4 THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE YOU PUT SOLAR S ON YOUR ROOF

1. Do you have a roof that can SOLAR S?

This is key. If your roof is covered in shade most of the day throughout the year, it might not have favourable enough “solar window” to justify the costs of s. That’s something you’ll want to assess before you move forward. If your roof won’t cut it, or you can’t make the call because you rent your apartment or live in a multi-unit building, you don’t have to give up on solar power altogether. Instead of not installing at all you can go for a solar carport.

If you do have a suitably sunlit rooftop to work with, Weissman says, make sure it’s in good shape structurally. Solar installations these days can come with warranties for 20 or 25 years. If your roof will need a renovation a few years down the road, it’ll be easier to take care of that before the array goes up. That way, you won’t have to pay in extra time and money to disconnect your s during the roof renovation and put them up again afterwards.

Lastly, envision the future of your yard. If the roof is unobstructed now but you’ve just planted a battalion of leafy oaks around your property, you might run in to trouble a few years down the road. Be prepared to prune your foliage to keep the s clear.

2. Have you done everything you can to improve efficiency?

The amount of solar energy you need to produce depends on how much you use, so it makes sense to trim your usage as much as possible before paying for all those s. Start with an energy/Load audit and look for efficiency upgrades before you draw up blueprints for going solar.

3. Which kind of solar makes sense?

The two dominant solar technologies to pick from are photovoltaic, which uses arrays of cells to turn sunlight into electricity, and thermal, which uses sunlight to heat water or air for use inside. If your home uses a lot of energy for heating, or you live somewhere where heating fuel is expensive relative to electricity, a solar thermal investment could break even sooner, says the engineer Timothy Wilhelm. But, he adds, solar thermal is rarer for homes, so it might be harder to find a qualified installer.

4. Is your installer trustworthy?

This applies any time you hire someone to come into your home, but solar combines the logistics of a home improvement project with the risks of electrical work. Credentials and references are especially important. “You wouldn’t hire an electrician who had never done electrical work to come into your house and change things around,” says Kelly Larson. And this is a big expense, so don’t be afraid to get a few different quotes before you ink a contract.

This is harder to predict, but, ideally, you want a company that will stick around for the lifetime of your installation. Since solar cells don’t have moving pieces, they tend to need very little maintenance, Larson says. Still, if anything does stop working during the warranty period, you don’t want to realize that your installer isn’t around to fix it.

How to Choose a Solar for your use (Part 1) #DIY

1. SOLAR COST

This is probably the first factor people consider when comparing solar s. The solar cost is determined by different variables:

-The physical size (square meter)

- Energy capacity (watt)

- Brand (company and country of production)

- Quality of the materials (mono or polycrystalline),

- Durability (warranty period) and

- Certifications of the solar brand.

A key guide in choosing solar s is to consider the cost. However, it should not be the one and only factor to be considered, since the least expensive might not be the most efficient and probably not the best option if you consider the long term. How to choose solar s can be risky but, they have a long lifespan (more than 25 years), so it is more important to ensure good quality system than choosing the cheapest option.

2. SOLAR QUALITY

Take to mind how the is manufactured, and the quality of the materials used to build the solar . There are different types of manufacturers producing s that differ in quality, price, and efficiency. There are vertically integrated solar manufacturers which control each stage of the production process. They put a strong eye on quality and invest a lot into research and development (R&grin). There are other manufacturers that only assemble s, but usually do not manufacture their own cells and do not invest in R&grin. They use more human production than robotic but produce the most affordable s. One of the companies that produces good and quality solar s are
TRINASOLAR.

3. Durability

This could be an indicator of the company’s confidence in its products. Usually, solar s have 25-year warranty. If the manufacturer does not offer a long warranty period, this could be an indication of compromised quality and hence they do not want to take any responsibility. In this case, be careful not to be misled by a tempting price this may be a long term regret.

