Norway says there are risks that Covid-19 vaccinations may be too risky for the very old and terminally sick, after 23 people died within a short time of receiving their first shot.

Of those deaths, 13 have so far been autopsied with the results suggesting that common side effects may have contributed to severe reactions in frail, elderly people, according to the Norwegian Medicines Agency.

“For those with the most severe frailty, even relatively mild vaccine side effects can have serious consequences,” the Norwegian Institute of Public Health said. “For those who have a very short remaining life span anyway, the benefit of the vaccine may be marginal or irrelevant.”

Norway has so far given at least one dose to about 33,000 people, focusing on those considered to be most at risk if they contract the virus, including the elderly. Most of the shots given are from BioNTec/Pfizer, with the Moderna vaccine now also being istered.

England will follow Scotland and go back into full national lockdown, Boris Johnson has confirmed.

Schools will remain closed with the public told to stay at home until at least mid-February.

The UK Prime Minister made the televised announcement amid an explosion in cases and hospitalizations in the country.
Case numbers have rocketed following the identification of a new faster-spreading variant of the virus in the country in December.

England will go back into full national coronavirus lockdown with schools closed and the public required to stay at home until at least mid-February, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Monday evening.

Johnson used a televised statement to announce that the entire country will be placed into full lockdown, with household mixing banned indoors and only essential shops remaining open.

Schools will be closed to all but the vulnerable children and the children of essential workers from Tuesday, just one day after many primary schools re-opened following the Christmas break.

Students will not be expected to return until at least after the February half term, Downing Street indicated.

Under the new measures, of the public will be ordered to stay at home apart from a limited number of reasons, including caring for the vulnerable, exercise, essential work and buying food and medicine.

Amateur team sports will also be banned, although daily exercise will still be allowed with one other person outside your household.

The prime minister had previously resisted imposing another full national lockdown and had insisted as late as Sunday that schools were "safe" to re-open.

However, his statement on Monday followed the announcement of a Scottish lockdown by Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon six hours earlier.

The exponential growth in infections and hospitalizations has come amid the identification of a new faster-spreading variant of the virus last month.

Hospitals in some parts of the country are now more than half-filled with Covid patients, with some hospitals running out of oxygen due to a surge in demand for respirators.

"Our hospitals are under more pressure from Covid than at any time before," Johnson said, adding that there had been a 30% increase in hospitalizations in the past week alone, Johnson said.

Johnson has been under growing pressure to impose a full lockdown.

Opposition Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer on Sunday called for an immediate national lockdown saying the situation in England was now "clearly out of control."

Johnson's announcement is the latest in a series of U-turns on tackling the coronavirus made by his government in recent weeks.

The prime minister had planned to allow widespread household mixing over the Christmas period but reversed the decision in some parts of the country with just days to go before the holiday.

The Education Secretary Gavin Williamson also just weeks ago threatened to take local authorities to court for closing schools early for Christmas because of the surge in infections.

However, just days before their scheduled return on Monday, Williamson announced that secondary school openings would be delayed and primary schools would not re-open in most of London and parts of the South East.

He U-turned again just days later following questions about why primaries in some parts of London had been excluded from the plan.

Johnson's announcement today came after teachers across the country were advised by the National Education Union not to attend schools due to the "serious and imminent danger" to their health caused by the virus.

Teaching unions believe that newly released papers by the UK government's scientific advisory committee last week warning that schools would need to close in order to bring the virus under control, mean any attempt to force schools to open would have been a breach of UK work safety regulations.

A Portuguese health worker has died two days after getting the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine.

Sonia Acevedo, 41, suffered a 'sudden death' at home on New Year's Day 48 hours after receiving the jab. An autopsy is expected to take place later today or tomorrow.

The mother-of-two, who worked in paediatrics at the Portuguese Institute of Oncology in Porto, is not said to have suffered any adverse side-effects after being vaccinated.

Ms Acevedo's father Abilio Acevedo told Portuguese daily Correio da Manha: 'She was okay. She hadn't had any health problems.

