Northern Nigeria Has Been Left Behind, Emir Sanusi II Laments

The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has lamented the Northern Nigeria’s failure to capitalise on its vast population for development, urging stakeholders to prioritise investments in education and agriculture to uplift the region.

Speaking as the guest speaker at the 50th anniversary of the visit of the founder of Faidha Tijjaniyya in West Africa, Sheikh Ibrahim Nyass, in Jos, Plateau State, the monarch noted that a significant population from the region practise subsistence farming and lacked access to modern agricultural technologies. He stressed the urgent need for the North to modernise its agricultural practices and improve educational standards, adding that the “North must wake up.”

In a lecture titled ‘The Imperative of Harmonious Coexistence in a Multi-Ethnic and Multi-Religious Setting’, the Emir drew on historical examples of peacebuilding, recalling the visit of the renowned Senegalese Islamic scholar Sheikh Ibrahim Nyass to Nigeria 50 years ago to promote peaceful coexistence between Muslims and non-Muslims in the then Benue-Plateau State.

Emir Sanusi II noted that his grandfather, late Emir Muhammadu Sanusi I, received Sheikh Nyass with the approval of the then Benue-Plateau Governor, J. D. Gomwalk, a gesture that emphasised tolerance.

The Kano Emir, therefore, called on Muslims in Plateau State to complement the governor’s efforts in promoting sustainable peace and development.

Sanusi II understands the causative factors of underdevelopment in the north.

1. Religious intolerance: The Muslims and Christians in the north don't really cohabit well enough. The Christians are always scared because of constant persecution; hence, they built walls around themselves and went back into their shells.

A good example was the killing and burning of late Deborah for typing "Holyghost fire" in her school's WhatsApp group. They misinterpreted it, asked her to apologize and when she refused, they pounced on her, hit her with iron rods, sticks, and all, and eventually burnt her to death.

Till this day, no justice has been served. This and many other reasons why the Christians stay on their lanes.

Solution: There's urgent need to resentize all Muslim youth and even elders in the North that Christians are never their enemies. Constant attacks and aggression against Christians and people of other faiths will drive away investors. They should sound the alarm all through the mosques, villages and streets.

2. Education: Too many muslim brilliant minds are wasting away in the north because many believe that secular education is a Christian invention, and therefore, they don't have any need for it. This ideology was part of the reason Boko Haram was born. Boko Haram means the secular education is harama.

Goodluck Jonathan wanted to change the narrative so that the north can be repositioned, but they killed the project because of the hate against anything secular and Christianity. Though Christians in the north don't share the ideology. But because of marginalization, they haven't had the opportunities to lead in most cases.

Solution: There is a need for sensitization across all mosques and villages so that the archaic idealogy can change for the better. They should also ensure to erase terrorism. The terrorism started from having the wrong ideology that they need to jihad and by the context of their jihad, it means attacking and eliminating non muslims. Such ideology need to stop.

3. Impossible laws: The sharia law is not working. Nigeria is a secular state; people should not have sharia law in a secular state. There are no states in northern Nigeria where significant numbers of Christians are not found. It is now confusing why anyone would implement sharia laws in a state where there are diverse religious groups.

Hisbah should relax its laws on confiscating alcoholic beverages and allow for liberal ways of life. I agree that having moral police is very necessary, especially in this age where more than half of teenagers are rushing into frauds and other negative vices.

Solution: They should rely more on the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria instead of the sharia law. Also, these kinds of out-of-place behaviours of confiscating foods and items that the Nigerian constitution allows send negative signals to the rest of the world. Nobody will be happy to invest in such places.

The hate needs to stop. The aggression against other non-Muslims needs to stop.

That is when the north will start to develop. They are not more Muslims than Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and others.

Bonduhari the most useless man to ever be helped to become president of a country in modern history..
He was in the rock like a dead man for 8years.
No impact
No move
No foreign investments
No foreign collaborations
No vision
No direction
No connectivity of any kind with the people he assumely led
No sympathy
No empathy
No policy
No legacy
No foresight
Lacked basic integrity
Lacked mental capacity required of a normal human being
He was so mutely dumb that the country became so rottenly ruined under his nose.
He uselessed this country that the impact is terribly felt today and the only option for everyone is to relocate even to remote parts of Africa for those whho couldn't makke it overseas.

When will North take responsibility for their own problems and stop blaming Nigeria as a whole.... Even as educated nd sound sanusi is... That northern mentality still has a tight grip on him

His is talking about peaceful coexistence.... Back then when we see northern herders around our New site we offer them water and even food it's that same northern herders that are provoking other ethnic groups... The same Northerners Will attack other religious believers and ethnic groups living over there yet none of their elite will publicly condemn their actions.... What right does hisbah has to destroy alcoholic drink purchased by business people? Is alcohol illegal in Nigeria? Yet they will collect VAT from same alcohol sales in other regions why can't they address this.... Bt no... It always Nigeria fault

Development without vision of where you want to be isn’t good sir
That is the problem of the north
The north doesn’t have to be like America or uk but like northern nigeria
Come together and birth a vision
Grow at your own pace and style
There is so much potential is northern Nigeria
So many
You just have to come together to grow and all hands on deck for the cause
Imagine a developed northern nigeria not like uk or America but a developed northern Nigeria the way you like

Stupid people, they relied on population and Islamic connections and the military to stay in power while others were developing manpower. The greed of power and stealing from national vault is now a problem to them.

Someone argued with me once that if Nigeria part ways, the south will die of hunger.

If Nigeria ceased to be today, the north would be a theatre of war for many years. They will suffer. They are still hell bent on Sharia, that will make them like Afghanistan and Iran. They will never know peace.

Politics will not let them agree that the way forward for them is the new Tax reform bill...that is the magic wand that will make the govenors sit up but like I said, the elites will not want to disrupt their relationships with the governors by ing it.

Religion/Islam is the major factor holding the North back; that’s the truth! You can’t promote primitive, medieval ideas and expect progress—it’s simply not possible. You prefer to spend billions of Naira on religious activities instead of using the same funds to educate your large population of youths, the majority of whom are illiterate. If you truly want to progress, you need to reduce your religious extremism and outdated practices. You can’t have it both ways! The UAE is an Islamic country, yet they embrace modern education, and the results are evident for all to see. The North needs to wake up; you can’t continue to hold back Nigeria’s progress.

I am concerned about the consistent narrative that Northern states are being left behind. While addressing regional disparities is important, we must also ask: what about the challenges faced by the Southern states? Shouldn't all regions receive equitable attention to ensure balanced development?

It’s essential to acknowledge that the Northern states have historically received certain incentives, such as lower JAMB cut-off scores and other measures. However, it is worth reflecting on whether these approaches have achieved their intended goals and if they remain fair in the current context.

Equity must be our watchword, ensuring that every region is empowered based on need and potential. Let us have an honest, inclusive discussion about how to address these issues comprehensively and sustainably
