This is an option. However, as you said, he has to like programming. Software Dev. is not like most other courses. Solving problems takes a lot of time, and it's not everyone that has the patience to sit down coding for hours (or even days), to try to figure out why something is not working.

Concerning your education stuff, if you feel starting again is too much stress for you, you could try out IT. Most especially software development. There are various coding bootcamps available over there.
Just a suggestion if you have any interest in IT and starting again would be stressful.

Nice approach FrankNetter. Don't let it bother you. Most of the credits received in Nigeria for just about all majors are not accepted here. The education system in Nigeria is a joke! I have spoken to some so called computer science graduates from Naija univ, and they have never written a line of code. How in the world can that be possible! Computer programming is all about coding for God's sake!

I looked at the course outline for nursing, it included anatomy and physiology 1 and 2. I asked if I could take a placement test for those at least, to take some credits, she declined. Even my GSTs from my first year in school, philosophy and logic, civic education etc etc, she said they can’t accept any of them.

I thanked her for her time, stood up and while walking out it dawned on me, I had wasted 6years of my life, studying in that school for nothing.

Those are normal questions those folks ask as long as you do NOT have a US or EU port. Carrying a Nigerian port does not help much either. If anything, it may cause more scrutinization.

I see mention above of BA ticket being changed to AA. They are airline partners/code sharing so that happens often. On my last trip to Lagos last month, the return trip from Frankfurt to Chicago was operated by United Airlines. United and Lufthansa are partners.

Fellows - Please take some time to read. This was discovered to be fake currency. I have already posted this above. As mentioned, this is a documentary. I watched it on Netflix. At the end of each episode they summarize how each of the segments in that episode concluded. It was mentioned that it was FAKE CURRENCY!

Yes, all the resources one needs are online. Veteran developer here 19+ years doing Java. The landscape is constantly changing, so one needs to keep learning. I do not mind it though. Probably one of the best decisions I ever made was to start learning Java the moment heard about it.

Bingo! I could not have said it better. I have posted the same thing in other similar threads. Bottom line - You have to do what most of the others shy away from. That is where the demand is. IT (software development), engineering, Nursing, Doctor, etc. Most of those finance, ing, etc fields are difficult to break into. Same thing here in the US. Because even the US/UK citizens with degrees from good schools have a hard time breaking in.

My POE experience goes thus royal air maroc wasn't bad after all i will give them an 8 star ranking. I had 3hours stopover at casblanca morocco the plane was full to the brim everytime I think Nigerian and Americans really like the airline to cut the long story short after an 8 hours flight over the Atlantic we arrived new York around 7pm we had to que but later the cops told me to go to another que I was interviewed by this cute African American girl she was nice and polite but she questioned why I had not paid for my hotel she asked why i did the booking only so I was told to go. So after getting my luggage I was told by another woman she asked to see my port so I removed it from my jacket and gave her immidately so she told to go and I was stopped again by another cop who checked the same document after leaving there I decided to put my wallet, ports, my wallet, my ATM port, drivers license and other valuables in my hand luggage that was my biggest mistake, i left the airport after taking my first two step I was stopped by this huge guy who told me to stop and follow him becauseI thought he was another cop so I was followed him to his escalade he was actually a cab man so he told me he was ready to take me anywhere at first I was nervous because I thought to my I don't even know you but later i summoned courage and followed him after like five minutes drive we got to the car barrier so he told me to give him money I told him my wallet was in his trunk so I gave him 100$ and he paid 35$ and he gave me the change. He said I should pay him 350$ I thought he said 35$, he was adamant about the amount of money. So later he started saying the money was not his, later he started threatening me that he will call the police he said I should give him 100$ first I gave him then later he told me too add 250$ I didn't not answer him so I told to drop me off which he did immidately little did I know the newyork train station was opposite JFK airport I asked for direction so I went inside because this is my first time in new York i missed my way i walked aimlessly for about 2hours finally I got into the train and after like 7mins I got to new jersey train station and I asked a black dude where I could get a sim card because my stupid Airtel sim that I roamed wasn't working my luggage was already spoilt becsuse i was walking aimlessly everywhere so begged a cop to help me kerp my bag I also told a black dude to help me watch it i was gone for about five minutes when I came back my hand luggage was gone. The luggage contained the my wallet, my ports., 2 phones and other valuables so I reported the matter to the cops they told me they will check the security camera. I just got back from there right now they said the police report will he ready on Friday. Model of my long story is American cops don't like black at all so be careful with your belongings. You can pretty much learn these things on your own. All the books/tools you need are available freely on the internet. You just need a computer and off you go. It will take some time and effort of course. Tons of info inn the programming forum.

IT and the medical fields are 2 of the hottest fields right now. Project Management is definitely a good one to get into as well. Especially if you can get the PMP certification (I thinks it's called the same in the UK too). I am US based, however I have family there in the UK. My younger brother is an IT project Manager. And he is doing quite well. Social Work or Management are okay, but finding a job in those fields may not be easy.

Don't waste your time swapping sims. Even though you got it from UK (which uses the same LTE bands as Nigeria), that particular device is the US version. It only has the LTE bands used in North/South America - LTE band 2(1900), 4(1700/2100), 12(700).

Yes. For example, Java has its own certifications. C/C++ will surely have their own. As mentioned already, certs alone may not cut it. You really have to know the material. I did not do my first cert until about 4 years into my programming career. I did the certs to learn and to further my career.

I think all you need is your high school diploma (WAEC or whatever it's called these days). And the license of course. Which as Frank mentioned, takes about 4 - 6 weeks of training.

In general, it's safe to say that programming/software Development./Application Development/Web Application Developer are all used interchangeably. At least here in the US. I have been doing this for a very long time (mostly as a consultant/contractor and probably before some here started walking ), and that has been my experience, as I move from one gig to another.

I agree. The technical interview is critical!! At least on the software development side. So, if you put some certification or skills on your resume/CV, you better be able to back it up. A lot of technical interviews here in the US will put you at the board to solve problems. Usually a tech screen (technical phone interview) will usually weed out those that do not have the skills the job requires. And the face-to-face tech interview will dive deep into your skillset.

I would however disagree on just one point here: "Go for your Certifications"
You even added that it basically adds nothing to your skill set and I see it as a waste of money (for a career in Software Engineering. I can't speak for the others). Without the necessary skill set, a certification is not worth the paper it's printed on and crossing the HR doesn't necessarily mean crossing the tech interview.


And furthermore, any HR that bases shortlisting only on candidates' certifications should be fired ASAP