'She had the Covid-19 vaccine but she didn't have any symptoms. I don't know what happened. I just want answers.

'I want to know what led to my daughter's death.'

Ms Acevedo's employers confirmed the dead woman had been vaccinated against coronavirus on December 30 and said they had not been notified of any 'undesirable effect' when she was jabbed or in the hours afterwards.

The Portuguese Institute of Oncology said in a statement: 'With regards to the sudden death of an operational assistant from the Porto IPO on January 1, 2021, the Board of Directors confirms the event and expresses sincere regret to family and friends in the certainty that this loss is also felt here.'

It added: 'The explanation of the cause of death will follow the usual procedures in these circumstances.'

Ms Acevedo had worked at IPO Porto, a national and international reference health institution in cancer treatment, research and education, for more than 10 years.

She lived with her family in Maia near Porto but died at her partner's home in Trofa half an hour's drive north of the northern Portuguese city.

She changed her profile pic on Facebook shortly after her jab to post a selfie with a face mask on and the message: 'Covid-19 vaccinated.'

Her father told Portuguese press he got the call to say she had been found dead around 11am last Friday morning hours after they ate together on New Years Eve, adding: 'My daughter left home and I never saw her alive again.'

Ms Acevedo's daughter Vania Figueredo said her mum had only complained about the 'normal' discomfort in the area where she was jabbed but was otherwise fine.

The health worker was one of 538 Porto IPO workers who received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

Portugal's Ministry of Health has been informed.

Portugal, with a population of just over 10 million, has reported 7,118 deaths and more than 427,000 cases.

After a relatively mild first wave, cases rose sharply in the second and have spiked again since Christmas.

South Africa has become the first country on the continent to more than one million Covid-19 cases.

It comes just days after authorities confirmed that a new, faster-spreading, coronavirus variant had been detected.

Some hospitals and medical centres have reported a huge rise in issions, putting a heavy strain on resources.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is widely expected to announce tougher restrictions to prevent the virus from spreading further.

The grim milestone was announced on Sunday by South Africa's Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize. The country has now confirmed 1,004,413 Covid-19 infections and 26,735 deaths since the outbreak began in March.

Last week, South Africa recorded a daily average of 11,700 new infections - a rise of 39% from the previous week - and from Wednesday to Friday the daily number of new cases was above 14,000.

The new coronavirus variant - known as 501.V2 - is believed to be driving the surge in infections. It was identified by a network of South African scientists in the Eastern Cape province and then rapidly spread to other parts of the country.

Earlier this week, the UK banned travel from South Africa because of the new variant. Another new Covid variant has already been detected in the UK , although they have evolved separately.

Both have a mutation - called N501Y - which is in a crucial part of the virus that it uses to infect the body's cells.

After South Africa, the worst hit country on the African continent is Morocco which has seen 432,079 cases and 7,240 deaths. They are followed by Egypt with 131,315 cases and 7,352 deaths and Tunisia with 130,230 infections and 4,426 deaths.

The Lagos State Government through the Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture has revoked the license of Queens Park Event Centre Oniru for contravening the COVID-19 protocols of the state.

The Commissioner for Tourism. Uzamat Akinbile Yussuf who confirmed the sealing, added that the step to withdraw the license was taken in the best interest of the State.

She, therefore, implored other event centres and venue owners to comply with the government’s laid down directives or risk losing their chances of doing business in Lagos.

Akinbile Yussuf reiterated that the fight against the virus can only be successful “if we all follow the laid down public health and safety protocols.”

The Director-General, Lagos State Safety Commission Mr Lanre Mojola, also said it became necessary to take such steps following an event that was held at the venue on December 26, 2020, that contravened all safety protocols laid down by the state.

The DG, also warned all other event centres and venue owners flouting safety protocols in the state to desist forthwith or risk sanction, stressing that “it is not business as usual. As such, they should either fall in line with the state’s protocols or risk losing their license to operate in the state.”

He further stated that the commission has begun a legal process against some recalcitrant business owners who removed the government seal and continued operations.

Mojola stressed that the state maintains zero tolerance towards those that do not abide by the regulations, maintaining that people must take responsibility.

