COPIED
Embassy: Abuja Embassy
First Attempt
School: East Tennessee State University
COA: $42K
Deficit: $6,720
Course: Masters in Computer and Information Science
Window: 11

Honestly it was just God who intervened for me.
I wanted to get my i20 on time, to be able to secure a visa appointment date.
So before I got my i20, I submitted my uncles bank statement , because it was such a hassle getting my mums own from the bank. So I used my uncles own, because I “heard” I could always update it.
But that wasn’t the case for me. I reached out to the International Students Representative, asking if I could update my i20, but she declined severally.

It was a concern, but I had to go with what I had.

Interview proper

I was the first to be interviewed by the VO this morning. So he was on his feet the whole time.

Interview:
VO: Good morning, your documents

Me: Here they are please

ed it to him and then he asked me to excuse him for a minute. 1 minute turned to 5 minutes. But I didn’t complain atall. I needed the time to loosen up a little bit

Interview:

VO: where are you going in the US

Me: I am going to East Tennessee State University for a Masters degree in Computer and Information Science, focusing on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. I will also be working with Prof. ****** on Developing AI powered natural language processing solutions for software applications.

VO: Are you married?
Me: No I’m not

VO: Any kids?
Me: Nope.

VO: You have a COA of $42k. How will you be funding that?
Me: I have a GA that covers my tuition in full and 70% of my living expenses. (As I talked, he looked through to confirm). My Uncle, Mr. *****, will be covering my deficit. (I wanted to go in and explain he didn’t let me)

VO: Do you have a bank statement? Because a lot of people come here saying a relative is sponsoring, but it’s always a lie.
Me: Oh, ofcourse I do. (I ed it, then he asked for another minute. He took the bank statement somewhere then came back after a minute or so and said everything looked good)

VO: Have you been to the US before?
Me: No, not the US, but I’ve been to other countries.

VO: Can you mention?
Me: I mentioned a long list.

VO: Do you have relatives in the US?
Me: No I don’t

VO: (Repeated the same question of where I’ve traveled to) Which countries have you been to again?
Me: I repeated again, in the exact same order lol.

VO: How many siblings do you have?
Me: I have just a sister

VO: What do your parents do
Me: I told him

VO: What will you be doing after this degree?
Me: Firstly, I would be reing my team at ******, as the lead AI/ML Engineer where we would be kickstarting the integration of AI and machine learning into our software solutions. The skills I am going to gain in Deep learning frameworks and Natural Language Processing would be a game changer in helping us take on more ambitious projects. Secondly, I would be devoting more time to my baby, it’s a blockchain startup. My vision is to make use of AI to automate compliance and regulatory tasks, tackling pressing issues like money laundering.

VO: Ambitious
Me: (while smiling)You can say that

VO: You can’t enter the United States until 30 days before resumption….. Ah I didn’t hear anything again for real!!!

It was after he said this that I noticed he was even wearing a Man City Tag. After he gave me my white paper, I said “God bless you and up Man City!”. We both laughed and I left.

God is so good and he keeps his promises. I’m grateful to my system fr!! I can’t over emphasize this. You really can’t embark on this journey alone. And I’m glad God placed people in my life to help.

Good day to you. I already told you were you should apply; you don't hold a status there in SK, hence your study permit is likely to get refuse.
anyanchinye:

Thank you for your response, but is it advisable to apply from Nigeria when I am currently residing in SK. Also my funds are in my SK .
JMG12: 9:48am On May 27
That's where you got a problem; your status in SK is not strong enough; hence, you are not eligible to apply from there. Consider reapplying from Naija or where you have permanent legal status, and also demonstrate strong home ties.

