The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has called for adequate compensation for those who died in the mob attack on travellers at Uromi, Edo State.

The caucus also asked the President to order a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that those found culpable are brought to justice.

Edo Governor Monday Okpebhelo said about 14 persons have been arrested in connection with the mob action on the victims said to be hunters travelling from Port Harcourt to Kano.

In a statement by Kingsley Chinda (Minority Leader), Ali Isa JC (Minority Whip) and Aliyu Sani Madaki. (Dep Minority Leader), the caucus said the action on the travellers was in reprehensible, saying Justice must be done.

The statement reads: “It is with extreme shock and grief that we received the news of the barbaric murder of about 16 Nigerians, mainly northerners, by a gang of lawless anarchists in Edo State in the last couple of days.

“We find such brutal killings of innocent Nigerians in any part of the country by lawless mobs very reprehensible, and if allowed to fester without being put in check by responsible organs of government, such actions could threaten the peace and unity of the country.

“As such, we, the Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives, condemn this violent attack on the northern travellers, which culminated in their gruesome deaths.

“”We implore all Nigerians to never to resort to such jungle attacks on their fellow citizens but to always implore the services of lawful authorities whenever they notice any issue of concern.

“We are a nation under the rule of laws, and our law enforcement agencies are always available to partner with every Nigerian to assuage their concerns.

“In the face of this grave incident, which is already setting emotions on edge in parts of the country, we hereby call on the President, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu to direct the security agencies to investigate this matter and bring all those involved in the killings to book in order to prevent its recurrence. And also adequate compensation should be paid to the affected families.

“We also call on all Nigerians to remain calm, peaceful, and law abiding and allow the federal and state governments to get to the root of this matter in the interest of justice.

“We express our sincere sympathies and condolences to the families of the victims even as we assure them and all Nigerians that we, the Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives, will remain eternally vigilant until justice is done on this matter”.

I honestly do not hold anything against the north and the demands they're making and also the attention they are getting.

It is the southerners who have treated with levity the herdsmen issue.

I hope southerners are taking note?

Aswear, the north is more equal than the rest of the tribes in Nigeria. So all these heart wrenching images and videos of fulani carnage in the south did not attract reps to compensate the fulani herdsmen victims who not only lost their lives, but also lost their crops, but we will compensate people that left their village and carried weapon across states in the name of hunters? Choi!!

I have no issues with whatever compensation you want to give to the victims families.

Just know that what is good for the goose is good for the gander.

Ensure to extend same hand of fellowship to future victims of herders attacks.

I'm ashamed of our politicians from the southern part of Nigeria.

So u see how northern politicians are being serious about this?? Fulani wil come to a state and massacre people in the south and all of our governors and senators and politicians will just keep quiet. Even some foolish ones will try to hide it under the carpet...... Kaiiiiii

God forbid I reincarnate and become a Nigerian again

Ogun kpai unna for there!

In as much I’m not in of such babaric killing, but the fact still needs to be told. Since the criminals called herdsmen/hunters had been entering people’s farms, destroying their farm produce and even killing them, how many of the affected farmers get compensated?

What is good for the goose is equally good for the gander, and if issues like this is to be avoided in the near future, an unbiased approach needs to be implemented. Those so called animals that carried guns all in the name of herding must be proscribed or restricted to their North. If not, the Uromi case may be a childish issue compared to what may happen in the future.

Scenario 1. Fulani kill villagers- no compensation no swift action by the govt.
Scenario 2. Villagers kill fulani- full compensation and swift action by the govt.
This is Fulani Republic.

The killings happening in benue has been largely ignored as though the lives there is equated to that of humans have been chickens

It's very sad the southerns behave like their lives are less valuable than that of the north

How many compensation have been paid to the people cut down like flies in the south in their own ancestral homes

Bandits don dey barbarically murder innocent people for years… YEARS…

Nothing don happen. Nothing.

But because villagers wey don dey suffer for the hand of these same bandits mistakenly see "travellers with weapons"—with weapons o, not unarmed men o—now the whole of Northern Nigeria no go let others rest?

Very foolish hypocrites!

The Northerners wey dey push this agenda, plus the Nairalanders wey dey this nonsense… I spit for una face!

If una really care as una dey pretend, insecurity for Nigeria for don reduce by now.

Again, I spit for una face. Tuehh!

Absolutely. When Fulani herdsmen are kpaing people, keep the compensation going. Don't forget Deborah's family should also get.

The way some are acting, this is the first ever time innocent people have been kpaid, it happens a fair bit and the main perpetrators are Fulani herdsmen. Lest we forget.

Exactly.... I sincerely hate how southern politicians and various southern groups handle issues in the south. They are indeed toothless. God bless the soul of former Ondo state governor Akeredolu who at least took action when his people where being killed. See how northerners want to vomit blood because of their people killed. Not even a handful has been killed so far compared to the south. But shameless southerners act like foreigners as their people are being massacred day in day out like a normal event, with one mumu governor going as far as to beg them in the North, disgracing his entire state.

Killing anywhere is bad, but acting like headless chicken when your people are being killed is worse.

Has anyone noticed the killing in Anambra state has reduced? That is another exception of a working governor security wise.

First establish through proper investigation that the victims are genuinely hunters and not kidnappers, before talking of compensation.

Extra judicial killing is bad and should be condemned. But are the victims truly hunters? What are Hausa/Fulani hunters doing in Port Harcourt? Is there any evidence beyond their claims that they are hunters? Mind you, no professional hunters association has come out to lend credence to the claim that they are hunters. Furthermore, why moving such large cache of arms across borders in inter-state travel? Are those arms ed with the Police? Is the movement of arms known to the Police and authorized?

There should be no hurry to compensate and thereby compensate rhe families of kidnappers or criminals.

RIP to those killed in Uromi and I the compensation of their families. I condemn the killing but at the same time, I have the following questions to ask:

1. Where is the compensation by Sokoto state government for the family of Deborah who was stoned to death and burned despite being a Christian girl.

2. Where's the compensation for the people killed in Akure?

3. Where's the compensation for the villagers killed in Enugu?

4. Where is the compensation for the people of Benue and Southern Kaduna? All the victims of killing by Fulani herdsmen, where's their compensation?

Selective justice is injustice!
