Hello , car talk section , I sincerely need your help .. I was driving last week Monday and my car just stopped abruptly , took the help of Nurtw workers to help push aside .after road side mechanic checked he said the engine knocked.. I found it laughable because it’s been just 4 weeks since I changed my oil and no sign whatsoever was on the dashboard .. maybe there was or it blinked but I sincerely didn’t notice when I started the car nor was there a knocking sound while driving , I was cruising mehn .. Ac on , Mohbad mix tape blasting …until the sharp stop … I towed it home and since then even tho I called my own mechanic and he says the engine knocked for real.. I haven’t allowed them dismantle to confirm because I’m really not boxed up for car repairs as of now .. The question I have is 1. What’s best to do? (Friend advised me to change crank shaft , oil pump and Bearing or so.. all under 400k 2. Mechanic advised I buy a new engine. 3.neighbour said I can buy half as he has experienced something similar and that’s what he did. So far I have enjoyed the car for 3 and half years undisturbed and if I will want to continue with it .. I will like it to be in the best shape as of when it knocked .. Please advise .. Thank you |

This happened to me once. A greedy mechanic also told me I’ll have to get a new engine whereas all my car needed was a new crankshaft sensor and ‘resetting’ by rewire after scanning and fixing errors. The mechanic was beyond embarrassed to see me driving the next few days.

scan first. Turn the crank shaft pulley by hand I guessed all your oil leaked out because they did not tighten the drain plug or filter 5 Likes |

Your best is to buy another engine. If you are lucky to see half engine just buy half otherwise buy half and top. You can still trade that oid one as scraps at half the price for another one, anything metal is expensive right now Your crank shaft is likely gone if not then piston and cylinder wall. Likely cause a failed oil pump or oil disappearance. 1 Like |

Germanhunter:Depends on your pocket sir If its jux the block and crankshaft that is affected It's best to buy a half engine than to start buying single parts and assembling... We have which ever car part u want... 2 Likes |

What type of car and engine are we discussing here. Some car engines can be rebuilt fine, and others..... Don't even dare. I think you need to be specific before the heavyweights here can have a say. 1 Like 1 Share |

Germanhunter: I'm suspecting your oil pump gave out or get cloaked. There might be the indication on the dashboard but you might not take it seriously serious. I believe we have nairalanders that can help with your need above, God bless Gazzuzz soul. 1 Like |

Germanhunter: I will advise you liaise with a mechanic close to your location so 1. You don't buy a bad engine designed as Tokunbo 2. You don't buy 1az instead of 2az because they look alike nah seasoned mechanic fit know the difference 3. Investigation to be carried out why the engine failed to avoid it in future. 2az is known to burn oil unprovoked especially high mileage ones which is what we buy as Tokunbo in naija. 4. Not to be penny wise pound foolish |

Germanhunter: You want to trade your engine , same thing another person did & it was refurbished & d as “tokunbo graded engine “ do you know if you’d be sold a bad engine someone had traded too ? Let’s phase out the mentality of selling bad vehicle parts . 1 Like |

nurey: I have a transmission leak on my honda civic 2007, the mechanic said they don't fix it, that I should be topping oil until I buy a new one. Can it be fixed? |
nurey(m): 6:51am On May 11 |
trojan84: Depends on quantity leaking out and what location. If it is caused by seal, you can buy a transmission stop leak, it will fix the leak temporarily if the leak is caused by aging worn seals. Permanent fix is to drop the transmission and change whatever seal is causing the issue, it is an expensive fix that needs to be carried out by a qualified technician in a clean environment |

Kasdat5: What if he's not financially bouyant enough to afford one without trading another? I was in those shoes some years back. 09 Accord. had to sell the faulty engine before I could put money together and acquire a new one. When you're advising, try and walk in the tiniest shoe possible until the advisee states otherwise. 1 Like |

Kasdat5: Auto makers take out dead engines from cars brought in for engine replacement, and proceed to work with the parts in these engines that can be salvaged or even fix and put into vehicles needing engines, this is what "remanufactured" means, can call it refurbished too. The only problem here in Nigeria, where honest conscientious people are a tiny fraction, isn't the owner of a dead engine willing to sell, the problem is the criminals in places like ladipo and owode, who as a result of a sad way of life, righteously believe selling unsuspecting or ignorant folks bad goods is actually "business", these folks do not do any work (or at best do a poor job) on these dead engines or other parts, they only clean up, put markings and make them look shipped from overseas. This is where warranty comes in, if the seller isn't open to you returning the part should the part fail within a certain timeframe, then do not go into "business" with such a criminal. |