Visitors visa.
JMG12: 1:56pm On May 20
The visa officer is requesting documented financial proof that you can each dependent’s cost of living as estimated. Since your I-20 only shows funding for you, the officer wants to see additional funds for dependents through an increment of your funding, which the school is not willing to adjust, personal funding, or that of a credible sponsor.
Since the school won’t increase the funding, you’ll need to demonstrate that you personally have enough funds to your wife and children.
1. Submitting a personal bank statement showing at least $20,000 in liquid funds.
2. A letter of financial from a close family member (along with their bank statement and a sworn affidavit).
3. Documentation of your GTA stipend, even if the school didn’t list it for dependents.
You may still need to request a new I-20 from your Designated School Official (DSO) for each dependent, even if no extra institutional funding is being added. The I-20s should:
a. Indicate that they are dependents of an F-1 student.
b. Be accompanied by the financial proof you're now submitting.

You will need a cover letter explaining that while your school cannot increase your funding, you have now provided financial proof covering all required living expenses. Attach your bank statements, affidavit of (if using another sponsor), GTA contract/salary confirmation, and the new I-20s for dependents.

Izanghi:
Please, I need your advice. I am currently in the U.S. and fully funded with no financial deficit on my part. However, my wife and two children went to the embassy this past week, and the visa officer told them to ask me to get the school to increase my funding in order to cover the living expenses of my dependents, which is about $20k- 10k for my wife and 5k each for my children.

I went to the International Office to explain what the visa officer said, but they informed me that there is nothing they can do. They mentioned that the school is only obligated to fund the student and not their dependents. I am already a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) in my department.

I feel stuck right now, as the school is not willing to make any adjustments, and the embassy insists on seeing additional funding from my institution for my family.

I would appreciate any advice or suggestions on how to proceed. Should they still continue to try or what, because I am confuse right now on what to do, as the embassy will normally say that people should not come back if there's no change.

Thanks

May I ask what your immigration status is in SK?

Thank you for your response. I have ordered for my GCMS note, I also have $37kCAD on my SK . I will like to reapply when I receive my GCMS note, Please any idea on the documents the VO wants to see.
JMG12: 2:42pm On May 18
I will advise you to order for GCMS note. If you are applying outside your home country, you must consider your immigration status in SK is important. You couldn't use your business to demonstrate your financial capability. Next time ensure to include TCC.

F1 visa interview
First attempt (Approved) ✅✅✅✅✅✅
Date: 15 may 2025
Time: 8:00Am
Location: Lagos Embassy
Program: Double Masters (Media and EMDD) $7k deficit

Before I start, please know what you put your DS-160, and build your story around it. As I was talking he was looking at the DS-160. I am tall, I could see his activities

There was alottttttt of denials, and I just stood confident because I have manifested my visa and traveling to the united states months before, so I was just there to collect my approved visa. After lots of rejection over the counter, I decided to erase most of the prepared answer in my head, and just retain some key points.

VO: Goodmotning, please me your I-20 and your port

ME: Good morning officer, here you go. I was smiling and looking directly at him. (I also make sure I’m well dressed, and my hands were visible over the counter and I demonstrated with my hands well) it’s psychology.

Vo: How many school did you apply to?

Me: Just two.

VO: Okay, I see Ball state, so why ball state?

Me: I went for ball state for two main reasons. First, they have practical labs and hands-on experiences in film and digital media. Speaking with director of media, his research interest in local history is so exciting to me that I knew right there that I would love to work with him. Also the second reason is because I’m an African documentary storyteller, and ball state, in person of Dr Jennifer pallilonis, showed me how EMDD and media can help me achieve my career goals. We scheduled a zoom call, and When I shared what I was doing in Africa, she was excited and willing to work with me, and she even offered me a GA to come study.

Vo: You have a deficit of $7k, how do you intend to fund it?

Me: My brother will be taking care of that, at it’s in tune of less than $10k, he was happy to give me as a gift. Even though I could easily cover the expense, as I have been saving up for my graduate school for the last 5years, he insisted that his is way of ing and showing me how proud he was of me. (I smiled again well)

Vo: What does your brother do?

