Electrical Engineering is more respected than Electrical Technology,But then, the latter knows more theory, more practical and even how to teach the course but the former only knows the theory and practical, how come there is discrimination between these two courses?, Enlighten me to help a brother!

Permit me to say that Nigerian tertiary education is not much to write home about smiley but in the land of the blind, the one eyed man is still king.
First of all let us build the right parameters around your question, the truth like one poster already did here is that you make yourself in school. All this bravado and bragging about which is better or not is all subjective and it depends on what a person is looking out for.
Engineering has been so abused in this country that to a layman a mechanical engineer should be a mechanic, an electrical/electronics engineer should be an electrician but do not let yourself be fooled, there is a place for everyone.

Now lets get to the heart of your problem, whenever you are searching for a school what you look at is not the strength of the school in general but the strength of the department you want to go into, advanced countries like the US have those things mapped out already if you say you want to study engineering in general MIT comes to mind (that na if your brain carry oh, people like us wey get 5 mb nor dey even try am) but if you say specifically petroleum engineering then UT, Texas A&M and all that would come to mind.

Bringing it home, anyone who gives you a flat out name just because they attended the school is bull, you cannot know how good your school was if you do not have a another to compare it with, for all their name and popularity the schools in the west of Nigeria are not really known for their Engineering prowess (save for Unilag I think). To be honest with you generally engineering wise I would pick FUTO and most employers do. I have personally interacted with a lot of graduates from there and its not that I get the sense that their facilities are the best but some how at least the ones I have interacted with mostly know what they are doing. I finished from UNIPORT and I can easily tell you if you that the strongest Engineering department there is Mechanical Engineering (almost 5 profs here highest in engineering faculty)  which I finished from, they have got new young lecturers that would hopefully be up to date and not give you 1985 question papers as revision. This is  followed closely by Civil, the others are average and nothing spectacular, if you want less stress and the highest probability of finishing with a 2:1 then Petroleum engineering in Uniport is the key, their lecturers are lax and do not really hassle students. Electrical/Electronics is not bad but they lack good lecturers, they have got just one fast tracked professor  grin grin but he is the best damn lecturer in that whole university, unfortunately a tree cannot not make a forest, so stay clear. Chemical Eng, do not even go there unless you want to be assured of a 2:2 and nothing in your head afterwards. Environmental Eng, that one is also not strong at all, same as Gas Engineering, plenty of borrowed courses left and right no real lecturers.

Hopefully people in other schools would also give the strengths and weaknesses of their engineering faculties and you can pick better according to your strength and what you want afterwards in school. But in the very end its all up to you to make yourself something out of it.
hw good is FUTO in their Electrical/Electronics dept and their flaws if any?

By Unizik, I take it you mean Nnamdi Azikwe University, Awka (NAU). I would prefer FUTO. You won't believe this but it is true, I have interacted with few engineers from NAU and from my experience (spanning about 6months to 1year with them), they seem to be somewhat unserious with both studies and even their work. They talk more of money every now and then. It seems they teach them more marketing, enterprenuership and hussling than engineering, that is if they teach them engineering at all. Their (the ones I encountered) understanding of basics of engineering is lacking, though I need to quick state that none of them was an electrical engineer. On the contraty, most FUTO graduates that I have met, have been impressive. Some of them have really challenged me I must confess. Furthermore, NAU has 7 engineering courses, and yet I hardly hear of or see a lot of them in Abuja, PH, Lagos. May be most are outside the country or practicing trading instead. In Port Harcourt for example, you see a lot of FUTO guys and RSUST (their graduates seem to be some distance ahead of Uniport unbelievably) and surprisingly FUTA (I do not know why).
This is my opinion. You can undergo a general consultation to get more views. I wish you the best. Cheers.
you are simply more than a brother,

And that does not stop you from working for any firm if you so  wish. With time , you will realize you are more likely going to be a relying point, is that simple, instead of being a relying point to a few, why not many and still make your money?
Bro,that is to say, they teach more of entrepreneurship than engineering or do you in any way mean both?

@talkwisdom
Gone are the days when OAU was always on strike. The last three set sets (as far as i can ) did not loose a single year. You can ask any recent OAU grad u see around. The VC before this present one has corrected all of that.

Let me also add that if you see any engineering grad from OAU practicing, they are always standing out. People will always ask you where did you graduate from.I graduated from the Elect/Elect dept from the school, though we lost 2 years during our time, but I'm still very happy that I graduated from there.
do they have 'circuit design' in their course allocation for Elect/Elect curriculum?i learnt that no institution teaches that course,

Nobody here mentions the great of them all:OAU. Its hard to enter the school, but the engineering training will do you incomparable good.Your life will never remain the same again.Trust me.They have veterans as profs. They had even gone a step forward. They teach you engineering valuation in addition to your core engineering training.Try it and see.

Hey, before you do so, you must make up your mind that you will read like mad though.

sources have revealed that they are always on Strike, whatz your take on that?

