My second maize farm has tasseled two weeks ago and was supposed to be due for harvest this week. The cobs for the few available are miserably small.

Drought tolerant. But for how long ? I also planted SC510 that is also drought tolerant but for how long can they stay without water/rain ?

I have said it on before that the SC510 yeild is low compared to others. Even their website stated the yeild to be 5 tonnes per hectare.
I harvested some Sc510 from my farm yesterday. The cobs were small

From the pictures at the back u dont have population, if u plant sc510 for fresh market, u will loose , its a good corn cos it can tolerate 60×20 if ur planter xan do it.....
D local maize too is a Good variety for interplanting with cassava, local variety hates popukation even with recommended dose of fertilizer
Stop selling ur sc510 fresh, peel the cobs and u will see dat u cant get to the root of the cob in 1 bite but dos local one have big middle stick thats y d cobs are very big

Here's a rough breakdown of the maize growth stages:

- Germination: 7-10 days
- Seedling stage: 1-2 weeks
- Vegetative growth: 2-4 weeks
- Tasseling: 50-60 days
- Silking (female reproductive structures): 55-65 days
- Pollination: 60-70 days
- Grain filling: 70-90 days
- Maturity: 90-120 days

Sorry I didn't respond to you before now. I noticed some occurrences with my SC510 as well. First the cobs were small, also, majority stopped at having just one healthy cob, the ones that bore two cobs were two small cobs. For this reason, I feel this variety was made for speed and not to optimize profits or reward for labour. Also, most native varieties do far far far better than SC510, so I may not be cultivating it going forward.

I saw adverts on a variety, SeedCo 526, you may give it a try. It matures between 75-85 days and has 40% higher yield than SC510 going by the producers manual.

Thank you for confirming that. I will not plant SC510 again too. I intended planting Sc719 but it was not available then.
It's like I will go back to my premier seeds for now.

I am with you Boss. I am taking notes and will improve on them in my next sessions. I just researched the weather forecast and it suggests that the rains are upon us. I learnt there will be two rain falls this week we are entering and about 4-5 the upper week, so let's get our work tools and materials ready. I am ing you on this SC719 o, only say, to wait for five months. Omo

I used Cypermetrin over and over on my maize, they kept on multiplying seriously. I used DD FORCE too, the same thing.
.
Best 4 armyworm is caterpillarforce and punch. Chlorpyrifos also good

don't use them when the crop has emerged.

When u start noticing new weed, check for this 3 things.

(1) Are the weed broadleaf?

(2) Are the weed shamva grass ( spear grass like)?

(3) Are the weed both broadleaf and shamva grass?

If they are broadleaf, use herbicide that have nicosulphuron ( Striker, guardforce etc)

If they are shamva weed, use herbicide that contain halosulfuron ( cornforce)

If both appear, mix both nicosulphuron and halosulfuron.

Note: apply post emergence when the weed are very young.

Maybe when they have 2 to 3 leaf
.
Will nicosulphuron and the other one kill maize on ?

Pls God we need rain ...

When maize reaches grain filling stage, any water stress issue reduces yield by affecting:

(1) Cob size

(2) kernel size

(3) Cob length

Almighty, pls send rain to farms who need it. I'm a newbie farmer who is still practicing with home gardening. This maize thread has been a course for me. I even have notes of it. Thanks for sharing all the processes. I have learnt a lot from you. May you have a bumper harvest. Amin
