There is this orientation given by our elders that, there are some town within yoruba that they don't marry each other, and when they coincidentally do, bad things will happen to them. They said, it is advisable for those areas to marry themselves than inter-marriage with other areas. This leads to the place like Ijebu in ogun state, where due to some things in the part, those who are not from Ijebu area are not advisable to marry from Ijebu. Whereas I envisage Ijebu citizens are not comfortable with this perception from other areas within yoruba with my recent encounter with some Ijebu citizen. What is your opinion about this diatribe/bitter criticism within yoruba's sons and daughters? Do you think we are in the right direction? Your perception about this may help in great ways in our yorubaland! |

The truth is when you ask many people the cause of the special hatred for the ijebus, you will be hearing reasons like *Ijebus are stingy *Ijebus use jazz and all sort of meaningless reasons. As for me, I stood my ground that I'll marry my Ijebu boyfriend. I did and am happy |

olaglamour:I must stand my ground then... How has been the experience so far with Ijebu man? |

To me there is no reason for not marrying ur hearthrob because of some superstitious belief. Some say ijebu are stingy, wicked e.t.c. Believe me this same people will tell u, u can't marry from some family in your own clan, who will you marry then? As long as you know the person in question and you understand each other plus love, you're good to go. I married an ijebu man ( sagamu) (the very place people are afraid of ) and I've never regretted my action and am from Niger delta. What will u say to that?

i really dont have any objections to people marrying within their own places, unless its not expedient to do so. For example, if outside input is needed for various reasons. however, i noticed some people take offense at any suggestion of them marrying or dating within their locality including tribe or ethnicity. everyone should do what suits them or what works best for them.. 1 Like |

hmmm, the same thing happens here in the igbo tribe, Don't know why are people being adviced not to marry from Mbaise. When i asked why, they gave the same reasons to that of Ijebu. They usually say this "if you see an Mbaise man and a snake on the road, kill the mbaise man before you kill the snake" putting it that they're worse than snakes. Hmmm. I've told my parents, tribes or myths about a certain place or people won't stop me from marrying someone i see as a husband. I don't give a damn! |

Joy83: Number 1 is jazz and ritual. Number 2 betrayal. 3 love of money . Those 3 things I mentioned. I experienced it wiv all the ijebu people I came across. Had the opportunity of staying at ijebu igbo. Can't even say what my eye saw especially wiv the indigenes. That's all I can say 4 Likes |

Joy83: from what i have been able do gather through extensive research, i think the other clans in yoruba are just envious of the ijebus first & foremost. they are the richest in yoruba, the most enlightened & they had first hand transaction with the white men back in the days. another angle to it is - they benefitted immensely during the slave trade era. they set their own toll-gate and they were ruthless in taxing any slaveowner taking slaves to lagos port. all slaveowners must through ijebu to get to lagos back in the days. the other accusations are stinginess, occultism, jujuism & the myth that their women are a poisoned chalice. their men have no issues at all(apart from love of money, stinginess, etc) according to my research but their women are a double-edged sword. an ijebu woman is ready to push a newspaper vendor to the senate through her vast connections but if he betrays her via infidelity, womanising or having a love-child outside the marriage, the punishment is death! believe it or not, this bit seems true. the ratio of ijebu landlords to ijebu landladies is about 1 to 20. so you are in safe hands marrying an ijebu chic provided all the agreed before the marriage are respected. if you default, you have bought yourself a first class ticket to lucifer. |
