One thing with Xiaomi you get dedicated SD card slots on entry level, hybrid SIM slots on mid-range and upper mid-range and mostly no expansion on flagships

You have a lot of things to do, Unlock bootloader, flash a custom recovery, root, enable camera2api before you think of installing Gcam.

Redmi 7, RN7, Poco F1, Mi 9 family, Redmi K20 series have the upper hand of camera2api been enabled out of the box so no need for all the above process

when I put it in a card reader and insert into my system, it's as if I just inserted an empty card reader, no recognition whatsoever. My phone doesn't see it again too.

Oops! That's a serious case o. Try using diskpart utility. Try the process attached (if you haven't), if it doesn't work, I'm afraid it's GONE, but if it does, there's hope for data recovery (might not recover all though).

Since na MTK, there's little development for it. Once I switch to a SD Xiaomi device, I can unlock and flash whatever I wanna flash
