i agree, that is one of the main causes of inflation, making people having more money than they need in their pockets and discouraging savings. Something should really be done about it

lovely written editorial, it is really disheartening. Like the post suggested if these excesses are limited it might help reduce govt spending, highly insensitive. With all d promises by GEJ on reducing d cost of govt. He shld start with himself and his household.

I was a very strong er of Sanusi before, but looking at all d policies he has initiated one ll notice dat he has messed up our economy, d regulation of banks dat ppl praised him for was still part of Soludo's policy, wile he Soludo was introducing d policies in phases dat ll allow for a balance, Sanusi just went on air and said our banks are bad, and u expect investors to still have confidence in ur economy, dat was d beginning of collapse of our financial system. Sanusi smacks of an inconsistent person, first he told all banks to remove deir ATMs frm public places, most banks spent millions of naira to comply with dat directive, now he is telling them to spend millions of naira to deploy them again, wich most banks are reluctant to do cos dey don't no wen he would change his mind also, dere is no long term plan, just fire brigade approach to things. I can recall when u could withdraw N100, N200 notes from d ATMs before, now d main currency is N1000 and a bit of N500 notes wich is rare these days. Across d counter to withdraw money, most of us prefer to be paid in N1000 n N500, cos its easy to carry, and shows y we ve more of d higher denominations in circulation. From d little economics I know, lower denominations will bring abt a higher marginal propensity to save MPS and allow for more money in banks for investments and less money in circulation (cos wen u withdraw higher denomination, u just ve more money to spend), wich curbs inflation.. I will just put out some recommendations for Sanusi -He needs to be focused, what are his long-taerm goals? What target did he set for d economy, what he hopes to achieve in 5 ,10, 20 years. If its cashless policy, stick to it and roll out machinery dat ll achieve dat. -On d coin issue, introduce N1 n N5 coins first, 5 N1 coins can buy buscuit, 2 N5 coins can buy pure water, if u do this and d status quo remains d same, den u can roll out d rest. - Deploy more ATMs wit lower denominations N50, N100, N200,N500 , people need to able to go to d ATMs and withdraw d exact amount needed for transactions, reduce d N1000 notes in circulation, if this works den u can now introduce d N5000 note. I really don't it cos most developed economies use lower denominations but, in life its all about compromise. I asked a prof in economics a question two days ago, if N100 note was our ahighest denomination what would happen, he said most ppl will make a conscious effort to only carry d amount dey need daily and pos, internet bankin and all other forms of E-bankin would be adopted fast. Sanusi should finish with one project before jumping into another, what are we sayin, we don't even have pos in gas stations... |

We are not tackling the main issues, what happened to fixing the refineries or privatizing them. Let the forces of demand and supply determine the prices. No body is against removing subsidy, as long as we have steady power supply, good roads, add rail network to it . I am sure that if private firms build refineries, we will be paying less than the N65 . Just lik OBJ did to the telecom sector. Power, rail and refinery shld be privatised

I blame NLC sef, the are some causes they should be fighting for and not increase in minimum wage, can u imagine what ll happen if Labour down tools for good roads, u can imagine the millions of naira that are wasted on bad roads, we need a good rail network, this will definitely reduce the number of cars on the roads, u can imagine u picking up a train from Ikeja at 7.20am and will get you to the island by 7.50am, there wont be reasons for people to carry their vehicles to work. After the 2nd world war it was the rail system that aided in developing it 2 an industrialized nation. Lets luk at the power sector, the amount we all spend of fuel, our companies spend on diesel, even churches, i know of a church that stated that their budget for diesel in a year is N5million. Me i spend an average of N3,000 weekly on fuel for generator and i am being conservative, that is N156, 000 yearly. We should fight for long term issues that will reflect and not on gratifications, u can imagine the cost u will be saving daily if u had 24 hours lite and the roads are good, then i can confidently tell govt to remove their subsidy |

I think we are missing a point Soludo said, about recurrent expenditure being 114%, Even a layman knows that only capital expenditure can bring about growth, and Aganga as an Oxford graduate should not have prepared a budget like that and still emphasize that, the Nigerian economy will grow. After world war 2 embarked on a comprehensive rail system which is one of their success story till now. You can imagine how much each one of us spend on generator in a month, fuel and time consumption in traffic, any finance minister in his right senses will know that capital investments is what is needed and should not wait for a PAC to tell him that. Three capital investments Nigeria needs now is POWER, An EFFECTIVE RAIL SYSTEM and AGRICULTURE, and not spending all our money on making lawmakers happy. An article estimated the expense of a lawmaker to be N309m in a year and you are asking were the excess reserves is going to? I respect Sanusi alot especially standing up to the law makers and telling them to their faces that they were the problem of Nigeria, but i still dont agree with his radical approach to the banks, I know reforms were needed, but the way he went about it, was one of the problems that affected our FDI, you dont announce to the whole world that your banks are weak, all the noise on the CEOs, should not have been made public, there should have been a meeting between CBN and these bank's CEOs , with CBN stating their , this was the way America did it, the resignations were done secretly, without affecting the trust people had in the banks. How many of us during the crisis would have still kept their money in an Oceanic or Bank PHB, some of these banks are still facing challenges persuading customers. FDI is falling because people have lost faith in the Nigerian financial system. I think Aganga should clarify the issues that Soludo made and let us know where we are heading to, if its govt for the people or govt for the lawmakers |