Me: He’s a senior civil engineer and he was for many multinationals in form of consultancy.

Vo: Okay, good. How many years did you say your brother has worked again?

Me: 12 years now (with a smile)

VO: When was the last time you were in school?

Me: 2023.

What was the highest degree?

B.Sc in Business istration and Marketing (it’s a double bachelor).

VO: Have you travelled out of the country before?

Me: Yes, I have travelled to couple of historical sites in Ghana, Benin and Togo. I do tour guide and take people on this trip to give them historical knowledge about local cultures.

VO: I see, okay. What do you plan to do when you get back.

Me: Because of what I do currently, which is African documentary storyteller, The technical competences I get from the EMDD program, and the practical competences I acquire from the media program, will help me to further research into design thinking and campaign optimization of local history. There are a lot of historical site in Africa that are not getting the necessary attention and because of lack of man power and knowledge in that field, those history aren’t brought into the media space. This degree will give me the necessary knowledge to further my work in that area.

VO: oh so you are a film maker?

Me: Yes, with a big smile.

VO: Have you been to Gaza or Palestine?

Me: No, not at all.

VO: I will be denying you temporarily, but do not worry, congratulations. This is routine, I just need to do some istrative processes on your documents, and will get to you within a week, this is your first time applying to the US, right?

Me: Yes, it’s my first time.

VO: when is your program stating?

Me: August 15th.

VO: I will be keeping your port and your I-20. Congratulations, and have a nice day.

Me: Thank you.

What I notice: Do not rehearse. Know everything about your program, let it excite you. I showed a lot of excitement about my program, my research, what I needed it for. I kept it short and simple. I wasn’t forcing anything or any words. Those that required one word answer, I gave one word answer, those that required expanded answers, I gave expanded answers. During all of it, I made sure I maintained eye when he looked at me, used hand movements, smiled when I get to a point I’m ionate about. I taking about one of the professors documenting a 100-year history of Indiana state. I paused and smiled well there. And I said, that captivated me, and motivated me to work with him.

Good luck.

Request for a new PAL, GCMS note takes 1 month. Don't submit your sponsor's SOA only, you can have your sponsor send the funds to your and submit her documents to proof the source of income, and explain the lump sum that will come from your sponsor.
MOO02:
I got a refusal and a withdrawn application within 2 months
I recently began the process of applying for my study permit. Unfortunately, my first application was refused and the second was withdrawn by IRCC due to an issue with the PAL I provided cos i used itforthe first one that was refused. As a result, the PAL is no longer considered valid and cannot be used for subsequent applications requiring a PAL even though the document clearly states that it is valid until December 31, 2025. I have requested for GCMS note for the first application but yet to receive the note. Do i need to request for GCMS note for the second application that was withdrawn?
My sister is the one sponsoring me and we only ed her statement as POF.
In light of this, I kindly request your guidance on how to submit a new study permit application and what other ing documents do I need to add

Help! Help!! Help!!!

Hello Nairalanders,
I have a CGPA of 2.96/5.0 (psychology) graduated 2021.
I applied to UMassDarthmouth for research psychology and Wayne state for counseling psychology, I almost applied to southern Mississippi but they don’t accept unofficial transcripts and I didn’t know till the deadline was close.

UMassD denied me ission and I’m still waiting for a decision from Wayne state
I sent my application for both on February 13 and the deadline was February 15.

I want to reapply for spring or fall 2026 and I need advice on how to boost my chances of getting ission and funding.

I recently used the free WES calculator and it gave me 2.93/4.0, I don’t know how accurate it is so that I can just go ahead and pay for WES evaluation, I thought of writing GRE but seeing the past questions alone gives me anxiety. I’m also trying to see if I can publish my final year project in a journal, (UMassD told me that I don’t have a publication and my statistics grade is poor hence the ission denial)
I work in telecoms, and my job role isn’t directly related to psychology.

