Have you ever wondered why the June 12, 1993 election is celebrated as the freest and fairest in our nation's history? It’s largely due to the innovative electioneering process employed, rather than solely because the winner was immensely popular. Nigeria has experimented with various electioneering processes in its democratic journey, yet electoral fraud, vote buying, and violence persist. Among these methods, Option A4 stands out as a credible and transparent system that ensures electoral integrity. Introduced during the 1993 general elections under the istration of General Ibrahim Babangida, this system promoted openness, ability, and fairness in the voting process. Given Nigeria's electoral challenges, re-adopting Option A4 is the only way forward for a sustainable democracy. Understanding Option A4 Option A4 is a unique open-ballot voting system where voters physically queue behind their preferred candidates or party representatives at polling stations. This method eliminates the secrecy of the ballot but enhances transparency by ensuring that every vote is counted openly. The process follows these steps: 1. Voters before the election. 2. On election day, voters queues behind the candidate of their choice, as indicated by candidate posters. 3. Electoral officers physically count and record the number of people in each queue. 4. The results are announced at the polling station and then forwarded to higher electoral authorities.. Advantages of Option A4 1. Transparency and Credibility: Because votes are tallied in the open, this method minimizes the risk of ballot stuffing, vote rigging, and manipulation of results. 2. Reduction in Electoral Violence: Unlike secret ballot systems that can be skewed in favor of certain candidates, Option A4 discourages tampering, thereby reducing post-election violence. 3. Elimination of Vote Buying: With voters openly declaring their choices, politicians find it much harder to purchase votes, rendering such efforts ineffective. 4. Faster Result Compilation: The public counting of votes at polling stations speeds up the result announcement process, eliminating delays that often lead to disputes. 5. Increased Voter Participation: The process is straightforward and easy to understand, encouraging higher voter turnout, especially among those with lower literacy levels. 6. Eliminates Huge Budget for Electioneering Process: Since votes are counted openly, expensive electronic voting devices like BVAS are unnecessary, reducing election costs and minimizing corruption within the electoral body. 7. Eliminating Post-Election Tribunal Battles: With results declared openly at polling units, the chances of electoral disputes and prolonged court battles over rigged elections are significantly reduced, discouraging a “go to court” mentality among politicians. 8. Promotes Inclusivity: When every vote truly counts, many well-meaning Nigerians are encouraged to enter politics, confident that their votes won’t be disregarded. 9. Promotes Effective Governance: When an elected leader knows that real power lies with the electorate, they are more likely to provide effective leadership; conversely, if they can attain office without genuine votes, they may act without ability. 10. Ensures the Progress of the Country: No country can move forward if its democratic process is constantly rigged, and a compromised democracy is worse than a military coup. Despite its benefits, Option A4 presents challenges such as intimidation, fear, and privacy concerns. However, the advantages carry significantly more weight, and I believe that with adequate security measures and vigilant monitoring, coercion can be minimized to ensure fair representation. Conclusion While no electoral system is perfect, Option A4 presents a strong case for a transparent, fair, and credible electioneering process especially in in Nigeria. Its ability to prevent electoral fraud, curb vote buying, reduce corruption, and eliminate prolonged post-election tribunal disputes makes it a suitable choice for the country’s evolving democracy. If complemented with robust security measures and voter education, Option A4 could revolutionize Nigeria's electoral system. To ensure a truly sustainable democracy, Nigeria must embrace Option A4 as the only viable path forward. According to a folk saying, "It is much easier to wake someone who is truly asleep than to awaken one who’s merely pretending to sleep." Our leaders know what needs to be done but have refused to act. However, if we unite under one voice and demand that this option be adopted, we will undoubtedly liberate Nigeria from those intent on stalling progress in this great country. I hope this makes sense.

semuni: Interesting. Would you mind explaining why you think an option that produced the freest and fairest election in Nigeria history is invalid? Intellectuals always give reasons to their point. |

AntiMarxist: In option A4 it is almost impossible to select a wrong queue and infact it is far less prone to errors as seen in thumbprinting where many votes were voided due to thumb printing errors. Come to think of it, Are we not tired in this country when it comes to voting for nothing? Dont you want a true government by the people? I honestly think this is the best way forward and without transparency in our electoral system, Nigeria will remain stagnant for ever. |
