Unsurprisingly, James Cleverly impressive showing at the conference has given him a boost and the others predictably lost due to their poor showing especially KB. Key lesson, politics is a popularity contest, never underestimate the power of rhetorical prowess.

My prediction - JC & RJ to go through to final vote (as I expect Tom’s 20 votes to sway towards Jenrick or Cleverly, but we shall see).

Except the vote hasn't gone to the public yet- it's not a popularity contest until the final 2 face the hip. For now it's all about tactical voting among the MPs and Cleverly's camp might lend votes to Jenrick because they know they have a better chance of Cleverly winning the hip vote against Jenrick than against Kemi.

It's time the truth about immigration went mainstream. Enough of the lies. The commenters are frothing at the mouth. Lol.They do not like the reality. More articles like this should be written in the daily mail.

Yes. Incidentally, she resigned over the Frank Hester comments and the party's inaction on them - exactly the same things that Badenoch described as 'trivial'.

Goes to show very clearly that beyond the attainment of high office, having principles (or lacking them as in Badenoch's case) is a completely separate thing.

Lol I thought so.

It's a shame that she's resigned as she has been very vocal about xenophobia and institutional racism, specifically Islamophobia, in the Tory party for many years.

The cynics are pointing out her resignation coincides with her being notified that she was about to be formally investigated for allegedly using divisive language. She's also got a new book coming out called "Muslims don't matter".

In 2014 she resigned from Cameron's government over its position on the Israel -Gaza war and post resignation she was able to campaign against selling arms to Israel and other issues concerning Palestine, so hopefully this resignation will allow her advocate more strongly and freely for the issues she has long called out.

Edited to add that Warsi's comments confirm that she resigned over the forthcoming investigation and not over Frank Hester. Politicians and principles eh...

She said the case was "due to be conducted in private behind closed doors" and so she "felt it appropriate in the circumstances to resign my whip and look forward to dealing with these issues openly and transparently".

The fear of Reform is the beginning of [un]wisdom.

Some say best to head them off by being more wild-eyed than they are and giving vent to more deluded flights of rhetoric; others say best to reclaim the centre ground and preserve the Tories' reputation for calm-headed statesmanship.

Badenoch wins on the first premise, Cleverly on the second. I'm hoping strongly for the second, but expecting the first.

I largely agree with you.
The issue is that despite the Lib Dems arguably inflicting more harm on the conservatives, top runners for party leadership appear more focused on moving further right to fight Reform. Yes, Reform had a decent showing with the popular vote as expected of a populist party (similar to UKIP of 2014) but these protest votes were thinly spread and largely non-effective. OTOH, many Tory constituents of 2019 (i.e get Brexit done) opted to vote an ideologically different party (which was looking at returning to the EU) than go hard right with Reform.

Regarding Kemi, I feel she put jumped the gun by thinking being a finalist as a given hence targeted recent statements to appease the hip of the party who would eventually vote rather than fellow MPs. It appears many MPs did not take kindly to those statements as she has failed to consolidate votes. It would be a lesson if she falls short.

Hehe.

The difference in headlines when such popular data-based stories are reported throws light on where major UK media houses lean. One can tilt so far while remaining 'impartial'

The dominance of deaths over births was described by economists as “a stark reminder of Britain’s demographic challenges”. With student- and migrant-friendly cities ageing more slowly or even getting younger, and rural villages ageing faster, policymakers will face divergent demands to provide more social care in some areas and more school places in others, said Charlie McCurdy, an economist at the Resolution Foundation thinktank.

The headline and reporting from the Guardian paints a different picture I.e we need them.
Reminds me of a conversation I had with an conspiracy theorist during the riots. I was quick to remind him that Britain is in an 'enviable' position where birth rates were well below replacement figures. I.e., if no/little immigration occurred the population would quickly begin to fall and reminded him how that'd mean less traffic, huge jump in pay, less crime, cheaper housing e.t.c. Chap was looking bewildered. Proceeded to explain how this is very easy to achieve by ending/capping study visas, care visas and limiting the total number of work visas issued to say 20k. Then asked him why no government over the last 2 decades has taken any firm step to achieve something so easy. Funny enough, he was educated enough to not be convinced doing that would make his life any better.
The next 2 decades should be an interesting one to live through.

Others have cautioned on here against suing your employer/other unless you have a solid case:

He accused the hospital of race discrimination, the hospital alleged that he was "extraordinarily lazy", belligerent and extremely rude to staff.

Not only did he lose, he also has to pay £20k in costs undecided

If you really believe that Warsi resigned over the Hester comments (which came to light several months ago), and not over the investigation into her conduct which was launched the same week that she announced her resignation, then I have a Caribbean island to sell you for only £1,000 grin

Poor James wasn't paying his tithe..
There was a polemic against him in yesterday's Telegraph by one of the high priestesses, and it appears that MPs sat up and took notice.

Justice isn't cheap, unfortunately. And you must have a very strong case to get a KC to agree a conditional fee arrangement with you and even then you pay expenses and costs .... justice may be blind, but she likes money.

In other news, care costs strike again. Not a surprise to me as I sometimes find myself haggling with social care staff to fund care or with folks who think it's my job to supply them carers. I feel for some social care staff though... they're being squeezed on both ends.
'Care authorities' grin

The spiralling cost of social services is eating into the budgets of England’s largest councils to the extent that many will soon be forced to abandon “nice to have” functions such as arts and youth clubs and Sure Start centres.

Council leaders are concerned town halls are at risk of becoming “care authorities” focused primarily on the provision of care packages to an expanding number of at-risk children and frail adults at the expense of other services.

Some top-tier councils are already spending as much as 70-80% of their annual revenue budget on adults and children’s social care – up from about 50% a decade ago – and say costs in these areas are rising and increasingly unsustainable.

Lol, but dont think that's true. Poor old Jimmy Dimly, they're already mocking him with unproven rumours and dancing on his grave. He's not that silly - if he'd planned such a campaign surely he'd at least have ensured he had enough votes to go through before distributing the rest to Jenrick.

Well, he's gone and its now time for Badenoch and Jenrick to compete to unload slurs upon the "immigrant" community and all the bum wipers out there.

EDIT: I honestly think that Badenoch is still in with a chance if she confines herself to just refighting the culture wars and worshipping Thatcher.

The social care crisis is a looming snowball gathering mass and hurtling down towards everyone and they act as if it isn't there. The UK's aversion to so-called tax rises at play as usual. The country cannot nationalise the problem just like that - Labour was right to scrap the care costs cap, that's ridiculous, so the next step is to levy more tax to set up a care system like 's consisting of a pooled risk long-term care insurance system with social insurance contributions collected from everyone. No other way forward - the councils will soon go bankrupt.

You appear so invested in this Tory leadership contest. Great! Were you that interested when Labour were doing theirs?

In any case, I would like the Tory party to have a sound leader who will provide robust voice to His Majesty’s opposition.
