Hello, Nairalanders, I bought a Nigerian used car few days ago which has two previous owners, I recently paid for a new plate number, I was charged 145k. But I'm having some difficulties and unable to fathom how to go about It, I wish to know If I should include my change of ownership papers and agreement papers that was signed while purchasing the Car, into my lists of documents, I really do not want any police problem, and that's the reason I'm asking, to be sure, because on my previous car which I retained the old plate number, the police normally ask for my change of ownership papers and agreement papers.

Also, the motor receipt, should I include it too? It was bought by the first and it contains his name, I'm actually the third .

Also, the change of ownership papers I did carries the old plate number of the vehicle, and I don't know if the police would use it as a yardstick to carry my car to the station, I'm so confused, please help me out, please. I'm yet to drive my car on the road, because of these uncertainty. If I had known I won't have listened to my bro and won't have ed a new plate number, I should have continuing using the previous plate number, because I already know for sure that change of ownership and agreement papers are a must and veey necessary, as the police normally ask for them on my previous car that I continued using the old plate number that came with It.

What do I do, I really need to know, please I need responses, please.

I believe the car has a plate number already. They won't give you another plate number. Except you want a special/ customised plate number.... The only thing you can get is change of ownership and prove of ownership... Besides, why are you trying to change the plate number? From the little I know, you can't a car twice..... If it were to be in Abuja, VIO will call you to come pick it up, by the time you get there, police will be waiting for you to hear why you're trying to a car that has been ed before . A plate number is ed to a car, plate number does not change but ownership change except you need a special/ customised plate number

That is why there is a proof of ownership/Police extract, officially you cant a car twice. Is a criminal offence. If you have the importation clearance or first receipt, proof of ownership then you are good to go.

Who told you you can't a car twice??

You can decide to discard old plate number from the previous owner and a fresh plate number. All you need is proof of ownership, change of ownership and vehicle details

Boss, It's possible to a car twice, when my bro bought his car, the seller removed his plate number and he had to another plate number, an entirely different plate number, different from the former that was removed by the seller.

Maybe that car wasn't ed before. People drive cars that are not ed because they intend to sell the car soon. An uned car value is higher than a ed car. Or a fraudulent official ed the car for him again

Do change of ownership, you will have a new number plate with your name and details, at that point you don't have anything to do with the old number plate that carries the old owner name.

Your car documents should be proof of ownership, vehicle license, road worthiness, insurance, cmr. All bearing your name and details. Police doesn't have any business with your receipt. Give them the papers above (photocopy ooo), tell them before you were issued car papers you submitted your car receipt.

You don't need to attach receipt or agreement papers or proof of ownership paper, just make copies and keep inside your vehicle.

Ask people working in licensing office if it's possible or not. What they need is the receipt and change of ownership agreement from the previous owner and they delete the previous record of registration with the old plate and old name while re-ing the vehicle with the new plate and new name. But as I said earlier you don't have to take my words for it, ask someone working in licensing office that you know.

Op don’t mind the first two comments, they’re just ignorant and they should learn. You can a car twice, just submit the old vehicle license to them, they will call the former owner at the licensing office to be sure he sold the car to you, once that is confirmed they will allocate a new number plate to you along with change of ownership then you are good to go

Thank you so very much sir, I greatly appreciate. Sir, the change of ownership I did on the day I bought the car, the old plate number was written on It, how do I go about this, what do you advice for me to do, police would definitely use it as a yardstick to carry my car to the station and extort me heavily.

With the change of ownership and receipt/purchase agreement, go to the licensing office of your choice and do a proper change of ownership (your vehicle will be in your name and details with new number plate given to you which will have proof of ownership in your name and details, vehicle license and other documents in your name). You can @ ospreywin here on Nairaland, he will help you out. 100% legit

I have already applied for plate number, in which the person that did it for me, told me it'd be ready in 7 working day's.

Over here, the police normally ask for purchase purchase receipt, change of ownership, purchase agreement and the previous owner change of ownership. Now, the change of ownership paper I did on the day I purchased the car, which the police normally ask for all the time, carries the old plate number. That's why I'm scared, but I'm thinking of going to where I bought the car and requested for another change of ownership, with my new plate number written on it. Sir, Is this appropriate? Or should I use correcting fluid to correct It and then make a photo copy, and Include It on my papers, I'm really so confused.

Police disturbs you because you are still driving around with the former owner's number and details. I was forced to do change to ownership and have my own number as their wahala was much, after that nobody disturbs me about receipt or change of ownership anymore.

When you have your own number, they will only ask for car particular then you only present proof of ownership, car license, road worthiness, cmr and insurance.

I think you are confusing yourself.

I think the change of ownership you see referencing here is the one given to you by the car seller.

But the licensing office should give you another official one when you change number plates. This official one will carry the old number and the new number that now belongs to you.

Don't mind people telling you that you can't re a vehicle twice. That's not true.

Car number plate is usually tied to an individual. Not a car.so a seller can decide to remove their number plate and sell their car like that. So in that case, is the new owner supposed to be driving the car without number plates if the car cannot be ed again?

When I got my first car in 2019, I changed the number plate and the papers were now bearing my name.

Please you can a car and many as possible, some people don't like to sell a car with their plate number.. And some that got the car with old number would like to have the new number ed in their name.

So a car can be ed twice or more.

For clarity purposes, Any registration done in the FCT assigns the number plate to the vehicle not the , this means when you buy an already ed vehicle in Abuja you have to collect the plate number and all other other documents, bring it to the licensing office and do a re-registration where the documents will now be in your name, no number plate change and you have to maintain the number plate that come with the vehicle. Unlike Lagos and other states on the Autoreg platform which the registration(number plate) is assigned to a not the vehicle. When you buy a Lagos ed vehicle, the previous owner is mandated to retrieve his number plate from the new and the photocopies of the documents is handed over to him to go process a change of ownership and new number plate.
Summary:
Abuja registration (number plate) is assigned to the vehicle, not the , while Lagos and majority of the other states registration (number plate) is assigned to the not the vehicle.

First of all, Who charged you 145k for change of ownership That's literally X2 of the amount for it! Anyway that is gone...

Back to your question, that purchase receipt and change of ownership document and even the receipt you collected when buying the vehicle is not supposed to be in your vehicle when you're driving around, just get a change of ownership affidavit and police report done. If you put those documents in your car especially that receipt that's when they have the chance to bill you. Secondly, you need to process a new number plate if it's in Lagos, you can't keep using the old owners document and number plate to drive around it's improper. Lastly, you sound like someone that fears the police too much and that's a greenlight for them to extort you even if you have all the complete documents.