If you are not naturally brilliant, do not go for unilag, if you think you can meet up,your best option still remains Unilag, For Real, Unilag will make YOU, Naturally, Unilag expecst you to be an employer of labour after graduating, Note, you can never be all that if you do not know what you are doing, satisfy yourself and put yourself in the market.sell your product as an engineer, the only place that get you started is Unilag
i met a guy who did Elect/Elect Engineering in the said Unilag, but he wasn't practising engineering but enterpreneurship unrelated to his profession, Are they trained to be as an entrepreneur or as an engineer?i yearns for an answer
Talkwisdom(m): 12:41pm On Mar 03, 2012

It is a difficult question to answer. , it depends on what you want to achieve after school. Some university would almost make you an electrician before you graduate why others would simply give you the rudiments and some, the theoretical background. Some people would answers to attract unnecessary attention to their school but challenge them to provide details.

Howbeit, let me give some guidance.
Don't try any of these schools because they is no guarantee that you would graduate from there or even if you graduate they is a very low probability that you would be able to practice engineering. Unless, of course, you want to work in a bank or consulting firms like KPMG, Accenture, or start a non-engineering business of your own.
Anambra State University, Uli
CRUTECH
IMSU
Any university of agriculture (the name says it) - Okpara, UNAAB, makurdi or any other one
Niger Delta University
Olabisi Onabanjo
UNIBEN (this school keeps surprising me, a strong, old generation university, suddenly started playing with its engineering departments and lost 5 out of 8, na wa o.)
Uniuyo.

Some schools over the years have shown some credibility
Unilag (This school is trying but please dig deeper)
OAU (too much strike, even when it is not their business. You might graduate having a disconnect btw part 3 and part 5)
Unilorin (this is school is one of the more stable around. NUC and COREN do not have problem with them. I know SOME of their graduates, and I THINK they are doing well)
The FUTs too are trying (one close to you might be ok) - you need to dig deeper though, some of them have issues with staff strength especially lecturers.
Then the old generation (ABU, UI and UNN). some have also complained that UNN is loosing its value and nearly everything is watereddown.
no private universities (even if you have N10million to spend. If you have such amount of money go to UK, US or even Netherlands. Please Ghana, Kenya and Malaysia are not worth it; in the market, an average Nigerian graduate beats them anytime).

Be cautious with state Unis (except RSUST and Lautech, they are trying). Unless Fashola acts fasts LASU is not worth it for engineering.

One more advice, be weary of people who will tell you this school is stressful, that school wahala too much. The so called stressful schools would make you rugged. Life is rugged, Nigeria is rugged and practicing engineering in Nigeria or even anywhere else is rugged.

Ultimately, the choice is yours no matter what people say. I wish you the best. If anyone has a specific school in mind with reason let him say it.
my mind has always been FUTO or UNIZIk.what do you think bro?
Talkwisdom(m): 8:51am On Mar 03, 2012
tunene:

How do you measure the best? In Nigeria, the only authentic bodies (no matter what anybody says) that can state the best (1st, 2nd or 3rd and the rest) is COREN and NUC. Employers also provide some information, though fraught with a high subjectivity. To determine the best school to attend you would need to ask yourself which programme you wish to study, when you want to study and what you want to do with it (what kind of job or business you want to do with it). There is no university in Nigeria (or anywhere else for that matter) that can claim it is the best in all engineering courses.

As for Uniben's case, did you go to COREN website. The story of Structural engineering and computer is outdated, that happened a long time ago. Electrical/electronics, mechanical and petroleum have ed them in 2011. 5 courses from one school in few years. They is no guarantee that other departments - chemical, civil and production would not soon, especially production. My advice if you are studying any of Elect/elect, mech or petroleum or even production in UNIBEN, catapult yourself to another school as soon as you can, its never too late.

@Poster, please whatever you do, do not attend any private universities to study engineering in Nigeria, you would regret you did. Employers have written to Covenant that their graduates do not take initiative; they wait to be told to do everything. They also do not understand fundamental theories may be they use softwares to teach them engineering. I do not blame them though afterall they need to take permission to go out of campus, they can't use phones and they can't even determine what is good or bad for themselves. What a regimented society, more like a primary school.

which university would you recommend me to study Elect/Elect engineering?

I am not so sure of what applies in recent times however, if you have a good grade, I would suggest you look through the brochure to see what schools require. Mostly, schools in the North may be your best advantage if you do not mind going up North for studies.
thankz abunch man, but which school in the north would you suggest me to go for which does Engineering at its best?,

A BSc(Ed) Electrical Technology is trained to become a teacher. While a BEng Electrical Engineering is trained to become an Engineer. However,He cannot be addressed by the title,Engr, until he has ed as a member of an Engineering Professional Body e.g Nigerian Society of Engineers or COREN.
are you implying that the Bsc(Ed) are not qualified to as a member of Nigerian Society of Engineers to be titled as'Engr.', please enlighten me!, thanks in advance!

Nigerian Association Of Boyfriends (NABs) Dear Girlfriends, Due to certain circumstances beyond our control such as; subsidy removal, Boko Haram, unemployment, non payment of minimum wage among other economic downfalls, we would not be taking part or available during this year's valentine's day celebration. Obviously, our country needs prayer and fasting and all bachelors have agreed to engage in indoor fasting and prayer through feb 12th to 16th 2012. We advice you visit your parents and other family to spend valentine's day with them after all, they are loved ones as well, we wish you all a happy valentine's day celebration in advance, will talk to you after 16th of Feb 2012. Thanks for your usual cooperation, NABS