Considering my situation, please what is the way forward and how do I go about it?
What schools can I possibly apply to that’ll guarantee ission and funding for 2026?

Thank you 🙏

Yes, it's advisable to submit your DS-160 form at least 48 working hours (i.e., two business days) before your scheduled U.S. visa interview.
Firstlady999:
Please is it true that you have to submit your DS-160 form at least 10 days before your interview to allow your details to reflect on their system?

You can apply for a normal visit visa, because going to Canada with the intention of giving birth is a different category of visa, which might require additional documents or a more scrutinized process than the normal visit. Some people don't disclose their pregnancy, especially if it’s in the early stage; however, misrepresentation can lead to bans from Canada. If your pregnancy is advanced, you may be asked to present proof of funds of 10,000 CAD to 20,000 CAD to cover delivery. Also, a doctor's note confirming your due date and that you are medically fit to travel.

Desmondola2020:

No, it doesn't have any effect on the visa; how your tuition was paid has no effect. Ensure you attach proof of payment.

No, there won't be any complications. All he needs to do is continuously attach the documents for the name change, such as a publication, affidavit, etc.
id911:
I'm sorry for bringing this up but I just need clarifications from experience bosses here. Due to some "very tough family reasons/issues'', my nephew had to change his name. Middle and surname replaced with a new name. You know, changing name for a female is the norm mostly due to marriage/divorce but for male? isn't clear how embassies see it.

His old port with the old name, (he never used it to travel before though), has now been replaced with the new names after going through the normal but strenuous processes in Nigeria which took over 18 months, maybe probably because he's a man that's why it took so long, I don't know.
Now,
Primary school,
Secondary school,
Higher Institution,
Nysc are all with the old names.

Will there be a problem when applying for ission or anything abroad as certs/transcripts will be showing old names? Will the affidavit for change of name and newspaper publication cover the above or anything needs be done again? Any boss who has got experience on this should advise please. Thanks and God bless.

USA visa interview hint:
1) Don't put the visa officer in a bad mood.
They approve visas based on how they feel, so make them feel good.
One way to do this:
Don't ask them to repeat the questions over and over again
2) Don't give short answers.
According to the law:
The visa applicant is assumed guilty until they can prove innocence.
You prove innocence by providing information.
Enough information to your case
3) Visa decisions are not made before the interview
The interview is the first time they ever look at your DS-160
DS-160 is the form you fill out with all your details before the interview
They use key details from your DS-160 and your response to make a decision
4) Fill out your DS-160 yourself
If an agent fills it out for you, make sure you know everything on it.
Every response you give in the interview must match what's written on your DS-160
5) The visa interview is not a courtroom.
Americans don't like hierarchy
They feel uncomfortable when called Sir or Ma'am.
So the majority of your interview should feel like a conversation with a work colleague
Professional but conversational
6) Your story makes you different
Visa officers interview 100-120 applicants per day
It's very easy to get bored after asking the same questions 100 times
To make it worse, a lot of applicants reply with internet responses
You stand out by telling your story
7) Know your strengths before the interview
Every applicant is different
We all have strengths and "potential" weaknesses
Strengths can be finances, academic merit, etc.
Magnify those strengths in your DS-160 and responses.
cool Be ready to discuss your weaknesses.
But don't be worried about them.
If you have a gap in your DS-160 or a past denial
Don't worry over it; your fear will attract denial.
Instead, prepare what to say if asked about it
9) Make sure you know everything about your sponsor.
- Their job title
- The company they work at
- How much money they make
- How much money they have
It might be uncomfortable to ask them.
But you need to know
10) Don't say "ties" and "home country" during your interview
These words are in the visa regulations that visa officers use
But they aren't used in our day-to-day conversations
The visa interview is meant to be a natural conversation
The consola doesn't know you, so it is what is in your DS-160 and how you respond they use to judge.
It will end in praise.
Folukemi01:
Good morning everyone, please my interview is early next month, pls give me any tips that would help me for the interview

A ban from Canada does not automatically disqualify someone from getting a student visa to the USA or Australia, but it depends on why the ban was issued. Each country evaluates visa applications based on its own immigration laws, but serious red flags like fraud or misrepresentation can cause issues globally.
Australia If the Canadian ban was due to fraud, deception, or criminality, Australia may deny the visa under "character grounds."

