are wide and complicated topics that lots of people will not understand. In my case, I read about analysts views on reputable media and I read from different point of views; e.g. dems and Republicans
The USA issued about 450000 green cards throughout year. Let us assume it will be the same this year. This is still April, and if only those already in USA can apply for now, that will still be a small fraction of 450k. That is just a small number of people that we are adding to the 22m Americans that has apparently lost their jobs.
You should ask yourself whether it is a political move or not

Good write up, however, I don't think it is as easy as you are presenting it to be. You also have to understand that unless someone is just starting their academic journey at the undergraduate level, the advice might not be for everyone. For people seeking graduate ission, we all have our different undergraduate background, qualifications and prerequisites. So not everybody can just wake up and say they want to do engineering courses and selected courses in management science. For example, I don't think someone who studied Chemical engineering as an undergraduate will just opt to go for a biology or public istration master's. Likewise, I don't think someone with an arts, humanities or istration background can navigate themselves into a graduate study in engineering. If you have a way around it, you can as well share. I know a lot of people here think about like in the US after studies including the success of getting a H1-B Visa, following your defined 'ideal pathway' might not be easy for some
SilentPistol:
Hey guys,

I see a few people here applying for courses that would barely provide opportunities here in a bid to just leave Nigeria.

I understand we all have our goals and aspirations. However, If you’re paying out of your pocket, I’m not sure a Master’s degree in Biology, Public istration & co. puts you in the best position of opportunities here in the USA. Even if you aren’t, you may need to have a rethink and properly strategize.

Arriving the US is only the beginning. You’ll need internship(s) at some point. You’ll need a job at some point. And as we all know, things are getting more & more stringent.

To work full time, you’ll need to find a company that’s willing to file a H1-B petition for you & that does not come easy, especially in non-competitive fields. It can even be very challenging finding a company that would let you use your OPT as work authorization.

If you also think you can arrive the US, get married to some citizen within a few months & have your work authorization, please have a rethink & do your due diligence. Every PR filing now has to be accompanied by a I944 (Declaration of self sufficiency) & this document has been designed to easily detect sham marriages & reduce number of qualified applicants.

It’s better paying through your nose for decent courses in engineering (Industrial, Electrical, Mechanical), IT, select management sciences, than being fully funded in Biology, Public istration, etc. You won’t understand the implications till you’re stuck & forced to start all over. Look for cheap schools & do something that would afford you a lot of opportunities.

A word is enough for the wise.

The school probably haven't received your scores. The time between scores being sent by ETS and the school receiving it varies. My advice is that you should inform them that you have requested that your score should be sent and also attach your unofficial score report
Sammiel:
Greetings to the house. I recently applied to a business school but after completing the application my application checklist has toefl check box unmarked despite the fact that I added the school's Institutional code during my Toefl registration. The school is now telling me to get all items on the checklist sent before a specific deadline. My question now is if I am supposed to inform the school about my having requested that my Toefl scores be sent to them by ETS?
sonofakin: 4:16pm On Feb 15, 2020
Thank you
Mykaelolalekan:
No deadline was stated in the offer.

sonofakin: 9:18am On Feb 15, 2020
Please, were you given a deadline to pay the £4k deposit?
Mykaelolalekan:
It is through a Skype video call. You will be called at your appointed time. The questions are not structured. Just to examine your listening skills and how you can flow during conversation. In my own case, I was asked the following questions:
1: why Teeside University?
2, why studying s and Finance?
3, Talk about your memorable Journey you have ever embarked on?
4, What are the things you wish Nigeria government should improve on the transportation system..
It is an interactive session. Not really a difficult one. I was a bit nervous before the interview but the flow was ok as the interview progressed.
I scored 80 for listening, 80 for speaking at the end.

sonofakin: 6:55pm On Feb 12, 2020
I was going through Teeside University page for my desired course. I would love if you can shed more light on some things that are not clear
1. The course is supposed to run for two years and the tuition is £13000. What is the payment plan for this. Will one be required to pay the whole tuition at once?
2. They stated they have some scholarships which is on merit based on undergraduate GPA and English proficiency score. I could see that their preferred English language test is IELTS even though they accept others like TOEFL. Do you have an idea of how they compare TOEFL for scholarship consideration. I saw something on their site about having an interview with the English language centre.
Thanks
Tobexin:
It been a while I have commented on this platform. I have been very busy here in Teesside University and I have been trying to adjust to the new way of learning out here. Anyways I will be dedicating some couple of days to reply any nairalander that wants to come over to Teesside come Sept 2020. Like I said the mail attached to this moniker is not functional. You can post all your enquiries here and I will find time to answer all.

A lot have been said from different angles on whether people should continue with the US struggles or not. IMO, it should be a matter of individual perspective. If you have the experience and really want to help, you should give your advice and also back it up with your constructive arguments. Just giving instructions is not the right way to go about it. We are all educated adults here, even as parents, we should not just tell our kids what not to do, instead, we need to explain why they should not do them. The most annoying part is that a said individual even suggested that the thread should be closed. I think it would be better if you channel your energy on the Canada thread and advise aspirants how they can successfully get in. This is the internet era and even if most of us has not left the shores of Nigeria, we know countries with good immigration policies. We know about Canada and Australia. We also know how difficult it is to get full funding in Canada, how expensive Australia schools are and how tedious the Canada Visa process is.
I got an ission into University of Manitoba last year which also came with a scholarship worth almost 50% of the tuition. Very easy ission process, no English proficiency test, no GRE. I wrote the Dept whether there I can get an assistantship but it was all futile. Again I reviewed the Visa process and even though I got someone who wanted to put the $5400 CAD and the 1000CAD living expenses into my parents , the fact that decision can take very long (sometimes even between 6months to 1year) made me think twice. I decided not to go ahead to apply for the Visa, mind you, I know even if I set my mind into it and with some money, I can get into Canada via another means which is PR or a work permit due to my profession- atleast 2 people around me did it at the time.
Most importantly, my dreams got bigger and I asked myself why I should even bother to pay a dime to get an international education. So I decided to write GRE and TOEFL and I have been on the journey since then and I trust God to perfect my efforts. Mind you, some of us are actually considering other things like our research area too which we might not get in other countries. Another reason I know why people consider US, especially those whose highest level of education is a Bachelor's is also because of the post-baccalaureate PhD that a lot of US schools offers. My point is we all have our different reasons for choosing a particular country for studies.
In summary, those who are giving advice should not be discouraged and they should please also back it up with cogent reasons. Prospective students here should also try to take their time to do their research, think about the pros and cons and make sure they have convinced themselves it will be worth it before going forward.

