GT Bank Naira Master Card No Longer Works On International Trade Websites (20240 Views)

Hi Nairalander's, I observed something recently while trying to use my GT Bank Naira Master Card on Aliexpress. Three days ago, I tried to help my younger sister make payment (of $156.79 USD) for her order on Aliexpress. But to my amazement, the payment wasn't successful. I ed GT Bank customer service and was informed that their Naira Master Card has been restricted not to work on Trade websites like Aliexpress, Alibaba, Ebay, Amazon, etc. I also reached out to a friend who knows about the recent development and he told me that some people were taking advantage of the GT Bank's online exchange rate of N390 to $1USD to enrich themselves. Please anyone that has made payment on any International Trade Websites (within this week) using his or her Naira Master/Visa Card should kindly share his/her experience. Below is also an email I received from Fluterwave on their Barter Virtual Dollar Card Service Interruption on the 29th on July 2020. This is a sign that there is going to be some international transactions restriction on all Nigerian Bank Cards. Hey! |

I think most of the banks now have $500 monthly limit on their cards. I experienced same on my Zenithbank Card. |

I started experiencing this issue on Tuesday evening (28-July-2020) Well, I still successfully used my GTB Naira Mastercard to pay a USA outfit @ N390/$1, as recently as on Monday - this week. As of Today (being Friday 31-July-2020), Zenith Bank customer care informed me that the limit on their Naira Master/Visa Card per month is now $200 USD. But the customer care agent refused to tell me the exchange rate they're using as of today. She only said the exchange rate will be determined at the point of the transaction. This got me scared. I think most of the banks now have $500 monthly limit on their cards. I already have a GT Bank Dollar Card, but the difference between N390 (online rate with Naira Master Card) and N475 (bureau de change rate) is much. especially when you order for things as frequent as possible. Just get a dollar card and save your self the stress Kindly shed more light on this if you're serious about it. Several places to buy usd both online and bureau de change. 1 Like |

I'm happy people have finally made this thread because it seemed I was the only Nigerian doing online purchases for months. As far back as May (I think), First Bank charged me 412 to the dollar and I cried out on nairaland, not much response. Everything said here I've experienced. I'm waiting for midnight to try to pay for something I bought a week ago and that an "unpaid item" complaint has been launched against me. The sad part is these useless banks don't tell you anything and in my case I re-ed my cards, my paypal and all, not knowing where the error was coming from. First, I was told there was now a $500 cap (1st Bank) and this July, I revived my Zenith Bank dormant for many years and I was told their limit was $1,000. They were the ones who restricted my purchases first and after all the stress, I finally got one if them to tell me the limit was now $200. This country is a joke and unrecognized in the do comity of proper countries. Only South Africa is considered a country in Africa in the global financial and commerce family

routik: I observed it today and I felt something sinister somewhere was wrong with the payment processor. OK, I will talk with my officer with respect to this development. So strange, GTB of all banks |

Very Sad Experience. If this is the case, then what is the solution as regards to making online payments at a reasonable exchange rate? How reliable are some of these third parties that s on helping one buy things on Amazon, Aliexpress, etc and at what rate do they charge? Honestly, going to bureau de change to buy dollar at the rate of N475 per dollar is not even an option for me. Besides shopping, one has a lot of web & training services to pay for on some international websites. Which way Nigeria?! ![]() Dwightventures: |

Now, I've got more interesting discovery. Frustrated by this ongoing problem, I decided to waste a little money to buy the cheapest thing I could find on Aliexpress. I paid $2.80 on the item, used the cards that have refused to work on ebay/paypal and voila! So this is not bank matter but specific merchants (namely paypal). I'm deeply frustrated and confused with this development
