As a theatre arts graduate, your plays played a vocal role in our courses of Theatre history ,Theory and criticism . You raised the revolutionary aesthetics in us.
Your plays made us voracious readers and prolific writers but Nigeria led us astray to be looking for money.. rest on prof Ngugi wo"thiongo, weep not child !!!!!

Yeah... Soyinka is among the last of the old guard of brilliant and gifted writers.

I fear this generation might never live up to their golden standard.

To make matters worse, the reading culture is fast fizzling out.
We still have Amanda Adichie
Helon Habila
and several other young writers but there'll never be ones like this author who just ed on and Chinua Achebe
Cyprian Ekwensi
Kalu Okpi
Buchanan Emecheta
Flora Nwapa
To name a few.
These were the days you impress a babe with your literary collection. If you have some MacMillan Pacesetters, Hardley Chase and Mills and Boon...
You've captured her heart already.

The Pen That Refused to Kneel

Ngũgĩ is gone? No, Ngũgĩ transformed.
He slipped into the soul of the storm.
The jailer broke locks, not his will;
His pen still walks the hills of Limuru.

He spat in the mouth of Empire’s lie,
Wrote in the tongue they told him to deny.
Each word a machete, each verse a flame,
He carved out truth and signed his name.

Now the earth wears mourning like a crown,
As a lion sleeps, but not bows down.
His voice now thunder in every tongue;
Ngũgĩ lives, though the body is gone.

Read an article about the great man a year ago. By then, he was elderly, and sorta struggling. While physcially in good shape, he had had some health issues in the recent past then. And sadly he had separated from his wife.

And now he is dead.

His books Weep not child, and The River Between had a lot of impact on me as a teenager. Taught me a lot about the Kenyan independence struggle without the dryness of a history book.

Yeah, you guys don't like Soyinka because 'he opposed GEJ' and 'ed tinubu' (I kind of was sad to hear about his backing the tinubu )....but he still writes great stuff.

Chinua Achebe was more prolific re novel writing, but Soyinka did a lot more plays and poetry (The Lion and the Jewel and the Jero plays are good examples).

But seriously, drop the politics. Tinubu and GEJ were laughing together after the 2023 election. You their partisans are still fighting each other.
