@Esude007

Your weed management is top notch

A few questions please

1. It is evident that your seed is drought tolerant. What date/week in June did you plant your maize?

2. After spraying glyphosate and atrazine at planting, have you performed any other weeding operation subsequently?

3. I know you are meticulous at record keeping. When was the last date/week/approximate that rain fell before you started experiencing rain break in your location

tnx

Esude007:
60 days old.

No rain in this location for 3 weeks now.

Pls God we need rain ...

When maize reaches grain filling stage, any water stress issue reduces yield by affecting:

(1) Cob size

(2) kernel size

(3) Cob length

Thank God your maize survived. If I had known SC719 before your thread, I would have escaped the drought. 3 Acres 70% damaged. I go manage even if na 400 grams seeds I go see grin

Kudos to you elder

sorry I didn't see your question early.

I used glyphosate during the pre planting stage before land preparation.

I didn't use tractor because of the nature of the land ( waterlogging).

But if you're using tractor, I don't thing applying glyphosate is necessary since ploughing is also weeding.

So if you have known you will till the land manually (making ridges), you wouldn't have applied glyphosate as pre-planting herbicides?

Sir, i want you to comment on the nature of your soil,

From the pictures it looks clayey, and the stream from which you got water for herbicide application, does it ever dry up

How water logged is your soil after extreme rain

I think ur maize thrived this long because of this soil, were it 2 be sandy in current climatic condition it would have been somethong else
Esude007: 9:01pm On Aug 15, 2024
You're very correct.

The soil retains water.

That's why I am lucky.

Else, this drought for done do me shege

On this soil sir target feb ending or march, u will sell ur corn at d highest price of the year

Dats d holy grail of corn, you dont need irrigation on this soil, but if u must expand to cover hectares forget irrigation and move to sandy soil where tractors can work then start thinking of storage in grain bins

U tried getting people to ridge dat place, hereru will have to do it at ×3 d normal prixe

Going by what i see I think u will still hit 75% of th3 target yield cos rains have started showering and you will start getting heavy rains by aug 20

Please do me a favor of shiwing pictures of the ground after good rains
Esude007: 7:50am On Aug 16, 2024
Okkkk...

Once rain start, I will share the pictures.

U will see that in between the ridges will be fill for like a day with water.

I will share the picture

Hi Bro,

Please quick question based on the SC 719. While it appears to be ready around 115-140 days ( DRY MODE ), off my assumption, I would like to know if this Maize variety can be harvested fresh at around say 80-90 days after planting if one chooses to harvest fresh

Yes it can but, there is no economic use of fresh white maize, no body buys fresh white maize for eating but if u grew it what stops you from eating fresh corn off d vine before dry down

Way way better and sweeter than 2 days corn u buy on d road

Yes it can be hervested fresh at that date.

But what's the need of hervesting 719 fresh?

I am thinking as a scientist. So it means if rain hatls and SC719 Is at 75-78 days, then one is safe, abi !?

90 percent tasselling...

God bless us with rain..

Esude007:
my questions for you are:

(1) What was your fertilizer Management.

Hybrid maize is nothing without fertilizer just as broilers can't attain the required weight without feeding with formulated feeds.

(2) weed management: did u manage the weed well?

If u know u can't afford to follow GAP, don't plant hybrid

What is GAP

Ur insect management is top notch and ur leaves show no disease signs, constant rain would just give u foliar disease

U just need showers, u will still hit more than 85% target yield

Wow this post is educating.

Op des are my questions.

(1) What is the importance of planting hybrid seed?

(2) why did seed from market fail sometimes?

(3) How did you control the weed?

(4) Are you a graduate of agric?

(5) are you a teacher?

(6) God bless you for making this post, I am planting my second maize now. Any advice for me?

Thenk you

(1) Hybrid seed comes with many advantages,
(A) it is mostly F1, meaning first feliar..
(B) it has high germination percentage.
(C) it has many defensive agronomic packages like( drought tolerance, striga resistant etc)
(D) it has high yield potential.

(2) grains from market are not seed, they are grains, u don't know whether it is F12 or F16. So it is dependant on luck

(3) Integrated weed management system.

(4) yes

(5) yes, a facilitator teaching ND2 and HND2 of a polytechnic poultry farming.

(6) yes . Go for early maturing variety , and follow my thread from the start.

Success boss.