Oh..It was why her reply was that way. Mail the graduate coordinator about funding and the funding package
bayocanny:

No, my intended program do not require applicants to secure a supervisor.
Thanks for your suggestion, I appreciate.
sonofakin: 5:09pm On Jan 28, 2020
Does your intended program require that you should secure a supervisor prior to applying? I am asking because from the Professor's reply, she did not seem to be taking responsibility or making a commitment. I don't know the content of your initial email. However, try sending one where you agree with her sentiments regarding the Twitter issue. Also, tell her 'point blank' that you want her to accept you into her lab and ask if there's any funding. You can even ask for the funding package. Additionally, try to send your application in asap and make sure she is included in your SOP
bayocanny:
Hello my people.
I sent an email to a professor in my department yesterday, i explained how one of her research resonates me and how i can use her research approach to complement mine. I also critic her work.
Luckily, she replied.
I need your guidance on how best to reply her, have not done this before and I no wan fk up na why I dey ask for your inputs. I really need this RA.
the attached screenshot is her response.

Thank you. My concern is that the estimated living expenses on their page is about 19k (14.5k for room & board and about 5k for travel, books and miscellaneous)
lordeoregon:

Congrats on both your ission and GA. If they waived your entire tuition, and it's just semester fees or health insurance you have to pay then that should be great. Usually GA stipends (if 20hrs weekly) factor in the monthly costs of living in your town/city, so you should be fine. I school in TX, and monthly stipends after tax is 1338 which is very decent for a student here (with a few hundreds left if boyz no too ball that month ). I even heard one gets a refund of certain percentage of taxes paid after filing tax returns, interesting....

So all you need are funds for your first month expenses, and a genuine bank statement for the visa interview. Cheers Baba.

DMainMan:

You dont need NARIC. Most UK schools know about our WAEC.

What he needs to do here is to apply for A levels. If you have money, you can apply to university but your child will start from foundation which is one year before university.

Your child can even do A level exam in Nigeria and enter university directly. https://qualifications.pearson.com/en//-topics/understanding-our-qualifications/find-a-pearson-centre.html?Country=Nigeria&City=Lagos&QualificationFamily=Edexcel.
If he does Unilag diploma, he can study directly in some UK universities (https://unilag.edu.ng/?p=4629).

Just concentrate on your child having dependent visa as he must be less than 18.

Thank you
Vicas2000:

Trust me. UK schools are not hard to get into and should not be a worry.

The focus should br on getting him the dependent visa. He has less than 3yrs.

A brother of mine missed out on this coz they applied too late and he was refuses twice.

Everything else is easy peasy. Apply for visa fieat
sonofakin: 9:53am On Dec 23, 2019
Thank you for your reply. The boy is 15+ and yes he ed WAEC and NECO.The plan is to apply for his VISA by January. We are just looking for the right and affordable pathway for him to continue his education. Someone said he probably will need to use naric to evaluate his waec result to compare it to the UK GCSE equivalent. I am not gettiing a lot of info from some college website I viewed.
Vicas2000:

How old is the boy? If he is near 16- 18....please tell your friend to quickly apply for that dependent visa before he is past the age.

As for the education aspect. This is simple. When He arrive in the country he can apply to the nearest college in the city where they live in.

I would imagine that the boy has ed his WAEC...neco or GCE. If yes...he can apply for A levels directly.

He can also apply for a higher education access diploma.

UK schools are very accommodating and easy to get into unlike naija schools that make things so difficult and there are many routes and they help students to get into school as well.

Hello house, I don't know if this is the right channel but I'll be glad if someone here can answer my question.
A family friend recently moved to the UK on a work visa. He is planning to bring his teenage son who just finished sec school here in Nigeria to the UK as a dependent.
The problem is he needs advice on the boy's education. The right path for the boy to continue his studies in the UK. He wants him to attend a college there but needs advice on the requirements. Thank you

I sent it myself.
If you know the courier guy that is going to help you send your official transcripts, liaise with them that you want to add your original certificates with the documents so you won't need to pay for courier service twice.
sonofakin: 8:49pm On Dec 17, 2019
Oh not anytime soon, my ission is for fall 2020
About your original certificate, was it sent from your university or did you send it yourself?
Timilehin3:

When is your visa interview?
sonofakin: 7:15pm On Dec 17, 2019
Congratulations you. I was also given an ission by Uconn and was told I need to also send my original certificate. How did you navigate this?
Timilehin3:
Visa Approved @ Lagos Consulate
Interviewed at Window 3. I had like 5 straight denial before me. The guy on window 4 was just sharing yellow paper like Christmas gift, I saw like 11 people.

I returned all glory to God for the favour.
Going to UConn, PhD Chemistry, Full Funding.

I just got an offer of ission for a Masters degree September 2019 entry yesterday and have started putting my documents together for study permit.
