Recalling a mail means the first mail was sent in error or wasn't meant for you. So you can assume you didn't get the rejection mail and still be hopeful.

It won't work. You have to make it Bootable. Search & "Rufus" software then use it to burn the iso file into the flash drive

It was ed straight to my folder on my laptop

Start your laptop(press and hold F2), while on bios screen, navigate to boot sequence, make sure boot from usb is at the top(click apply and exit)
Insert thumb pen, restart laptop and os load should commence, follow prompts.
NB: After all is loaded, change boot sequence back from your bios screen
