ISIS MIGHT BE FACING ITS MOST FORMIDABLE OPPONENT IN THE ONLINE COMMUNITY. After the brutal Paris attack, a group of hackers known as Anonymous threatened to damage the Islamic State’s online presence and they recently made good this threat. Their first attempt was shutting down the twitter s of known Isis’ ers. And they recently made a remarkable effort in undermining Isis’ online visibility. On Thursday, Ghost Sec, an of Anonymous, hacked a website which promotes the activities of Isis. After gaining control of the site, they replaced Isis’ contents with Viagra ads. This is a mockery of the organization which frowns on flaunting sexual conduct in public (they kill people for committing adultery). Anonymous made sure Isis is really ridiculed by posting messages such as ‘Please gaze upon this lovely ad so we can upgrade our infrastructure to give you ISIS content you all so desperately crave’ and even sold Viagra on the site telling s they need the drug to ‘enhance your calm’. Waging war against Isis is becoming a global effort and organizations are carrying out sanctions against them both offline and online. Telegram, an app that was used in the Paris’ attack, blocked a number of channels of s connected to the Islamic State. What is the implication of this for Isis? As part of spreading terror, Isis uses the internet to promote fear and further its cause. They also carry out online recruitment (like every other organization in this electronic world, lol). So erasing them online will seriously limit the spread of their propaganda and cripple their activities. But it is safe to say Isis won’t take this without fighting back. They are also going to take steps to secure their online activities. But will they be a match for Anonymous? Events will tell. If you want to Anonymous in fighting the war against terror, there is a guide on how to effectively hack Isis’ sites. Good luck. Source: www.techthins.com 1 Like |

IF YOU HAVE BEEN ACTIVE ONLINE FOR THE PAST FEW DAYS, you no doubt would have run into ads by different Nigerian stores (both online and offline) offering Black Friday deals. From jiji to jumia, you find posts showing that come Nov.27, there will be a massive price slash on products and consumers are urged to take advantage of the ‘deals’. But what really is Black Friday and why are Nigerian online stores ing the craze? Black Friday is common to Americans. In the US, Black Friday is the day after thanksgiving (another strictly American tradition) when retail stores offer massive discount in prices. This day often kick start the Christmas shopping season and millions throng the shops in hopes of great deals. It is a very busy day as stores open earlier than usual (some open as early as 5am while others have been known to open by midnight). But what is the logic behind the name? Some people feel that the name originated from the sale of Black slaves after thanksgiving. But this has been proven wrong. Black Friday originated in Philadelphia to describe the frenzy associated with the day after thanksgiving. Since major retail stores are offering discounted sales, there was usually heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Black Friday is the busiest shopping day in America, hence the name. Also, the use of the term ‘black’ can be explained from the fact that it is on this day that most stores enjoy huge sales, transforming their ledger from ‘red’ (no sale) to ‘black’ (huge business). Black Friday has come to be a great way to wrap up business activities for the year. It offers mutual benefits to both sellers and buyers; Stores get to enjoy huge customer traffic, while buyers get great deals on products and services. But what is the significance of Black Friday to Nigeria? Granted, stores in Nigeria will want to offer clearance sales to consumers as a way of wrapping up the year. But why Nov. 27? What is the significance of that date to us as Nigerians? I mean it is not as if we mark Thanksgiving Day that the day after will hold any real meaning. I think Jumia and co should not be in a great hurry to mimic everything American. Rather, let them start a tradition for to us by picking a more meaningful day to offer discounted prices. The first Friday in December can be set aside for this. But this is just my opinion. What do you think? Let’s discuss. Source: www.techthins.com |

In this world, there are two kinds of people, those who love tech and those who do not. The former recognizes that tech saves lives while the former feel it can be dispensed with. This type of people can be said to be living in denial because tech permeates every aspect of man’s existence. From communication, transportation, and even nourishment (yes, the hoes and cutlasses used to farm are products of tech), man has elide greatly on tech to improve lives. Advancements in knowledge have led to a great boost in tech, which in turn has greatly make accomplishing tasks even more efficient and effective. Among those who should not ignore the importance of tech is the government. Since they are responsible for improving living conditions of citizens, it is vital that they adopt modern tech as a basic tool of governance. President Buhari came on board with some excellent ideas on how to revive the country’s economy, provide basic infrastructure and generally improve citizens’ lives. To fully accomplish his set goals, he needs to be aware of apps and devices that can make these possible. Let us review some of them: FARMING. The President has always been pro-agriculture. As part of his manifesto, he proposed that farming will be well structured to become a top revenue source for the country. To this end, he recently set plans in motion to enable farmers across the country have access to loans for agric purposes. While this is laudable, it is not enough. These farmers should be well equipped to maximize the potential of agriculture and yield optimum results. They need the right tools. There are certain apps (apart from top notch farm devices) designed to make farmers more efficient and effective: (a). Sirrus – this app helps farmers get an accurate reading of soil sample, check weather conditions (updates and forecast) and scout for crops. With this app, a farmer does not plat blindly but is armed with knowledge on how to achieve best results. (b). Agrivi – this one helps with project management. With this app, farmers are better able to plan, execute and monitor projects. It helps in tracking farm activities, harvest, sales, and inventory keeping. They can therefore curtail theft and waste. Others include the TractorPal and MachineryGuide which helps in regulating farm equipment. It goes without saying that farmers will need to be trained to use these tools. CORRUPTION. President Buhari is basically synonymous with anti-corruption. He continuously condemns corruption and advocates a government run on transparency. How can tech help? The social media can be used to name and shame corrupt practices. Anti-graft agencies can have apps designed to help them be more effective in carrying out their duties. Other items the President floated on his manifesto are: Improved healthcare. Mass employment. Improved infrastructure. Adequate security. One important tech the President will find useful in achieving these is the drone. Using drones can greatly improve security amongst other things. Tech stimulates invention. Therefore mass employment can be achieved if citizens have access to top notch tech. |

