The Operation Hadin Kai, the t Task Force of the military in the North East, has issued a directive banning the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, across the region.

This was announced by the Air Commodore U.U. Idris, the Air Component Commander, in a statement.

He emphasised that unauthorized drone usage poses significant security threats in Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states.

The statement reads, “The proliferation of drones for domestic and commercial purposes has led to serious security concerns.

“These concerns mainly stem from their possible use by non-state actors and criminal elements for subversive and offensive activities.”

“More disturbing is that government agencies and private individuals operate these drones without due regard to the extant regulations on their operations.

Idris decried the unauthorized operations of drones by government agencies and private individuals, stressing that such activities often disregard existing regulations.

He added that non-state actors have exploited drones to target military installations and critical national infrastructure, a trend observed globally.

He continued, ”Also, the non-state actors have perfected the use of drones against military targets and Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) as witnessed in other climes.

“Recently, there have been reports of drone sightings and unauthorized drone operations in the Theatre. On 7January 2025 for instance, a enger onboard an NGO flight from Maiduguri to Monguno was intercepted with a drone during a search at the helipad.

“The drone was confiscated, and an investigation is ongoing. These incidents among others revealed trends by individuals to operate drones without due course to safety and security with detrimental consequences.

“These incidents revealed trends by individuals to operate drones without due regard to safety and security, leading to detrimental consequences.”

“The Air Component OPERATION HADIN KAI (AC OPHK) is saddled with the responsibility of monitoring and regulating aerial platform operations including aircraft and drones in the North East Theatre.

“This is aimed at deconfiicting the airspace to ensure safety and security for all operators in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa airspace.

“Considering this, it is pertinent to reiterate the ban on drone operations in the North East Theatre as directed by the Appropriate Superior Authority.

”It is noteworthy to state that breaches of this restriction no matter how insignificant would be viewed very seriously.

“In view of the aforementioned, you are please requested to strictly comply with the regulation on the ban on drone operation in the North East Theatre comprising Borno, Yobe and Adamawa airspace in the interest of safety and security.”

Idris warned that violations of the ban, no matter how minor, would be treated with utmost seriousness. He urged all stakeholders to comply with the regulation to ensure safety and security in the region,” Idris stated.

The military should rather do their job than banning everything just because terrorist are also using them.

Military should step up their intelligence gathering. Will they ban the use of gas cylinders and solar because terrorists are also using them?

Some people are using that drone for agricultural and scientific work amongst other important things that can improve the economy of this country.

That's all we know how to do in this country, ban ban ban!! Without considering it's ripple effect. ....get all drones ed and owners need permission to use them , determine which area and purpose..... simple.

They would soon ban it all over the country.

When they possess or acquire the ability to override the operator signals that controls the drone, I'll take them serious otherwise this is just empty noise. There is nothing they can do to stop anyone flying drones. It is not like they track who is flying them and most times you can't even tell if a drone is above you.

This is just needless empty noise.

In this Google Earth world, you're banning drone? Isn't that a joke? Drones are banned in military zones and google earth doesn't cover such zones as well. Civilians and commercial drones don't pose any threat to any military that knows what they're doing. But military like Nigeria's that's analogue will see everything as threat

Naija and backward ways. Imagine banning drones. So because it was rumored boko haram used it during the last attack, instead of the army sitting up, re enforcing, working on being alert, discipline etc to avoid their base been over run, their solution is to throw the the baby with the bath water by placing a blanket ban on drone use in the north East.
Is it not that region that needs drones more? Farmers, Ngos, journalists, cartographers, security agencies, film makers etc all need drones.
Why not ban vehicles, camera phones, cloths etc due to security issues, Abi don't the insurgents use them too?

As a drone enthusiast who occasionally launches my fleet of toys into Nigerian skies, EXCLUDING the north of the country, I wholeheartedly an absolute BAN on drone operations in the north of Nigeria where terrorists have already tried to copy the Ukrainian adaptation of cheap hobby-grade DJI drones to drop rifle grenades on federal troops tasked with uprooting the virgin-hunting coons in turbans.

Despite my love for the peaceful exploration of the African landscape from the eagle's-eye vantage point of a drone, I recognize that civilian hobbyist drone operations may need to be suspended in war zones so that all detected drones that do NOT belong to the Nigerian military or law enforcement agencies can be neutralized with extreme prejudice the instant they are sighted by sentries on the ground and by air assets patrolling contested skies.

Even my beloved uncle Double Chief Alhaji Ambassador Ovladimeji Oluwaputini fully s this wise decision by the Nigerian military.
