in short I hate reptiles generally, any kind of reptile I mean any - lizard, skink, snake etc.

Looking at
1. the triangular head,
2. the short neck and muscular body as well as 3. estimating its length (roughly) from the photo,

this is a viper of the specie Bitis gabonica (the Gaboon viper).....and the girth around the middle suggests that it recently ate something and was probably trying to digest it when you ran in to it. It was too lethargic to mount a defence.

Count yourself lucky.....if you trampled on it when its belly wasn't bloated this post will not have been on Nairaland. Na your obituary wey we for dey read.

PS: Better clear your compound and sprinkle kerosene everywhere. You do not want to have another one within your vicinity.