He urged residents to co-operate with the government to effectively curtail the spread of the virus which is still ravaging the world and the state in particular.

Malian opposition leader Soumaila Cissé has died of coronavirus aged 71, his family and party said Friday, just two months after he was released by jihadist militants in a prisoner swap.

Cissé "died in , where he had been taken for Covid-19 care", a member of his family told AFP.

"I can confirm this terrible news. He's dead," a leader of Cissé's URD party told AFP, saying the politician's wife had let him know.

Cissé was snatched by jihadists on March 25 while campaigning in the northeastern Timbuktu region ahead of long-delayed legislative elections.

He was freed six months later in October alongside Frenchwoman Sophie Pétronin and two Italians.

The hostages were exchanged for some 200 prisoners whose release was demanded by jihadist groups.

"I was not subjected to any violence, either physical or verbal," Cissé said following his release.

A former leader of the opposition in parliament, Cissé was runner-up in three presidential elections.

In 2013 and 2018, he was defeated by Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, who was ousted in an August 18 military coup.

Following the 2018 vote, Cissé accused officials of rigging the election, claiming he had won a runoff with 51.75 percent of the vote to Keita's 48.25 percent.

An engineer and IT specialist by training, Cissé studied in Senegal and , where he worked for major companies including IBM before returning to Mali.

Mathias Nnadi, a senior lecturer at the department of surgery, University of Calabar, Cross River state, has died of COVID-19.

The consultant neurosurgeon at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) was said to have initially died of acute exacerbation of asthma while stuck in traffic in the state capital.

His wife was said to have called for an ambulance from the teaching hospital, which also got stuck in the traffic at Odukpani area of Calabar and could not evacuate Nnadi on time.

But a postmortem test carried out on the deceased was reported to have shown that he tested positive for COVID-19.

Nnadi obtained his degree in medicine (MB.BS) from the University of Nigeria in 1994. He was a fellow of the West African College of Surgeons. Also a fellow of the medical college of surgeons. His research interest is mainly in neurotrauma.

Speaking on the development on Sunday, Peter Atangwho, chief executive officer of Telemed Online Clinic, described the death of the neuro-surgeon as shocking.

“Last night I received a text that Dr. Matthias Nnadi, my med school teacher & a consultant neurosurgeon at UCTH, died of acute exacerbation of asthma. Instantly, tears welled up my eyes. But it’s the details of his death that were more shocking,” Atangwho said.

“His wife sent an ambulance to pick him up in the thick dusty traffic where he was stuck. It took more than 3 hrs to arrive due to extremely bad roads & traffic around Odukpani area in Cross River.

“The ambulance that came for Dr. Nnadi didn’t even have oxygen and by the time he arrived the A&E he was already blue, lying lifeless on the stretcher!

“Imagine knowing you’re dying. Imagine knowing what’s killing you. Imagine knowing you could treat it. Then imagine you can’t do anything about it.

“Dr. Nnadi’s wife in O&G dept just birthed twins after many years of childlessness. They’ll never see their father again! Nigeria has few neurosurgeons. Dr. Nnadi was one of the less than 200 in a country of over 280 million.

“When I was in school, he was the only consultant neurosurgeon. We ran to him for mentorship. But yesterday, he couldn’t get oxygen & had to die! Thank you Nigeria!”

Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdullahi Bawa, and the clerk of the House, Abdullahi Kagara have tested positive for Coronavirus.

Both the Speaker and Clerk have since gone into self-isolation.

The Commissioner of Information in the State, Muhammed Idris, confirmed this to Channels Television on Sunday.

According to him the results of the COVID-19 test of the Speaker and the Clerk came in on Sunday, and they both turned out positive.

A member representing Bida 2 Constituency, Haruna Baba speaking with Channels Television said the member representing Gurara Local Government and Chairperson of the House Committee on Gender Affairs, Binta Mamman had earlier tested positive for the virus two weeks ago.

This made the entire legislators and staff of the Assembly volunteer be tested for COVID-19 last week.

