I also had 1 year program adn bought one way ticket. I dont think they even look at flight ticket because someone can still go to canada and change to a 2 year program

gretop86:
Hello house,

Please is it compulsory to buy a round trip/ 2-way travel ticket when traveling to Canada for a 1 year PGD program? I am resuming in January, 2025 and bought an Egypt air one way ticket thinking that I can buy a return ticket later but the online travel ticket platform I got the ticket from has been calling me saying that with a study visa, it is compulsory I buy a round trip/2 way ticket with Egypt air else I might have issues when traveling. Please is this true or do they just want to sell travel tickets.

I was told by a friend that I can buy a one way ticket on Egypt air if I have paid for my first semester in full and all I need to do is to have a print out of it with me. I don’t know how true this is.

Please kindly advise me on this to avoid issues when traveling. I look forward to your all responses. Thanks a lot.

Hello,

1. Generally, a Spouse Open Work Permit (SOWP) is tied to the primary applicant's study permit and active enrollment in a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). If the primary applicant (the student) defers their program after arriving in Canada, this could have implications for both the study permit and the SOWP

2. The timeframe is not determined

3. No, generally if you are from an English-speaking country you don't need to show your proficiency in English by taking the test.
olajide2428:
Good day All,

Please I have few questions Biko 🙏

1. If the spouse of masters students gets SOWP and the student differs after arriving Canada, will the SOWP be revoked?

2. On the average, how long does it take to get SOWP approved?

3. Also, will an American citizen trying to do a Masters in Canada have to write English test?

People like you discourage knowledgeable people from helping out with your baseless argument. This person needs correct information to make an informed decision and plan his future. Yet, here you are arguing over some time you have never done, don’t know how it works, and probably, don’t even know what applying from inside Canada entails. The page you posted clearly mentioned the eligibility for an inside Canada study permit application, yet you ignored it.
affoncad:

You're overcomplicating a simple process. Additionally, no course completion is required to apply for a student visa within Canada while on a visir visa . I know over 2 individuals who entered Canada on a visitor visa and successfully applied for a student visa internally.

However, I must note that:

- The process isn't stress-free.
- You'll still provide the same requirements as applicants outside Canada that LOA, PAL, PROOF OF FUND
- Medical fees are more expensive inside Canada.
- Approval isn't guaranteed (100%).
- If approved, you'll need to go to the border for flagpoling to get your study permit.
- You'll face another interview at the border before receiving your study permit.

People should be careful with the information and advice they get from people. A family with a stidy permit that is expiring in 2026 is on their way back to Nigeria now just because somebody gave them a wrong advise on immigration. As I am writing, they are at the CBSA deportation center. For privacy issue, I wont go into details.

As per study permit from inside Canada, the only person with visitor visa who can apply from inside Canada is somebody who came to study a pre-entry course that is six month or less. If your course is less than eight months, IRCC wont give you study permit. They will issue you visit visa to study. Omce you complete that course that is a prerequisite to what you want to study, you can apply for study permit from inside Canada. That one is settled.

The other time, somebody advised the spouse of somebody who defer ission to go and work. If you follow this advice, you are on your own o. That was the trap the family I mentioned earlier fell into. Now they are on their way to Nigeria. Look, there are some illegal things some students used to do in Canada in which they overlook in the past. But in Canada of today, DO NOT TRY IT.
The Immigration Minister has said that in many occassions that not all the students presently studying in Canada will be allowed to stay. PLEASE DO NOT GIVE THEM THE ROPE THEY WILL USE TO HANG YOU.

(1)The question was can the SOWP be revoked if student differs enrollment, you didn't answered the question.

Students has 150 day rules to begin studies after deffer of enrollment and must be approved by DLI.
If approved by DLI it is safer for both SOWP and study permit holder.

There can be genuine reasons for differ, it is the abs that spoil things for the genuine ones, the obvious reasons of changes in immigration rules.

The student must have deffered ission and broken 150 day rules or without approval of DLI or ignorant of immigration rules
Kurukuru: 7:34pm On Nov 18, 2024
Yes,the rules are meant for those with genuine reasons BUT UNFORTUNATELY, SOME UNSCRUPULOUS ELEMENTS ABUSED IT. If you see the level at which many international students abused the system, you will weep. Now they hardly believe those with genuine reasons.

