The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured a court order to remand social media activist, Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), pending the conclusion of an investigation into alleged cybercrime offences.

VDM was arrested last Friday at a bank branch in the Wuse area of Abuja by a combined team of EFCC operatives, officers of the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Police Force.

Eyewitnesses said he was accosted shortly after exiting the bank premises.
His arrest sparked widespread outrage on social media, with the hashtag #FreeVDM trending across platforms throughout the weekend.

Critics have accused authorities of using security agencies to silence dissenting voices.

Sources close to the investigation confirmed that the EFCC is preparing to file charges under Nigeria’s Cybercrimes Act, which empowers the commission to investigate and prosecute cybercrimes, particularly those involving financial and economic crimes.

“The remand order was granted to allow us to complete our investigation and finalize the charges,” a senior EFCC official said, adding that “he would be arraigned once we conclude that process, and the charges are expected to be substantial,” a source said.

As of Monday morning, VDM remains in the custody of the EFCC. His legal representative, Deji Adeyanju, issued a formal statement last week confirming that they are seeking access to him and reviewing possible legal actions.

The EFCC has not issued an official statement on the arrest or the charges.

I think his arrest is not unconnected with his recent spat with one Arewa youth president and his response to Sultan of Sokoto, then calling some northerners ‘uneducated’.

They wouldn’t come directly to confront him rather through some trumped-up charges.

Have you wondered why it has been hard for any meaningful protest to take place under tinubu ?

The platform and network for meaningful and nationwide protest is in his hands and they are in power . Meaningful and nationwide protest will have to wait for any election that does not go their way

He has said too much and the next thing is to silence him. His only offence was pointing out the corruption and stink oozing from the offices of those who call themselves EFCC.

You kidnapped someone and didn’t talk about it. Then, once he was tracked to your offices, you turned around to claim he was picked up by the SSS, when it was you who called the SSS to pick him up.

They also refused anyone access to him, including his attorney and those who brought food to him. Then, all of a sudden, they are looking to charge him to court. Instead of chasing shadows, maybe the EFCC should focus on cleaning up the garbage in their offices. They are easily the most corrupt agency in this country despite being an anti-corruption agency.

It has nothing to do with northerners. His issue is more connected with that of one Mercy Chinwo, a gospel artist. She had breached her contract and used EFCC to intimidate her record label boss since she was connected to many EFCC top dogs.

Her issue was more of the proverbial final nail in the coffin since VDM has had a series of run-ins with the EFCC, and always called them out for being corrupt. He repeatedly talked about having insiders in the EFCC, and said they had told him that the super-corrupt agency was tracking his phone and banks just to find an offence to pin on him.

We must repeal this cybercrime act 2024 and create a new one.
Nigeria's security agencies, particularly the police, are weaponizing it against citizens. The current law exists solely to silence Nigerians.

The reality is, under the Cybercrime Act 2024, there’s almost nothing you can do online without law enforcement twisting it into an offense. This is blatant suppression, and it has no place in a democracy.
Today na VDM, tomorrow fit be you.
