FG begins overhaul of NYSC scheme, plans teachers’, medical corps

The Federal Government has set up a committee to carry out major changes to the National Youth Service Corps.

The goal is to make the scheme stronger, more useful to national growth, and better suited to the needs of Nigerian youths.

This decision followed rising concerns about the safety of corps , poor facilities, and whether the NYSC still fits into today’s social and economic realities.

The inauguration of the committee happened in Abuja on Tuesday, with key people from government, civil society, and private businesses in attendance.

Speaking at the event, the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, said the NYSC has played an important role in building national unity and helping young people since 1973.

He said, “The issues of corps ’ safety, infrastructural challenges, and the broader question of the scheme’s relevance in an increasingly dynamic socio-economic environment are among the key concerns. However, these challenges also present opportunities that require urgent, visionary, and determined action.”

Olawande said the committee will look into how NYSC works and suggest ways to make it safer, more creative, and more impactful.

“The outcome of this review must align with broader national development objectives, positioning the NYSC as a strategic tool for youth empowerment and nation-building,” he added.

The committee will review current NYSC policies, talk to people across the country and suggest changes to laws, policies, and how the scheme is run.

It will also come up with better ways to fund, track and improve the NYSC.

The final report will be submitted to the minister within a set time.

Also at the event, the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, said the government planned to start a Teachers’ Corps and a Medical Corps.

These will be for NCE graduates and healthcare workers ready to serve in rural areas.

Alausa explained, “The Teachers’ Corps would help bridge educational gaps and create a pathway to government employment, while the Medical Corps would strengthen healthcare delivery in underserved areas, addressing critical issues such as maternal and child health.”

The Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, Hadiza Usman, stressed the need to improve technical and vocational skills training.

“Such alignment would empower young people to make meaningful, long-term contributions to their communities and to the nation as a whole,” Usman said

Patiently waiting......

If I am the president, NYSC would be my best tactics of battling unemployment in the country.
I would set up massive farms and big vocational centers in all geo political zones and make service to be 18 or 25 months.
First 6 months in your PPA with rigorous training in your area of specialization, then assessment to make you qualify for direct short employment and empowerment, those that failed will finish a year in their PPA with the current pay.
Those that qualified would step up and receive 250k upward for the remaining 19 or 12 months in their working centres.

#120k would be automatically saved as gratuity for each qualified corp and released immediately after service tenure.

Exemption would be made available after 6 months for those that wants to travel out or have other planned engagements.

Believe me the gratuity is something worth to start with in the journey of success if village people are not involved.

I hope they will be paid well. They are not your slaves to trifle with just because they are corpers.

If you must send them to undeserved areas, then be prepared to pay them well. Personally, I believe that people who agree to work in these areas should be paid much higher that their city counterparts for the sheer inconvenience and poor living conditions.

They have it, but they need to get value for the 75k being paid. And not just pay some ghost unproductive corp that add no value to their immediate environment

Long overdue. NYSC should be converted to a skills acquisition Program, and each prospective corp member should be allowed to serve in their state of origin or comfort zone. No they carry person pikin go Zamfara.

During my time, I was posted to Taraba State. A state that shares border wit Cameroon. It was a 2days and exhausting road trip. I was like wat the fvk is this? I almost turned back and say to NYSC FVK U!!

Could be a good idea.

If of the medical corps can be paid N250,000 per month; and teachers corps around N200,000, that could encourage more corpers.

But this will create new problems as existing teachers in particular will be very unhappy.

Whatever it is, it is good to finally see a Nigerian government that is willing to look at challenges in a new and different way.