Our world is filled with labels – food, clothes, boy, girl, house, etc. These labels help identify and distinguish one item from the other. Imagine living in a label-free world. The confusion would be mind boggling. So labels help us understand our world. But have you ever wondered why some things are so labeled? For instance why did the manufacturers of Blackberry phones pick that name? Why name it after an already existing food? Why name a tech device Apple? What is behind the name choice for iOS? Can anyone help me? But I digress. Android, as most of us know is an operating system developed by Google for smartphones and tablets. But did you know that the word ‘android’ has been around since the 1700s? It originated from the Greek word Androides meaning manlike. In 1863, the term was used in the US to refer miniature human-like toy automatons. It was later adopted by the science world after being made popular by the original Star Wars film. In recent times, android is a term for a robot that looks and acts like a person (some of them can change facial expressions, move hands and feet and twist their body). So how did it become an operating system? Before becoming an OS owned by Google, android was a little company owned by Andy Rubin in California. It was bought by Google in 2005 for about 50 million dollars and developed by Open Handset Alliance to be the great mobile OS that it is today. Today most top notch devices run on this Operating System. Most people like it for its flexibility and the freedom it offers. Why do you use android devices? Drop your comments below. Cyberspace is a fun place to be, right? There you meet lots of people you normally wouldn’t meet in real life and you sometimes get to develop relationships with these ones. The internet is a virtual world filled with lots of drama. Little wonder most people spend most of their time online. A regular online visitor will notice that there are certain types of people you always come across online. We bring to you a number of these: The Philosopher. These ones’ posts are always philosophical. Their social media pages are filled with cryptic messages/quotes promoting one ideology or the other. They use these quotes, copied or original (most times, copied) to appear as deep thinkers. The Wall-Flower. These ones love the social media and its drama but will never participate. They are there on your wall and in your twitter feeds, checking up on all that is happening but rarely commenting. You will never feel their presence online. But don’t be fooled, they are always watching. The Trolls. These ones are quite popular and many articles have been written about them. They are those who take pleasure in causing trouble online. They comment on every posts or initiate posts of their own with the aim of inciting fights online. They usually comment off topic or make inflammatory remarks to incite emotional response from other. They are usually at the root of most twitter/facebook fights. The Show- Offs. These do not need much introduction. They see social media as a platform to intimidate people. Hence, their posts always depict them having a grand time. Whether they are flaunting a possession or a destination vacation, they want you to know they are ‘balling.’ Sometimes, I think the social media was invented for this purpose. Since the ‘I my neighbor’ syndrome is a very strong part of our society, why not take it online? The Haters. Songs have been sung about these ones, quotes have been invented to describe them. They are everywhere on social media and use the cloak of anonymity provided online to perfect their cruel activities. Nothing pleases them. They are not impressed by anything and they are highly opinionated. Their aim is to tear down and destroy. Haters are critical of everything and do not hesitate to voice their discontent in strong . There are other categories of people you would regularly find online. There are those who like everything, repost everything and believe everything. And there are those who just come on to enjoy the drama. Which one are you? www.techthins.com |

I use the Nexus 6 as my daily driver. I love it so much because it fits my style. Its big, solid, beautiful and above all it runs on pure stock Android. However, I have had cause to hate the device recently. One of the perks of owning a Nexus device is that you get latest operating updates as soon as they are available, and as a proud owner of the Nexus 6, I read with utmost joy Google’s official announcement on October 5… “Today we’re starting to roll out Android 6.0 Marshmallow to Nexus s. Of course, the new Nexus 5X and 6P will ship with Android 6.0, straight from the factory. Android Marshmallow is the sweetest, smartest Android version yet: Now on Tap serves up assistance when you need it, battery-smart features keep your device going longer, and new app permissions give you even more control.” “Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 9 and Nexus Player will get an over the air software update** to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. In addition to the new Nexus 5X and 6P, keep your eyes peeled for other new devices shipping with Android 6.0. Finally, we know many of you take your devices to work. To learn more about security and other work features in Android Marshmallow, for the Android for Work Live online event on Nov. 4th. This is just a taste of Marshmallow but you can learn s’more on android.com/marshmallow!” It is now two weeks since that announcement and I’m still stock on the old Android OS! What is going on! I check for updates more than a hundred times a day and each time I check without a new software upgrade notification, my heart skips. Please someone remind Google that there are Nexus s in Nigeria too because it beats reasoning that Nexus s in other countries will get the new upgrade weeks or even months before s in these parts. Has anyone upgraded to Android 6.0? Let us know. www.techthins.com |

A man from India ordered a OnePlus One smartphone from Amazon. He was eagerly waiting for his sleek brand new smartphone which he would show-off to his friends. Finally, it arrived, 30 hours late (doesn’t matter, the new phone arrived at least). So, the guy opened the neat packing in excitement and bam… he got a piece of brick inside. LOL!