Stop fear-mongering! As a Canadian citizen, I have firsthand experience with the process. I personally drove my cousin to the border to obtain his student permit after it was approved. he initially arrived in Canada on a visitor visa and successfully applied for a student visa. His application was approved, and everything went smoothly but expensive . So, let's focus on facts and avoid spreading unnecessary fear and misinformation !!

Ogbeni, dont brag here. I am also a Canadian citizen. Covid 19 made Canada to suspend some rules allowing certain nationals to apply for an in-Canada study permit or work permit. Now, Canada is back to pre-pandemic rules. Nobody is creating any fear here. The person that misled those on deportation now is also a Canadian citizen like you.

READ THIS, COPIED FROM THE IRCC WEBSITE:

Only some people can apply for a study permit from inside Canada. Do any of the situations below describe you, or the person you’re applying for? (required)
You’re currently in Canada and one of these applies:

you’re a Ukrainian national or family member of a Ukrainian national
you have a valid study or work permit
your spouse, common-law partner or parent has a valid study or work permit
you’re a minor child in primary or secondary school
you’re an exchange student or visiting student
you completed a short-term course or study program required to be accepted at a DLI
you or your spouse, common-law partner or dependent child has a temporary resident permit (TRP) valid for 6 months or more
you’re being sponsored to immigrate and you already applied for permanent residence (if you’re eligible)
you or your spouse, common-law partner or dependent child are subject to an unenforceable removal order
you’re the spouse, common-law partner or dependent child of:
an athlete on a team based in Canada
a member of the media
a member of the clergy
military personnel on duty in Canada or
an accredited foreign representative
you’re a refugee claimant in Canada or a family member of a refugee claimant in Canada

Stop arguing blindly! My cousin got a student permit in July 2024 as a visitor visa holder and applied from within Canada. I think you should re-read the instructions and simply click "NO" to all the conditions you listed above. Another person also got approved last month. I am a civil servant in Canada working with the CBSA. I wont divulge my identity here. The recent changes to the international student program are as a result of the abuse of the system. People like you are the ones teaching the foreign nationals on how to abuse the integrity of the immigration system. On Sept 1, 2024, Canada reverted to all the PRE-PANDEMIC policies pertaining In-Canada study permit. Those who applied before September 1, 2024 were exempted. So, if your cousin got in July 1, 2024, he might probably have applied before June 1, which fell within the frame when the pandemic measures were still in force, that does not mean that you should encourage people to do so now that the policies have changed. Canada immigration is guided by law. Section 215(1)(a-g) of the IRPR clearly explain the category of those who can apply from within Canada. By the power conferred on the Minister in Section 25(2) of the IRPA, the Ministet csn make temporary policies to vary or suspend any part of the IRPR. This what people like your cousin benefitted from. But now, the temporary policy has ended.

Well, if you are coming to Canada to follow all these ill-advice to explore the transition from visitor to study permit in which you are not eligible, good luck to you. You will meet us there.

Let me chip in this about the Nigerians on Youtube, every system no matter how sophisticated it is has some kind of loopholes. Those loopholes are deliberately left there to make the system not too rigid. But anytime Nigerians explore the loophole and they succeed, you will see them all over the internet tik tok, youtube , instagram etc. If you see the King sleeping and snoring on the royal chair, the wise thing to do is to and pretend that you no see anything. The wise ones here will decode my proverb.

For those citizens or permanent residents who encourage applicants to abuse the integrity of the immigration system, continue. You will meet your waterloo in the future.

Goodluck to you all.

Firstly, you are not acting intelligently but instead coming across as proud and unwilling to it when you are wrong. I can categorically state that a CBSA officer would not approve of your approach, especially as sharing information about your work online in this manner is highly unprofessional. Furthermore, impersonating a CBSA officer online is childish and inappropriate. Your primary motive seems to be proving your point rather than genuinely seeking to understand the situation.

