Still on Foundation works... Getting prepared for application/pouring of "READY MIX" concrete from Lafarge...
|
Re: Construction Of A Fire Station At Yaba by Nobody: 12:37am On Mar 15, 2017 |
architectB: This is nice. When you're opportuned, can you walk us through cost savings, if any, from using ready mix. Also the decision process to use this. Was this a project scope decision or for efficiency? |
FastShipping: 12:49am On Mar 15, 2017 |
EgunMogaji: Don't be shocked to know that it cost a lot cheaper to have Lafarge or other cement/concrete supply companies supply concrete to your site. Our people are still stuck in 17th century mind set. I asked a popular engineer here if he was aware that companies bring ready mixed concrete to the site, I was shocked he wasn't aware. The person actually said such service can only happen in America but he was shocked when I told him I first saw such thing happened in Abuja in 1997. 3 Likes |

FastShipping: I was beaten black and blue by oga spyder880, kolashangone and brabus for even suggesting my interest in this on my project. It's still one of my retirement business ideas for Ibadan. |

EgunMogaji: Guys this will also depend on volume or quantity of cement mix you will need.. for big foundation, decking or other masdive need, then that should be ok. How can you order that for small lintel or block settings you guys are doing. Hajji M. |
Re: Construction Of A Fire Station At Yaba by Nobody: 2:04am On Mar 15, 2017 |
mufutau55: My foundation is 80 X 50 feet, most definitely bigger than the foundation shown on this project though volume here may be more due to the foundation walls, etc. I've also called trucks in on 30 X 20 feet slab. Yeah some outfits have a minimum and I've never seen trucks ordered anywhere for lintel or block settings ![]() |
mufutau55(m): 2:10am On Mar 15, 2017 |
EgunMogaji: But your foundation is not a raft one that needed more cement pour is it? You just need some for blindng the floor only... that is what I am talking about volume. And I am sure if they give you the cost, you will be the first to complain becos it will not be comparable to manual mix. I am not saying its not good.. I ed when a buildet hereviuse that gor decking and said the decking was completed in 2hours instead of whole day as tge manual requires. Hajji M. |

mufutau55: Don't be so sure Sir. Ther are two elements on houses that I've built that I do not compromise on and that is flooring which includes foundation and roofing. I wanted my floor to be perfectly done and I was ready to pay for it. It would be silly and unrealistic of me to compare hand mix to ready mix delivery and I wouldn't. I would compare of course but it would be between ready mix outfits. With the amount of resources that went into my foundation, it rivals some, not all, raft in of materials. Anyways I salute our able builder for introducing modern techniques to home building. It's one thing to talk about it and show pictures and another to show work in progress. |

FastShipping: we tried lafarge ready mix on a project but the logistics wahala was just too much. the site was along a busy road, and there was no space for the truck to park - we were told the only time they would be able to work would be late at night. next issue was that due to the constrained nature o the site, we would need a concrete pump, which lafarge did not have. end of story - we had to go back to traditional methods. a lot of planning is required. you have to have a structure that will receive all the concrete in place. [most of the time, our concrete containment is based on stage construction] We are still exploring options, but unless you are engaging big construction companies with modular steel formwork, it will be hard. |

EgunMogaji: Good evening @EgunMogaji... Thanks for your comment. Concerning your question, i regret to say that the Ready mix does not save cost at all ooo; as a matter of fact, it is a lot more expensive than the manual method that most people are wont to use. As at today, the cost of Ready mix (from Lafarge) is about 40k per cubic metre for grade 25 concrete while you can get the same mix (albeit not as pure as you might want it to be) for between 20 - 25k if done manually. On large projects, Ready mix is advised but on this project (which is small), we were just trying to make a statement, being the first project we were getting from the institution. Apart from cost issues, Ready mix is waaaaay better than manual in every regard... I mean you can spend 2 hours to cast a slab that will otherwise take you at least 10 hours... 2 Likes |

FastShipping: You are very right @Fastshipping... i agree that there is need to update our knowledge base and try to catch up with the rest of the world... We are trying though but u will agree that there are a lot of challenges the naija professional has to contend with sha ooo... Thanks for your comment... Regards |
architectB(m): 10:47pm On Mar 15, 2017 |
mufutau55: Yes @Mufutau... u are correct... The larger the scale of the project, the greater the need for Ready mix... Meanwhile, the minimum quantity Lafarge supplies is 9 cubic metres (if i correctly)... Regards 1 Like |

oyb: I understand you perfectly @oyb... we had to write a letter requesting for a part of the road to be cordoned off for a few hours and we also were compelled to do it on a saturday. As for the pump, Lafarge do have a pump that you will have to pay for... |

architectB: Thank you for your response. The issue here is the fact that labor is too cheap in Nigeria. I am guilty of that too because sometimes when I pay asking price to artisans I just have to add more to it just so that I can sleep at night. Over here, when you are paying cement folks at $35 per hour then you only want to pay them for 2 hours instead of 8 hours ![]() 4 guys at $35/hour for two hours = $280.00, versus 8 guys at $35/hour for 8 hours = $2,240.00 I think you did good by "packaging" this, hopefully it will result in more projects your way. 4 Likes |