4. Size

There is need to take to mind the physical size and the capacity in Watts. Ensure a system that is big enough to power all your appliances is installed, and there is enough space for the installation. The physical size of the will vary depending on how powerful the system is (the more Watts, the higher the number of wafers, the bigger the ) and the type of solar cells used to build the .

Watts are related to the output of the (a 200-Watt will generate 200 Watt-hours each hour under ideal conditions while a 100-Watt will generate 100-Watt hours) and they are directly related to the price of the system. The wattage of the solar is probably the most important thing you need to get right since underestimating the number will lead to lack of energy and overestimating the wattage will lead to spending more money than you need.

How to test your battery at home, to know if damaged or bad (Part I) DIY

1) INSPECT THE BATTERY

Sometimes you can tell if your battery is bad by simply taking a good look. There are a few things to inspect:

o Broken terminal

o Bulge or bump in the case

o Crack or rupture of the plastic

o Excessive leaking

o Discoloration

Broken or loose terminals are dangerous, and can cause a short circuit. If a short did occur, there would be some indication of burning or melting. When a battery short circuits, all of the power is unloaded in an instant. That produces a lot of heat, and sometimes even causes the battery to explode.

If the battery is still intact, but there is a bulge in the case, this is usually a result of being overcharged. Others signs such as physical openings in the case are often caused by mishandling. Cracks, splits, and holes will not cause a battery to stop working, but for safety reasons the battery should be labeled unsafe to use.

With wet-cell (flooded) batteries, water levels have to be maintained. If they are low, usually refilling them with distilled water will help. But if the battery has been dry for a long time, it can cause a problem. When the plates in the cells are exposed to oxygen, it rapidly causes sulfation to build up. Sulfation is the number 1 cause of early battery failure. Plus, charging a dry battery will burn it up. If your battery has plenty of fluid in the cells, but the color is dark, or brownish, this is also an indication of a bad battery. Even if one cell is brown, it is rendered useless and therefore the entire battery is, too. Time to REPLACE YOUR BATTERY!

SOLAR POWER SYSTEM
HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SOLAR INVERTER SIZE SUITED FOR YOUR SOLAR POWER SYSTEM (PART 1)

SOLAR INVERTERS are known for converting DC Voltage and DC electricity created by your solar s to the AC voltage electricity used by your home appliances etc.

Choosing correctly or sizing a solar inverter is an integral part in any solar system installation. To understand how inverters are sized you must understand how inverters are rated.

Let’s quickly get on the way………

The first one is the continuous watts rating

Continuous watts are the total amount of watts the inverter can indefinitely. A 3000-watt inverter can power up to 3000 watts continuously. A bigger inverter size could handle more.

For your inverter to be right for your system, it's watts rating must be approximately equal to your solar system's watts rating. This is the correct way to size an inverter.

Therefore, if your SOLAR SYSTEM is rated at 4000 watts, you'll need a solar inverter with about 4000 watts, maybe a little bit more. But not too much more or the efficiency will drop.

If you want to run multiple appliances at the same time and want to make sure your inverter can handle the load, just add up all the Continuous Watt ratings of all the appliances that may be running simultaneously.

Depending on the total continuous watts you get, you can determine if your inverter can handle it.

The second way SOLAR INVERTERS are rated is in Surge Watts.

Surge watts is the amount of power the inverter can for a very short time, usually momentary. A 2000-watt inverter rated at 4000 surge watts can handle up to 4000 watts momentarily while starting things like motors - which usually require more power than normal, to get started.

For your inverter to be right for your system, it's surge watts rating must be approximately equal to (or greater than) the potential surge watts of each appliance.

You can find this out by looking at the sticker on the back of all the appliances you will be using with your solar system and checking the potential surge watts of each appliance. By doing this you can determine the minimum surge wattage you'll need your inverter to be rated for. Usually, you'll need about 1.5 to 2 times as much surge watts as continuous watts for a good measure of surge protection (more, if powering heavy duty equipment).

Therefore, if the highest surge watt rating on any of the appliances you plan to use with your solar system is 4000, you'll need a solar inverter with a little over 4000 surge watts.