U.S The U.S. visa process includes security and background checks. If the Canada ban was due to something serious like immigration fraud, misrepresentation, or criminal history, it may show up in global databases or during interviews. Your friend must answer truthfully. Lying can cause a permanent U.S. ban. There is still a possibility for him to be granted an F1 visa.

Congratulations @ Olumide 135. Please I have a question and I would appreciate candid views. My course mate (we study together in a university in Finland) has a ban from Canada but intends to study in Australia or USA as an exchange student wants to know if he would not be rejected on that ground. (Our school gives opportunity to study for a semester or session at another university outside Finland)

A response "I am obtaining an MBA to improve my leadership, strategic thinking, and business management abilities. I have a background in Bleep and valuable experience name your present role and work in Bleep. I require formal training in finance, operations, marketing, and global business strategy to advance to senior leadership or entrepreneurial positions. An MBA will help me close that gap, broaden my professional network, and return to my home country better prepared to run and build firms.

Good day everyone,

Please I need clarity/ guidance on my next application. I’ve been refused solely on financial grounds.
So now, I’ve paid my complete tuition and I’ve started the process of GIC to cover living expenses. Also, I have about 25m to cover flight and miscellaneous which has been in my for about 5-6months.
My dad is my sponsor btw. So my question now is, after proving the source of funds with land sale document (Deed of Transfer) his employment records (appointment letter and Payslips)and business records (CAC and Tax Clearance), do I need to submit his statements again?

I added 2 inherited properties in my name valued at 88m (one of which is rented and i stay in the 2nd with my wife and son). Documents submitted includes:
Statements and reference letters from banks
Work appointment letter and ID
Affidavit of gift deed from wife (12m)

SOP/LOE

I reapplied showing same amount in my s as well as a GIC in canada with 10k CAD deposited. It's over 6 weeks with no updates. Please are there any additional documents I should via webform?

NB: I have a job that pays 300k monthly with a reputable organization, i receive a combined annual rental income of 2.5m

Both universities are good. However, you should consider the tuition fee, not just the graduate assistantship only; the tuition fee will enable you to determine the financial involvement that will be sufficient for you and your family. More importantly, please look at career progression which of the programs align with your career.
Winnyluv:
Please, I would appreciate your honest opinion. I’ve received two MSc offers: one from Carleton University (Migration Studies, which includes a graduate assistantship offer and $4,000 in funding) and another from the University of Manitoba (Peace and Conflict Studies, 6,500. No Graduate assistant offer). Based on factors like location, cost of living, and overall experience, which university would you recommend I choose? I plan to move with my husband and children.

Finance is something you will deliberately plan, beginning from your I-20. Ensure you talk smartly and boldly about your finances, and you should know that it's already in your record what your dad earns.
Alvinaknight:
Good day all. So I’ll appreciate any help concerning my issue. I went for my visa interview last month. I’m going for a one year. 2nd degree nursing program and it costs about 70k. Both my dad and uncle are going to be paying for it but on my ds160, I said I don’t have relatives abroad (because my uncle got his immigrant status from being a student first) so I don’t want that to affect me at all, so I stated that just my father will be funding . On getting there, the VO asked for my sponsor’s annual salary and I said the truth, intending to say he had saved up some more for my education (the one he has saved up being the part my uncle will contribute). Her countenance changed immediately I said his annual salary and she denied the visa. Now I want to go for another interview this month and I’ll appreciate any help from anyone regarding what I can do regarding the situation. Thank you.