He said the results of the Speaker and the Clerk, however, came out positive, while other results are still being awaited.

“We are yet to receive other results. But for now, many of us are in self-isolation,” Baba said.

The official report from the State’s Emergency Operation Centre however shows that Niger State currently has 311 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 12 deaths so far recorded.

Governor Abubakar Bello had in November tested positive for the virus but recovered about a week after.

Meanwhile, the state government in response to the second wave of COVID-19 announced the closure of schools in the state as from Monday 21, December, while all civil servants are to stay at home beginning from the same date.

The Dutch government has put in place a flight ban from the United Kingdom, citing concerns about a particularly infectious strain of the coronavirus in southern England.

The ban, effective from 6 a.m. on Sunday morning, will remain in place until January 1 at the latest, the government said.

Stating it was “closely monitoring developments,” the government said it would consider additional restrictions on other modes of transport and would also coordinate with other EU countries on how to limit the risk of the new virus strain being spread from the U.K. to the Continent. It’s the only country so far to restrict travel.

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Saturday evening announced new restrictions in London and the south-east of England, telling a hastily arranged press conference that scientific evidence suggested the new strain of COVID-19 was up to 70 percent more transmissible than earlier variants.

“A contagious new variant of coronavirus has been detected in the United Kingdom. This strain of the virus is thought to spread more easily and more quickly and is also harder to detect,” the Dutch announcement said.

It said one case involving the variant had so far been detected in the Netherlands — in early December — and was being investigated further.

“Pending further details and greater clarity on the situation in the United Kingdom, RIVM [the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment] has advised that the risk of the new virus strain being introduced to the Netherlands should be minimised as much as possible by restricting or regulating travel from the U.K.,” the announcement read.

“The government wishes to emphasise once again that travelling abroad carries a substantial risk of spreading coronavirus,” it added. “Do not travel unless it is absolutely essential.”

WE CANNOT AFFORD TO RELAX THE BATTLE AGAINST COVID-19

Dear Lagosians,

Compliments of the Season.

Regarding my health, I am glad to inform you that I am getting better by the day, and all will surely be well. I thank Lagosians for their prayers and overwhelming kind thoughts. I am, indeed, very grateful.

I have just risen from a virtual Executive Council meeting on issues around the resurgence of COVID-19 and how we should tackle this serious matter.

The Lagos State Government has sadly noticed that there is an unfortunate public perception that we have seen the end of the COVID-19 pandemic; that the worst is over. This is absolutely wrong and dangerous.

We are getting credible reports that the entertainment industry is planning large gatherings, concerts, street parties and carnivals, in the spirit of the Yuletide. Night Clubs have also re-opened in reckless disregard of the existing guidelines, and Events Centers are operating with huge gatherings without any regard for public health and safety guidelines.

This same disregard for Coronavirus guidelines is also being observed with Places of Worship across the State,
in both their regular gatherings and the special gatherings organized to commemorate this Season.

Dear Lagosians, this overwhelming non-compliance with guidelines meant to keep us all safe is very disheartening, especially when we consider that the message at the heart of Christmas is one of sacrifice and sacrificial conduct; embodied by the Holy Bible in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

Christmas is a commemoration of this supreme act of sacrifice by God. The least we can do in this Season is to emulate that spirit of sacrifice, by abiding with difficult but necessary protective guidelines, for the greater good of all of us. This is certainly not the time to lower our guard against the Coronavirus; it is instead time to step up our battle against this stubborn virus that has gripped the world for several months now.

A SECOND WAVE

As you are all aware, Lagos State is recording an increase in COVID-19 cases in all local governments. This is not peculiar to Lagos alone; the entire country is also seeing an uptick in the numbers of confirmed cases of the Coronavirus disease.

Of every 100 tests that we now perform, an average of 10 turn out to be positive. This is an increase from the 5 per hundred recorded in September, but lower than our peak in August which was between 20 and 30 per hundred. This suggests the existence of active community transmission, and represents the very likely possibility of the emergence of a second wave in Lagos State.

