Gabry:

You dont need to sound so sarcastic. let me remind you that I am not a Nigerian and Im not aware of what gifts your people would like thats why I came out with this thread. if you dont think its right, just say "I dont think its appropriate to give so and so instead of laughing hard about it really" undecided

And what is a Guinea Brocade

Where exactly are you from Gabry? angry so I know how to give you the right reply to this and also educate you more about "my people" that you're marrying into - their likes and dislikes. Brocade is an English word, even you should know that, check it in the dictionary.

She might not find guinea brocade or lace materials in malaysia, I might be wrong

Is she in Malaysia now? Then she takes the money to Nigeria and buy it there, might even be cheaper.

Gabry:

I have bought his baba a compact easy carrying travelling bag cause his father works as a long distance driver and he always packs his stuff but unfortunately he uses a plastic bag to travel or a worn out bag due to the rough condition of his working environment.

His mom, I bought her a leather wallet.

Very funny! Am ROTFL. Is this some kind of a joke or is this for real? All the way from (where are you Gabry?) - a carry bag, a leather wallet, for your in-laws at Xmas? you think our people would appreciate those kind of gifts? What will Mama do with a leather wallet, keep her credit cards and notes in it? I bet she would end up giving it to somebody else and hating you for giving it to her.

I would think 10yards of Guinea Brocade for Baba (it's not that expensive) and a small Lace material for Mama would gladden their hearts at Christmas time and they would be pleased with you. I wouldn't give them a carry bag and wallet especially at Xmas time. To me, it's inappropriate. The others don't matter much to me.

Forget it, you don't need to do that, your Marriage Certificate is your change of name. Except of course you're married traditionally and you don't have one, or this is your second marriage and you need to make the information public. I didn't know that men too change their names on marriage!

Pardon me. Maybe they only had wedding ceremonies and no engagements proper, so they choose to wear both rings thereafter.

paule:

Should i repeat myself again?

ROTFL.
coolier(f): 5:00pm On Aug 11, 2010
Because they have two rings, one for engagement, one for wedding. One is supposed to wear both, but for reasons known to some people, they wear only the marriage ring.

Did you not do History in school?
Their forefathers are descendants of runaway or freed African slaves who found their way back to Africa. The English surnames ed on from generation to generation are those given to them by their masters who found it condescending to call them by their African names.

but I was refused on the basis that I could not demonstrate any connection to my country

So can you 'demonstrate' your connection to your country now? because you're single, you have no reasons to return home and your blood sister is a UK citizen, you can decide to stay on. And if back then in 2007 as a final year undergraduate, you simply could not substantiate your claim to being a student, would you be able to do that now for your 'regular source of income'? undecided

megeness:

I am resident in Dubai and I just finished my first degree in a British institution.

Are you resident in Dubai or on a student's Visa? because those are two separate things and if you're legally resident there I see no reason why the British High Commission would refuse you a visitor's visa to UK because you apply for a Visa where you live and if a student, I see why not, most especially as you're studying in a British institution.

But if on a student's Visa, UAE laws require that you leave Dubai on completion of your studies. 'Leave' translates to retun to your country, so if you have completed your degree programme, I take it you're out of status now, so it's time to pack your stuff and get out of there, you're not on transit and no Embassy would approve your Visa if you're in a foreign country illegally.

megeness:

But can I still apply with the company , its in my father's name

A Company's cannot be in your father's name, it can only be in the name of the Company, your father might be a signatory like you said.

To the best of my knowledge, an L category Visa is a type of work permit(non immigrant) that allows foreign companies also operating in US to transfer certain classes of employees from their overseas branch to USA operations. I suppose if you have that, you're entering US legally to live and work, so your pregnancy is in order. But then you don't want to be far too gone in your pregnancy before you board that plane in order not to give the wrong intentions, you're resuming a new job, ? not coming to US on maternity leave.

Not strange. See below on Immigration and Asylum Chambers:

What happens when an appeal is lodged?

When the IAC has recorded your appeal they will send a Notice of Receipt to the visa section that refused your application. You should enclose all additional ing documentation with your appeal. When the visa section receives the Notice of Receipt, an Entry Clearance Manager (ECM) will review the decision to refuse your application in light of your Notice of Appeal and any ing documents. If the ECM is then satisfied that your application meets the Immigration Rules, the original decision may be overturned, and entry clearance issued.

If the ECM does not overturn the decision, an ECO will write a statement to explain why the ECM decided to uphold the decision to refuse your application. This will be sent with all your papers (the appeal bundle) to the IAC. The appeal bundle will be prepared and sent to the IAC within 20 working days for non-settlement cases and family visit cases. For settlement cases, the papers will be prepared and sent within 60 working days. These timings exclude postage and times to or from the visa section.

Hotel policies differ and in some cases, one doesn't need any form of payments at the time of booking except during the peak periods - summer, Xmas, when hotels are jam-packed and one needs to guarantee reservation. So what you need to do is search for hotels in the city you're visiting and make a reservation online, you will of course get a confirmation/reservation slip with your name on it, which you can print out and take with you to the Embassy, just in case the interviewer asks for it.

The consulate know for a fact that one doesn't necessarily have to pay for hotel reservations in advance, but they're not going to tell you that, so it's up to the applicant to educate them in a most confident and intelligent manner. The moment they realize you know what you're talking about, they soft pedal.

But then of course if you have a credit card, you can use it for the booking since you're going to be staying in the hotel anyway, but don't use somebody else's. Goodluck.

Mai Suya:

My deepest condolences to the bereaved . . . however, did I hear 3.3km? I wont describe myself as athletically inclined, but I have personally done about 4km before. I doubt they were in the best physical condition before they started the race, and to think a hospital had given them a clean bill of health.

They are training to become soldiers; a profession that demands the best physical state. Its only logical that the circumstances they will face when (if) they eventually assume duty be equivalent to the rigors they are made to undertake during the traing process.

If it is 10km, then that probably was a bit too extreme.

Good talk here.

In other words, should there be some sort of referral to the old port (e.g. the old port's number) on the new port?

That used to be the case then, when one gets a new port, it's usually stamped with the inscription "Previously travelled on port nos ******* which has been cancelled and returned to owner". But with the new e-port, your old port is just cancelled without prejudice, and returned to you to be attached to the new port when you travel. Valid Visas on old ports are not cancelled by Nigerian immigration and they are still legal to be tendered for travels when attached to new port with same name, same date of birth.
