Elrufai is not popular but the APC has expended all its arsenal trying to combat him for weeks, and he seems to be having the upperhand. He has single-handedly revived the opposition. Elrufai is doing exactly what he's supposed to do, taking the momentum off Tinubu's campaign in the North. The real traditional opposition figures have not even entered the conversation yet and APC is in disarray.

The most important thing you should take from this comment below is that 2015 leaked memo. I read it again today and it's now so obvious El Rufai has not done anything new. I urge you to read it and come back.

In 2015, El Rufai was said to be a frequent visitor to the villa and was projecting himself as the de facto vice president. There was a rumour that Osinbajo had to assert himself and Buhari politely asked El Rufai to focus on his own state and leave Abuja istration to Abuja politicians.

Then a memo where El Rufai criticized Buhari's economic policies leaked. Does anyone think that document leaked without El Rufai leaking it himself?

I think El Rufai got spoilt when Obasanjo made him one of his closest ministers. He cannot function without being seen to be in charge.

Now that Tinubu decided it might be better to keep El Rufai at arm's length, El Rufai decided to take to the gutters to fight.

3. Tinubu, when he wanted to dislodge him as the fox of Lagos politics.

El Rufai is an intelligent man, but he lacks political shrewdness and lacks the ability to plan in secret. He could have been seen as a potential president if he matched his intelligence with the charisma of Yar'adua, the maturity of Nuhu Ribadu, the wisdom of Buhari, the bridge-building capacity of Tinubu, the humility of Jonathan, the craftiness of IBB, the silence of Abacha, and the diplomatic skills of Obasanjo. Obasanjo started demonstrating his brashness after his time in power.

Controversy can only take him so far.
