The National Identity Management Commission has raised an alarm over the unauthorised printing of National Identification Number cards by individuals, cyber cafés, and organisations across the country.

The commission cautioned the public against patronising such services, emphasising that only the official NIMC General Multi-Purpose Card is legally recognised.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by the Head of Corporate Communications, Dr. Kayode Adegoke, NIMC described the illegal printing of NIN cards as a violation of the NIMC Act No. 23, 2007.

The commission warned that security agencies have been directed to clamp down on offenders.

“The Commission has not authorized any individual or organization to print any NIN card as a replacement for the official NIMC General Multi-Purpose Card. This act is illegal and punishable under the law,” the statement read.

NIMC further advised Nigerians to stop using unauthorised NIN cards for identification, stressing that only the official NIN slip is valid and must be verified upon presentation for accessing services.

“The so-called NIN card being printed by some cyber cafés and individuals is not authorised by NIMC. On no should it be presented as a means of identification,” the commission stated.

To curb this fraudulent activity, NIMC disclosed that security agencies have been notified and mandated to apprehend those involved in the illegal business.

“Anyone caught printing, selling, or issuing fake NIN cards will be made to face the full wrath of the law,” Adegoke warned.

As part of efforts to meet public demand for a physical means of identification, NIMC announced that it has finalised plans to launch an improved General Multi-Purpose Card (GMPC).

The card, according to the commission, will serve as both an identification document and a payment card, powered by AfriGO, a local payment platform.

NIMC urged Nigerians to report any illegal printing of NIN cards and seek clarifications through its official communication channels.

“For any inquiries, the public can reach NIMC via 07002255646, 0815505388, or email [email protected] and [email protected]. We are also available on all social media platforms,” the commission stated.

NIMC reaffirmed its commitment to upholding national identity integrity and ensuring that only legally recognized identification documents are used in Nigeria.

NIMC are not serious. How can you make getting NIMC card very difficult for citizens and you expect them not to seek alternative means of getting it for the purpose of documentation? Lots of Nigerians need government means of identification especially those that has not attained the age of of 18 during voter's card registration and not all Nigerians can afford getting International port which has prompted them to go for the so called fake NIMC card.
I ed for my NIN when Buhari's Federal government announced that to use a sim card, you must link your NIN to your line. I believe it's been more than 7 years that that announcement was made and since then I've tried to get the plastic card but couldn't get it because of how difficult it was to get it then. I gave up because I don't really need it because I've other means of identification especially for KYC but what about those that probably don't have driver's license, international port etc.
NIMC should make getting NIMC card less stressful and see how the number Nigerians patronizing these fake card vendors reduce without noise.
No be sey i dey people wey dey print de fake card ooo but de true tori be sey na una (NIMC) be de problem.

Printing on paper and printing on plastic. What's the difference.

Or we shouldn't print it at all after generating and paying online to get it.

Why not providing the hardcopy.

Incompetent agency. I did my nin about 10years ago and was not given the hard copy until I resolved to patronising one of the cafes. If they were competent I won't resolve to that. Useless and incompetent lots.

Very senseless publication. The said NIMC plastic cards are printed from their website with the owner's correct information and issued by their staff and other NIMC registration agents. So what makes the card invalid, the NIMC number on the card, the plastic used, the printer or because the charge for printing is not paid to NIMC ?

This country , everything must be a way to make money for every agency , this is what you supposed to have done instead of printing ordinary paper as ID , you are doing it with our money, public fund, tax payers money and yet not doing it well, for how long do you want us to be carrying paper around?
SERAP and some civil societal group should sue this man if we must make this nation a sane country

But NIMC, do you not feel ashamed of yourselves that for almost 2 decades you have been giving Nigerians slips of paper as means of identification rather than id cards? What does it take to produce a simple id card you shameless bunch? I think it is a good thing that cyber cafes are begining to blaze the trail for you to follow, marasa kunya!
