The academic and non-academic of staff at the University of Lagos are holding a meeting.

The PUNCH gathered that the emergency meeting was called over the removal of Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe as the Vice Chancellor of UNILAG.

Our correspondent gathered that the t meeting is holding after leadership of the unions had met separately.

As of 11.30am, the meeting was ongoing at the Council Chamber Foyer of the university.

During the meeting, the leaders of the unions took turns to address the workers.

The PUNCH also gathered that an emergency Senate meeting held on Thursday morning in the university.

“We will communicate the outcome of our meeting officially. I don’t want to be the one to divulge the outcome of the meeting,” a member of the Senate told our correspondent.

The lingering faceoff between Ogundipe and the Chairman, Governing Council of the institution, Dr Wale Babalakin, worsened on Wednesday as the council announced the removal of Ogundipe from office .

Ogundipe’s removal was contained in a statement by the Registrar of the institution, Oladejo Azeez.

The announcement came after a meeting it reportedly held in Abuja.

It was gathered that 12 of the council were present at the meeting and seven voted for Ogundipe’s removal, four voted against it and one voted that he be placed on suspension.

But Ogundipe had described his “purported removal” from office as untrue and illegal.

Ogundipe said this in a statement he issued on Wednesday in Lagos.

”The attention of the University of Lagos Management has been drawn to a notice to the general public on the removal of the Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos, dated Aug. 12 and signed by Oladejo Azeez, Esq, Registrar and Secretary to council.

”It states that the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, has been removed from office with immediate effect.

”The purported removal is an illegality and cannot stand as it is in clear violation of the University of Lagos Act as amended by the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Act, 2003.

”Therefore, of the University of Lagos community and the general public are advised to disregard the information as contained in the notice.

”Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe remains the Vice-Chancellor of University of Lagos,” he said.

Whenever a power struggle is involved, Nigerians forget about the so called Covid 19 guidelines and mobilize there, but if it's to get schools reopen, you'll hear all manner of excuses, including that Corona virus has taken over all seats in various lecture halls and hostel beds.

Like I said earlier in a related thread; the fact that the removal of prof. Ogundipe as the VC and the subsequent installation of another prof. took place in Abuja shows that that something is not right.

I believe that the removal of prof. Ogundipe is a witch-hunt maybe from the governing council or a higher political figure. whichever way, it is a disgrace to the of the council and the Senate of the institution.

I think the university union s the former VC; if they do, this will be another problem for unilag coz the Union will definitely embark on series of strike. And as usual, the students will be the victim.

shame on these politicians parading themselves as academics and shame of the NUC for aiding and abetting such delirious act.

So you agree that these fools practise godfatherism. Human beings are indeed foolish, democracy is a government for the few, by the few and of the few.

The Vice Chancellor PROFESSOR Ogundipe, was REMOVED by DOCTOR Wale Babalakin!

You see the IRONY of Nigeria? Where a Doctor (student) removes his Professor (Lecturer) from Office!

Wale Babalakin has not provided us with evidence of What Ogundipe did wrong, apart from just mud-slinging and l notice that Wale Babalakin is ALWAYS destroying PUBLIC GOOD, for his own SELFISH INTEREST, anywhere he goes.
From the Concession of FAAN local Airport, to the Federal Secretariat in Ikoyi, to the Concession of the Lagos Ibadan Express road, anything Wale Babalakin touches, DIES.

The purported removal obviously did not follow laid down, due procedures and is therefore null and void, ab initio.

Babalakin has his own Private University in Ondo State (l think) and Nigerians should not allow him to destroy one of (if not) the best University we have in Nigeria. He should be removed from the governing Council completely.

SMH for our leaders.
This is the only thing they care about. It's politics time; their lofty positions and selfish personal interests have been threatened, they are no longer afraid of dying.
Meetings have quickly been called; covid-19 is no longer deadly.
But when it comes to student interest, excuses will start climbing each other.
Government hasn't fulfilled promises.
Government hasn't put in covid-19 guidelines.
Covid-19 is deadly.
Selfish human beings.
No single care for their students.
I can't believe I used to all these wicked university bodies in their selfish quests.

It may have nothing to do with a "third party" buit just a SELFISH INTEREST of Wale Babalakin because he is such a greedy and selfish humanbeing without a conscience.
Anyone who reads about his track records will realise how greedy, souless and inhuman he is, when it comes to pursuing selfish, greedy interest at the expense of the community or public good.

I dont even know what Buhari or whoever got him that position, was thinking, to make him a Pro-VC of Unilag, when they know that he is a proprietor of a Private University...CONFICT OF INTEREST AT PLAY.

It is very telling to note that the Unilag Governing Council chaired by Wale Babalakin could not meet inside the Council Chambers inside Unilag, to remove the VC, but went to Abuja to do so!
This removal is illegal and it will not stand, due proces of removing a VC was not followed.

SHAME ON YOU, Wale Babalakin, you are a Vulture
