I saw people building houses inside the confluence of River Niger and River Benue in Lokoja the last time I traveled to Abuja. I was surprised that government could over look such act.

The mokwa flooded area must have been a forgotten flood path that people build houses on over time.

It still boils down to government inadequacy, that location was not meant to be built on. The government/leaders are not proactive.

Funny thing is that after a couple of years some people will still buy the abandoned plots to build their houses and same flood disaster will happen again

Why did they build on the water way? Funny thing is that before the white man left after independence, they had clearly mapped out the water ways in Nigeria but over time, through stupidity and greed, Nigerians have built on land that was clearly reserved as a buffer during times of flooding. We never learn.

The flood washed away all those houses and structures along its path. Lesson: that route is a flood prone area to be left alone.

This is the real issue I tell you. Lots of those house are close and and are even along the flow of the river bank with no proper drainage. Government needs to come hard in some of these practices otherwise this mishap is likely to repeat itself due to lack of compliance and stricter enforcement of land use act

Youโ€™re correct! In my area, people are constructing houses near canals, with some even building directly over waterways, oblivious to the dangers involved. When I explained the risks to one of them, his response was, โ€œIs this your community?โ€

Some of Mokwa's victims must have been warned of the dangers of their actions, but as usual, they overlooked it.
