Govt must be informed before rallies in Bayelsa – Diri.

The Governor of Bayelsa State, Duoye Diri, has said his istration is not against rallies in the state.

Diri said this ahead of a rally organised by a group to celebrate President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, in Bayelsa.

According to him, proper protocol for such rallies should be followed, which includes informing the state government just as wife of the President and First Lady had done before her visit to the state on Thursday on the invitation of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

Diri stated this on Wednesday at the 158th state executive council meeting in Government House, Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.

The governor explained that his istration would not stop any group from holding rallies in the state but emphasised that it would be unwise and counter-productive at a time lasting peace was being sought to address the political crisis in Rivers State.

He noted that Rivers and Bayelsa were sister states and that whatever happened in Rivers had a ripple effect in Bayelsa.

“We are not yet in a political season. l am not stopping anybody from exercising his fundamental human rights but as the chief security officer of the state and with information at my disposal, we must keep the peace of the state. Nobody should come and rock the peace and security of this state,” he added.

While receiving the interim report of the steering committee on resolution of the protracted crisis in Bassambiri community, in the Nembe Local Government Area of the state, Diri warned that any errant chief not ready for peace would be disrobed.

The chairman of the committee, Vice iral Victor Ombu (rtd), said the looked into the remote and immediate causes of the community’s prolonged crisis, conducted interviews and received memoranda as well as visited some sites to see damaged property.

He noted that the committee was in the process of achieving peace and had recorded genuine reconciliation efforts.

I do not think there is a U-turn here. Semantics shows that he was only retriating what he had said earlier that there will be no rally for security reasons.
I may not his line of thoughts but that was exactly what he retriated.

His Attorney General must have quietly advised him that he doesn't have the power to ban anyone from entering the State to partake in a quasi political rally.

Also, issuing orders to 'all security agencies' to prevent any rally taking place is in Yenagoa is futile. Afterall, those agencies are federal agencies. How can federal agencies prevent a Minister of the Republic from entering a state. The Governor doesn't even control the Police or Civil defence let alone DSS.

Those with cool heads in his istration must have told him not to embarrass himself.

There’s already a court order banning the rally and not just the Governor’s fiat order which can be challenged.

That court order is subsisting.

So, I can tell you this report is fake news. Governor Diri has not allowed that program to go on.

I see some people asking what is wike business in bayelsa and I shake my head in shame. You think government is the problem but many of us Nigerians are worse than the government. Any sane Nigeria that have the means should leave this country in peace because it can't get better.

So bayelsa is not in Nigeria? Can anyone detect to a citizen where he or she can do his activities? I don't any politician but since wike is a Nigerian, he has the right to hold peaceful rally in any part of the country once is not a treat to security of the state.

The governor cannot stop the rally. Trying to stop it in the first place was plain stupidity. He only ended up giving the rally more popularity and coverage. Governors should know where their powers end and when not to play politics with the fundamental rights of Nigerians.
