Good morning all
So I work as a resturant manager awaiting nysc
Pay + incentives in a month is 90
I share a room with 4 other guys
And work from 6:30 to 11pm everyday except Wednesdays

Lately I feel like I’m wasting my time here
I want to go and squat with an elder brother and learn painting from there for the next 3 months
At least that is a survival skill that can help me anywhere and anytime while I learn other things because I’m educated at the same time

My friend, I totally understand your concerns and desires!

Firstly, kudos to you for recognizing the value of acquiring a new skill, especially one that can be a source of income. Learning painting can be a fantastic way to express yourself creatively and potentially earn a living.

Now, let's weigh the pros and cons of your decision:

Pros
1. Acquiring a new skill: Learning painting can open up new opportunities and provide a sense of fulfillment.
2. Potential income stream: With painting skills, you can offer services, sell artwork, or even teach others.
3. Personal growth: Taking a break from your current routine can help you recharge and gain a fresh perspective.
4. Family : Living with your elder brother can provide emotional and guidance.

Cons
1. Financial uncertainty: You'll be giving up your steady income (N90,000/month) for an uncertain period.
2. Career impact: Taking a 3-month break might affect your career progression or relationships with your current employer.
3. Unpredictable outcomes: There's no guarantee that you'll become proficient in painting or that it will lead to a sustainable income.
4. Adjusting to a new environment: Living with your brother and adapting to a new routine can be challenging.

To make an informed decision, consider the following:

1. Can you afford the financial risk? Do you have enough savings to yourself during the 3-month period?
2. How will this impact your long-term goals? Will taking a break from your current career hinder your progress or create new opportunities?
3. What's your plan for after the 3 months? Do you have a clear idea of how you'll integrate your new painting skills into your life and career?

Ultimately, the decision is yours. Take your time, weigh the pros and cons carefully, and consider discussing your plans with trusted friends, family, or a mentor.

What do you think? Is there anything specific that's driving your desire to make this change?

OP, I like you. You come across like a focused young man. You have a drive that some of us couldn't boast when at a similar stage.

If I were in your situation as a younger man, I'd go ahead and acquire a "self-employment" skill. Painting is one of those.

After all, the current job is not one you will be doing going forward since you at least have to go for NYSC service. Who knows? You might even get opportunities to earn with the skill during your service year.
