Why are we ing this? People beat up Government opposition and we are acting like it us something we need. The pro-government part were spared. It's like 100 people storming the National assembly to beat up PDP and leaving APC. This is absolutely wrong.

Afam4eva: sorry. Chinese is no 1. making it the 5th. Arabic studies has been around since the 80s same as french. I went to an igbo school in Festac in the 90s. it was french/Arabic back then. We had no Arabic teacher. We all took french. Teaching Arabic is NOT the same as teaching the Koran. We took igbo and yoruba. Does not mean i can read an igbo or yoruba book. We learn enough to exams. There are millions of Muslim in Nigeria. if they choose to learn Arabic, that's their choice. It will not be made compulsory. If you want to advocate for more french teachers in public school( we can get from Cameroon) or introduction of Hebrew or a language that would benefit the average Nigeria...fine. The islamization thing is getting old and is just silly at this point. 5 Likes 2 Shares |

"How is our baby doing?" "how my pikin" are very common of endearment... Atleast for me. It shows that you consider the other person's kids as dear as if they were yours. Some men just like to address women with sweetie; dear; honey mostly out of force of habit. It may/may not mean anything. Can't wait to see you means can't wait to see you. Since they are close friends as you connote. My point. the conversation can be interpreted differently. Married people should be allowed to have friends of the opposite sex. Some of these friends have been there for years. Are women expected to cut off All male friends completely because of marriage. The rapport will definitely reduce but don't ask women to only have family as the males in their lives and we won't ask you to do the same. 7 Likes |

gimakon: Spoilt (speaking for experience-Bahraini; Qataris and kuwaitis). Majority of them don't work by choice even though they are superbly educated.Yet they all have maids. Under those black abaya are crazily expensive shoes and bags. Protected because they have huge inheritances that the husband cannot touch Islamically and only God will save you if any of their women report you for harassment. This does not include Saudi o. Those ones follow culture not Islamic teachings. 1 Like |

There is a huge misconception about Arab countries. The GCC nations( even though they dey quarell now) actually are excellent places to make money if you are a SKILLED PROFESSIONAL. Coming through labour visa is one of the biggest mistakes Nigerians keep making. You cannot get any good job without upgrading your visa and it is almost impossible to do so. You get no money; live in camps and are really better off remaining in Nigeria. All these agents promising you opportunity will only get you a Labourer visa. We have been singing it, yet people still line up these agents' pockets with money to come and be doing modern day slavery. There should be a Nigerian association in Oman ( we have association everywhere. Let her find their s. They seriously frown at maid abuse in the GCC countries now following all the negative press so someone would be able to be of help. 1 Like 1 Share |

lexy2014: it's ok my brother. We all share diverse views on this feminist issue and it's ok. If I must know, I am also a "meninist'. Once represented a man in court seeking child maintenance from the wife for the three kids. Trust Naija, people...men and women.... were snickering in court but we didn't care. If a woman raising kids can ask for child , so can men. I believe fathers too should get some form of paternity leave too. So my grouses is not simply for women, it is equality for mentry too. Personally speaking, I am grateful to the men in my life. From my father who nurtured me to the peak of academic excellence to a husband who brought me into his field and in his own Nigerian man way has helped me strike a balance between a 6 day gruelling work schedule, kids and home life. Embracing feminism does not mean I have forgotten their roles in my life or trying to be the head of the house. No. 3 Likes |

lexy2014: This is the irritating part about Nairaland. You tend to get unnecessarily personal. So because I use the time we in describing the plight of the average woman must mean I am referring to my personal life. You are right I am decieving myself. I thought I was conversing with somebody intellectual. 3 Likes |