This second wave calls for a full re-awakening of caution and precaution. The complacency that crept in over the last few months as a result of our early interventions when cases started to decline from our peak in August, must now give way to an abundance of vigilance.

TESTING ANDTREATMENT

We are ramping up testing, we have now recently sured the 3,000 tests per day mark, and we will keep raising this number. So far, we have performed 197,000 tests in Lagos State of which 26,000 have been diagnosed positive for COVID-19. Sadly, we have lost 226 persons (May their souls rest in peace). It is important to note that Lagos already tests far more than any other State, ing for 25 percent of the total numbers tested nationwide.

It should be reiterated that Testing in the designated public facilities remains free; the Lagos State Government does not charge for COVID-19 Tests in its Testing Centres. The only test centres where there is a charge are the private ones, and these are for intending travellers and also those who seek to know their status for some reason or the other.

ALL persons who are showing symptoms and fit the case definition for the Coronavirus disease will continue to be tested free of charge in the government testing facilities. Collection of samples for testing remains freely available in our sample collection centres spread across all the Local Government Areas in the State.

The majority of patients are electing to isolate at home, but our public isolation centres – of which the IDH in Yaba is the flagship – continue to remain open to patients.

We are working hard to ensure that all the supplies and consumables required are constantly made available, and we encourage all persons who have tested positive and are showing symptoms to seek care in our Isolation Centres.

Do not seek treatment for the disease in private hospitals that have not been accredited for such treatment.

Let me also sound a note of warning to all private testing facilities that are complicit in the allegations of colluding with individuals to issue fake COVID-19 Test Results. We have zero-tolerance for this kind of criminal conduct, and will not hesitate to prosecute anybody found culpable, in addition to shutting down the offending laboratories.

A NOTE OF CAUTION

Dear Lagosians, you will all agree with me that we cannot afford another lockdown of the economy. Amidst an economic recession we must find a way to delicately balance the imperatives of life and livelihood. With this in mind, the only solution available to us is to take responsibility for all our actions, and to understand that we must stay safe not only for ourselves but for the sake of the entire society.

The data we have – we strive to ensure that our decisions are as data-driven as possible – does not warrant the introduction of a drastic lockdown; we can achieve a lot simply by modifying our behaviour in other ways: reducing the size of gatherings, complying with containment protocols, and applying common sense.

The Lagos State Government is now sounding a clear note of caution to all residents on the importance of maintaining the guidelines that we have put in place to protect us from the ravages of COVID-19. We cannot afford a reversal of the gains we have made against this pandemic.

PUBLIC HEALTH DIRECTIVES

For the avoidance of doubt, the following measures must be noted and complied with:

· All public servants from GL 14 and below, except emergency workers and first responders, are to work from home as from Monday, December 21st for the next 14 days – in the first instance.

· All schools must shut down with immediate effect, and until further notice.

· Concerts, carnivals and street parties are banned in Lagos State until further notice.

· Night Clubs have not been allowed to open yet. All Night Clubs in Lagos must immediately shut down, until further notice.

· The midnight to 4a.m curfew imposed by the Federal Government remains in place.

· The protocol of ‘No Mask No Entry’ must be enforced by all public places: Offices, Businesses, Markets, Shops, and so on.

· All Places of Worship (Churches, Mosques, etc.) must ensure that no gathering exceeds two hours, and also that no gathering exceeds 50% of t[b]he maximum capacity of the Venue.

· All Event Planners must obtain prior clearance from the Lagos State Safety Commission (www.lasgsafetyreg.com) for all events, and ensure that any planned gatherings do not exceed 300 people.

· Where the capacity of a Venue exceeds 300 and permission has been granted, the occupancy shall not be more than 50% of such a venue.

· Ample ventilation must also be maintained at all times in all Venues, and Deep cleaning of the premises must be carried out BEFORE and AFTER every event.

· A minimum of 2 meters' distance should be maintained between seated or standing guests.

· All guests and service providers at events MUST wear nose masks/coverings before entry.

