A 101-year-old grandma has been discharged from Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, Osun State after she recovered from COVID-19.
The grandma was on ission in a private hospital for treatment before the medical personnel of the hospital noticed she was showing some symptoms of COVID-19 like the acute onset of cough breathlessness, fever and malaria before she was transferred to OAUTHC.
These disclosures were made in a statement by the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Ile-Ife, Prof Victor Adetiloye, on Thursday to newsmen.
Prof Adetiloye, who did not reveal the name of the patient, said the institution has successfully managed 101-year-old woman with COVID-19, noting that it is a record-breaking achievement.
“She is a 101-year-old woman who initially presented at a private hospital in Ile-Ife with acute onset of cough breathlessness, fever and malaise.
“Symptoms started 8 days before presentation. The patient’s clinical condition worsened and this warranted a screening test for SARS CoV2.
“The PCR result returned positive and she was subsequently itted to the OAUTHC isolation centre on 30/01/2021. The relevant findings on ission included poor oxygen saturation (SpO2 90% on oxygen), lethargy, altered sensorium, neutrophil leukocytosis and hypokalemia.
“She was subsequently managed with intravenous antibiotics, supplemental oxygen, high dose multivitamins, zinc sulphate, potassium supplementation, subcutaneous clexane and low dose intravenous dexamethasone.
“The challenges encountered in the clinical management of this patient included; advanced age, frailty, poor sleep and appetite as well as frequent desaturation.
“We closely monitored her as regards vital signs especially the oxygen saturation, pulse blood pressure and blood glucose. She was cautiously anticoagulated and subsequently mobilised on a wheelchair.”
He noted her clinical condition gradually improved and she was weaned off oxygen 6 days after ission and at discharge, she was stable with oxygen saturation at 97% and other vital signs were within normal limits.
“She discharged home on medications and counselled on the need to observe all the non-pharmacological preventive measures against COVID-19.
“The total length of ission was 12 days and she was discharged into the warm embrace of her children and other close relations,” he added.
Adetiloye disclosed that the hospital has managed 255 cases.

Ghana has shut down its parliament for three weeks owing to the rising COVID-19 cases among lawmakers and staff.
No fewer than 17 of parliament and 151 ing staff have been infected with the virus.
A surge in cases had forced the parliament to limit its sittings to Tuesdays and Thursdays — with entry permitted to only MPs and staff needed for those days.
Alban Bagbin, speaker of the house who announced the closure on Tuesday, said the legislature would be in recess until March 2 to make way for “disinfection and sanitisation of the premises”.
“I have, in consultation with leadership, decided that sitting of the house be adjourned for three weeks,” Bagbin said.
Bagbin said the parliament’s appointments committee will continue to meet to consider the ministerial nominees of President Nana Akufo-Addo who was re-elected in December.
Last Monday, the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) said seven doctors have died of COVID-19 in the country.
Five of the doctors reportedly died in 2020.
Frank Ankobea, its president, had said the association would recommend “extra restrictions” to Akufo-Addo if the rate of infection continues to rise.
The country has reported 73,003 cases and 482 deaths since the pandemic began.

*To be delivered next week
*Pledges to buy additional 5m vaccines through BUA/CACOVID/AFREXIM partnership
BUA, one of Africa’s largest conglomerates, has paid for a million doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines for Nigeria. They was made through the AFREXIM Vaccine programme in partnership with CACOVID.
This is coming at a time Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, is experiencing a spike in COVID-19 cases.
These doses, expected to be delivered next week, will be the first delivery of vaccines to Nigeria since the COVID-19 vaccines became available and will be distributed to Nigerians at no cost.
A statement released Monday said BUA Founder, Abdul Samad Rabiu, thanked the President of the Afrexim Bank, Dr. Benedict Oramah for making the purchase possible and the Nigerian Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, for coordinating the process through the CACOVID Private Sector partnership.
“BUA decided to secure these 1million vaccines by paying the full amount for the vaccines today because these vaccines became available only last week through AFREXIM. We expect the vaccines to be delivered within the next 14 days and hope priority will be given to our frontline workers who have committed their lives to managing the pandemic,” Rabiu said.
He added that, “In addition to this, BUA is committing to purchase 5 million doses for Nigeria as soon as they become available through this same arrangement.”