lexy2014: Training of the girl child was a norm in the 70s and 80s. Then it was acceptable. Women went to school in the 80s. My mother is a trained lawyer and she was born 1960. My grandmothers didn't get to school. It was not a rarity to train women in the 80s. Nothing wrong with beingvtrained to be a good and submissive wife as long that is not all a woman is being bred for. See. you assume that because I am a woman, I cannot do "real" work like bring an on site labourer or handle a forklift. Already you have put me in a box of incompetence without knowing my physical capabilities but because I am a woman, I can't do "real" jobs. You see zee problem ![]() You see how you assume my marital status? you keep affirming my position. So because I am a feminist, you doubt that I am married. you see life. And that ends this conversation. |

lexy2014: Doing him a disservice?? hmmm... let me give an analogy. Killing of twins. It was seen as bad luck. The generation who followed the custom didn't think it as wrong because thats all they knew until they were taught differently. Now today's generation are already oriented to know that killing of twins is wrong. Likewise the girl child. Our forefather generation grew up seeing the girl child being trained to be wives and mothers; go to the farm, stream and market. They were not part of the elders. They did not hunt or climb trees or were forbidden from certain festivals. (this is not a blanket statement because i know we have had few woemn leaders in our history). That is what they grew up knowing. imagine a situation where the women who fought for women liberation and segregation in the early 1900s did nothing, there is a huge possibility that the father would be grooming her to be a good and submissive wife. It does not make him a bad person. He does not see it as wrong. In of the African home front, you have to agree that the circumstances is increasingly unfair to the Nigerian woman. Times are hard and both parties need to bring something to the table now. A woman is now expected to contribute to the household, rum the he and train the kids and the man expects the status quo of wife to remain and still look presentable so that he does not "cheat". Women are human too. We are not infallible. Too much is expected from.the Nigerian woman, that's why more and more women are getting radical. We have seen our mothers live lives of servitude and perseverance. We don't want that . we demand a life of balance, of , of appreciation. That's what modern day feminist want. No doubt feminism is grossly misunderstood . Some people think it is about being free to do whatever we like; wear whatever we like and be the chair boss at home. No. We are not looking to usurp the position of the man. We just need men to embrace some subtle changes, just like the people in the 'twins are evil' days and those in the ' women should be barefoot and pregnant" days. |

AyilaraFingar: Ofcourse especially in Nigeria. We may have the right to vote and work now but we are still being held back in the name of "culture". A woman is viewed as a failure no matter how much she has achieved if she is not married. Even though the failure rate of Nigerian marriages is at a whooping 45.92 % in 2012 ( I handled a lot of divorce cases back in the day so this is a high Court statistics). In some cases, we earn less than men for doing the exact same positions. Women are not considered for top military positions even though it is seen as per other advanced countries that women can hold their own on the battle field. Many brilliant military strategists have been the wives of legendary conquerors over history but they are always relegated to the back. For me, the issue of 'bride price' in Nigeria is a major source of concern. Because instead of the average man to see their wife as the girl that they wooed and asked to marry and spend their life with them as ive partner; they end up seeing the girl as someone they have bought and paid for( even if the bride price is miniscule). They become lord and master and claim to have religious backings. They expect the wife to bury her dreams and aspiration and raise their kids instead of striving to create a balance where both of them can attain a level of personal fulfilment. I could go on and on but I think these are some of the modern day needs for feminism. Feminism no be feminazi. I think there is where many men get it twisted. Feminazi want control or superiority. feminists want equity. equal treatment for equal work done. |

lexy2014: You don't get it. But for the struggle of feminism many years ago, Grace Alele Williams' father would not have bothered sending her to school because there was the mentality that girls did not need to be educated. And Grace was all about women empowerment. You should read some of her articles. don't understand why people deliberately misunderstand feminism. You think women want things handed to us. Less than 100 years ago, we could not vote; we could not hold top positions because our "delicate" brains could not handle it. We were better off barefoot and pregnant. I am a senior contract manager in one of the top construction firms in Qatar and the only black female in the entire building of over 300 staff . I know I will not be here today if those women didn't fight and die for the right to be more than house wives. Every body should be a feminist especially men who would only be fathers to daughters. |