· Hand sanitizers or hand washing units are to be positioned at the entry point and various spots within the hall. Provision must be made for all guests and service providers to wash their hands before entering the venue or use hand sanitizers, as well as undergo a temperature check, which is mandatory.

· Guests and service providers with high temperature (above 37.5) are to be politely turned back and referred to paramedics or the emergency response team that must be present.

· Health, Safety and Environment Officers must be present at all public gatherings (Religious or Social) and must be trained in basic first aid procedures.

· All Events’ Staff must also be educated on recognising COVID-19 symptoms.

· The Safety Commission has been directed to visit Event Centres and gauge compliance with the established guidelines, to stop the virus from spreading. If there is evidence of lack of compliance at any Event Centre, it will be shut down immediately.

· Security agents have been mandated to ensure full enforcement, without exception. No one will be deemed to be above the law.

· Any and all breaches of these regulations and public health protocols will lead to immediate closure as well as attract heavy fines, and any other sanctions and penalties deemed fit, in line with the Lagos State Infectious Diseases Control Regulation 2020.

· Event Centre Owners/Planners/Vendors will be responsible for any breach of protocols by their Staff.

We will continue to closely watch the profile of the unfolding situation, while also awaiting updates and pronouncements from the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19. We will also keep working with the Presidential Task Force to ensure that the gains of the recent past are not frittered away on the altar of festivities and sheer carelessness. The lives of ALL Lagosians, including our elders and other vulnerable citizens, matter.

May I remind you of the importance of maintaining the principles of non-pharmaceutical interventions and measures that are well-documented strategies for interrupting the spread of the disease in our society. These measures are:

· Social distancing, a minimum of 2 meters apart.

· The wearing of face masks at all times in public places.

· Maintenance of personal and respiratory hygiene – regular handwashing/sanitizing, coughing or sneezing into a tissue and properly disposing.

· Presentation for testing at our numerous public and private testing facilities if you experience any of the COVID-19 symptoms.

· Isolation either at home or in any of our Treatment Centres if diagnosed positive for COVID-19.

These measures represent the only way to keep the curve flattened and prevent a full-blown second wave from developing in Lagos.

THE RESPONSIBILITY LIES WITH US

Fellow Lagosians,

Let us take responsibility for the welfare and safety of all while we enjoy the festive season with friends and families. It is important that as a community we strictly abide by the above regulations in the context of a global pandemic, without prejudicing our efforts to keep the economy running and maintain our means of livelihood to a sufficient extent.

Let us use this festive season to spend quality time in small but controlled gatherings with family and friends in the spirit of the season.

This virus does not discriminate. We must TAKE RESPONSIBILITY, and not treat this pandemic with levity.

Let me repeat, as I close, that we will not hesitate to bring the full weight of the law to bear on any person or organization caught breaching our public health regulations and protocols with regards to the Coronavirus disease.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year in advance.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu
Incident Commander and
Governor, Lagos State.

The federal government says Nigerians will receive the coronavirus vaccine by January 2021.

Osagie Ehanire, minister of health, broke the news at the end of Wednesday’s federal executive council (FEC) meeting.

He said a technical working group in the ministry is working on which vaccine will best suit Nigeria, considering that the country has no -80 degrees freezers.

The federal government had previously announced that the country was working on receiving 20 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine in early 2021.

The State Department said Wednesday that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had come into with a person who tested positive for COVID-19 and was quarantining.

The department said Pompeo had tested negative for the virus but was being monitored by medical professionals. It said it would not identify the infected person with whom Pompeo came into for privacy reasons.

The announcement comes as Pompeo and the department have been criticized for hosting holiday parties amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“Secretary Pompeo has been identified as having come into with someone who tested positive for COVID," the department said. "The Secretary has been tested and is negative. In accordance with CDC guidelines, he will be in quarantine. He is being closely monitored by the Department’s medical team.”

Pompeo had been expected to attend President Donald Trump's Cabinet meeting later Wednesday although the appointment was not listed on his public schedule. He had also tentatively planned to meet with President-elect Joe Biden's nominee to succeed him, Antony Blinken, on Thursday. The status of that meeting was not immediately clear.
