Hi guys... just another quick question. I finished B.Sc with 2.89 CGPA. Is this worth giving a shot or i shouldn't bother myself since what they want to see is an outstanding portfolio?

Yes Powerprep will do. By diagnostic, I meant any full test that will simulate test day scenario.
"Yocket" on Playstore/ appstore, input your profile, then search for schools.
Decisions are decentralized-numerous factors determine ission/funding. All the best man!

Does PTDF actually consider 2:2 graduates? Has any 2:2 grad been awarded scholarship before now? I'm just curious.

Thank you sir/ma. I really appreciate the input.

Hello md17, I have to say I agree totally with dmajor1, however I must warn you I have limited knowledge of your field.
In applying or preparing for grad school the key thing is being honest with yourself and believing in yourself at the same time. This helps you strengthen your profile in areas you can and also in putting your best foot forward. While most programs prefer 3.0 GPAs( of 4), it never guarantees ission. My advice:

- believe in yourself and trust God
- do your research on schools that have your desired program, you can have a spreadsheet for this
- ace the gre, toefl
- make sure your sop details your research, experiences and skills
- Try to get recommenders that can corroborate your research and work experience.

No idea what biotech entails (too tired to Google wink) but go for a course that has something in tech especially for US schools, or at least good prospects in years to come.

Good luck

Thank you very much sir. I really do appreciate the detailed analysis and recommendation.
dmajor1:
Bro, you have had a fantastic experience so far. I personally think whatever we do, we should look at what it'd do for us and how we can use it if/when we eventually return back home. The reality of the Nigerian situation as it is today is that everyone else aside Medical Laboratory Scientists are locked out of clinical diagnostic laboratories. Pharmaceutical microbiology on the other hand doesn't sell so well. I have interned in a pharmaceutical firm before and the reality on ground in the quality assurance department is that the ratio of chemical analysts to microbiologist is like 5:1. Some organizations don't even have microbiologists at all. They let the Chemist's, biochemists or pharmacists do the job. In view of this, I'd run from clinical laboratory science. Pharmacology on another hand is a degree that doesn't sell well in this country. The best jobs that most of them do is medical sales representative for pharmaceutical companies. If you want to know what I'd do if I'm in your shoes, I'd go for that degree in biotechnology. I know you'd ask why. It's simply because of its interdisciplinary nature. With biotechnology, you have many options. It's like chemistry. With it, you can decide to delve into renewable energy, environmental engineering, health care, public health, drug development, food science and many more. I think a masters degree in biotechnology would really open your eyes to limitless possibilities. But then, you're the one that know what you want out of life. The decision still rests on your shoulders.

In respect of your CGPA, it's below the 3.0 that most American schools want for graduate studies but I have seen people in the last few days who got in to their choice programs with a CGPA as low as 2.71. Their secret;

1. They started their preparation early.
2. They aced GRE and TOEFL.
3. They researched many schools and sent alot of mails enquiring about their chances.
4. They packaged their applications well.
5. They were tenacious in their belief.

You can do all these things. It's not always about your grades alone. Your experience can count for alot. Sell yourself well and trust God for the best. I believe that this is not impossible. Good luck with your preparation.

I advise you call BY Mafit to reschedule your test.

Yes, Magoosh also has a 90-day GRE prep schedule. I can't emphasize taking a diagnostic test enough. It's very important.
I think I understand where you're right now.

Here's a timeline you (as well as other Fall 2019 hopefuls) may consider: Disclaimer: discretion is advised!

April: TOEFL - After 1 month of prep. ( 2 weeks is enough to get decent scores. Heck, I had a manageable score with about 10 days of prep). Within this time, research schools you'll be applying to. Don't waste the free score reports. Consider ission requirements, faculty in your interested research areas, funding scene, etc.
Suggested TOEFL materials: ETS free materials and notefull.com

July: GRE - After 3 months of assiduous prep. Apart from the diagnostic test. Consider taking at least 3 full tests simulating exam situation (write the essays too) (that's 1 every month).
Suggested materials: Magoosh videos, the 3 ETS official guides, Manhattan 5lb for quants, Magoosh flashcard for vocabs, Princeton review for verbal, "Ready4" app on Android/iOS - for prepping on the go, etc.

August: start the application process, apply for transcripts if required, inform you recommenders (it's advisable you give them 1 month notice + gentle reminders)

September/October: LORs should have been completed by now. Start submitting your applications...

For starters, share your profile with the house. Now is the best time to seek clarifications to your doubts. It'll be tough to get responses once Fall 2018 hopefuls resume. All the best!

How much for the magoosh ONLY?
smoothblaise:
Please I clearly put that the magoosh gre access code for 6 months is for sale and not free. Some people sent me a PM and said it is too costly. Well #10,000 naira for a 6 months access and also additional magoosh offline lessons and solutions with other free pdf books it's not costly. I did my first Gre and had a poor score of 302 with a study for 4 weeks without magoosh. Trying to improve my score that why I bought the access since I would not have time to study effectively due to work. So please do not PM me if you are not willing to pay.

Please what do you mean by the current state of Pharmacological research??
pierre92:

Looked in the direction but decided against that because;
1.Most deadlines have ed for PhD issions
2. I am not excited by the current state of pharmacological research. I will still put in some applications as backup though.

Thanks for being realistic. I'm actually working and in a postgraduate program.
Xiadnat:

Actually, this girl is 'respectable', smarter and more realistic than you. At least she told you upfront that she is not mature enough, and you are not either to be in relationship with her.

She could have agreed to date you but end up "cheating" on you down the road.

Then, you will be back her with "my girlfriend is cheating on me" epistle-- when you 'coerced' her to be in date you in the first place.

What you "feel" for her is not love. All you want is the idea of "being in love" and "being in relationship". You also want to shag for free.

What's left to do is mind your own business- since you can't be friends with her.

Face your studies. Get a proper education. Learn a trade and work on yourself as a person.

When you are ready, you won't have to be 'confused', it will just happen.

Now, respect yourself and get a grip on reality. Don't you have more pressing issues to worry about over there in Nigeria (like how to survive) than worry about a girl? Clod.

She's a graduate, and she started her first job some months ago. Part of my being ive is evident by the new job she got. I really ed her all the way till she finally got her employment letter.

I plan settling down in 2-3 years time. I wouldn't know if this matches up with her time frame.
pocohantas:

Okay. If that's the case, then she needs a little reassuring. I once felt that way, not because I had all the time in the world...but I didn't want distractions. It's not like you're coming to ruin her life, we've always accused ladies of being parasitic and using marriage as poverty alleviation. Yet when we see one who is willing to better herself, we don't encourage her.

Is she an undergraduate?
Does she really strike you as one with a drive?

I like the age gap between you two. Are you planning to settle down soon. Is she also looking to settle down in same time frame? I wouldn't want a situation you guys work things out, then date for 7yrs...leaving room for issues and break-ups.

md17: 8:25pm On Aug 03, 2017
Well, in her words " I want to focus on bettering myself before I allow any man into my life". It sounds like I'm coming to ruin her life. I've actually been a plus to her ever since we met.
pocohantas:

What do you want us to say again?

I don't know what she means by 'enjoy her single state'. I would be impressed if she wants to focus on bettering herself in every area of life. I would also be impressed if she stays off casual sex in the proposed 2yrs. Anything short of that, she is confused.