The fact remains that visitor visa holders can apply for a study permit from within Canada, and this is officially accepted policy. Your claims and arguments do not change this reality. I personally know two individuals who transitioned from visitor visas to study permits just last month, with no mention of a COVID-related exception.

Please set aside your ego, focus on providing accurate and up-to-date information, and avoid making baseless assertions. Otherwise, you risk undermining your credibility and making a mockery of yourself.

You arrived in Canada last year on an SOWP (Spouse Open Work Permit) with your two kids after allegedly working for FAAN for 15 years. Now you are claiming to be a Canadian citizen .

Please kindly advise me on this to avoid issues when traveling. I look forward to your all responses. Thanks a lot.

Let me advice you, cancel your ticket with Egypt-air. They will never allow you board their plane, if you have only one way ticket especially since this is your first time to Canada, I am speaking with experience. Normally since you have up to 12 months you can buy one way ticket, but Egypt-air will not tell you that they don't allow that until you are boarding, the flight attendants won't allow you board simply because you don't have a return ticket.

The experience I had with them was in January when my younger brother was traveling to Qatar with a 2 years residency visa, he bought only one way ticket from Egypt air. There was no communication from Egypt-air whatsoever that they don't board engers with one way ticket on their flight until my brother was about to board and he was denied boarding in fact he missed that flight and there has not been any refund or communication even after all the mails I wrote to them. My brother have to buy another one way ticket for Qatar Airways before he could make that journey.

My advice is boycott that Egypt-air, they will disappoint you, sell your ticket now and book from another airline, your agent calling you is very correct, boycott them.

This information is not aimed at instilling fear, as you stated, but to educate people to make an informed decision. False information can cause irreparable damage to someone’s ambition. If you had truthfully reviewed the snapshot you posted, you would have seen that you answered “No” to all the criteria for an in-Canada application, and that was why the system asked you to apply as if you were outside Canada. A “Yes” will generate an in-Canada study permit application.

You do not quite understand the meaning of in-Canada and outside-Canada applications. In Canada, applications simply mean that an application was processed at a visa office in Canada, and a study permit is mailed to your address, just like a study permit extension. On the other hand, outside Canada applications are processed at a visa office outside Canada. In such cases, a visa is issued to the applicant to travel/flagpole, and a study permit is given upon arrival at the border/point of entry. The fact that your cousin was issued a visa and went to the border to receive the study permit confirms it was an outside Canada application (he applied with IMM 1294 if he used a gckey ). For example, while on a visit to Canada, I can apply for a study permit, just like someone residing outside Canada, and upon receiving a PPR, I must mail my port to obtain a visa which I will use to come to Canada to receive my study permit – this is the process for study permit made outside of Canada. That someone submitted a study permit application while visiting Canada does not mean the application was processed in Canada.
For an in-Canada study permit, you must meet specific criteria; one such requirement is completing a course or program prerequisite to securing a school ission to a DLI ( all the criteria were mentioned in the snapshot you posted, but you deliberately ignored them).

Also check this lady on youtube , she arrive canada on visit visa and now a student!!
@EvelynOnwuka

Because you're an immigration agent, lawyer, or consultant, that doesn't give you the privilege to complicate simple processes just to milk your gullible clients. I know people like you!

Respect to Indian and Jewish lawyers/immigration consultants in Canada smiley

Your comment is reasonable. I am not here to make an unnecessary braging since I wont earn a trophy here. You can't even recognise me if I meet you at the Montreal Airport. I am only here so that people can make the right and informed decision. Those they mentioned had applied before September 1. Even if you applied on August 30, you still benefit from the temporary policy.

Having a visit visa and return to Nigeria after your authorized stay as a visitor is a POSITIVE factor. Once you apply for your study permit from outside after your returned visit, Chinnok will flag you to the officer as a 'trusted applicant". You see the recent approval. The couple came to Canada on visit and they respected the condition of their stay based on Section 179(1)(b) of the IRPR. They are trusted applicants.

Then why turning a positive factor to a neutral factor with this advice they are giving to you?

I started this in-Canada argument with @Afoncad last month or so but when I saw his insistence I backed off when it was turning to hot exchange as a gentleman wey i be.

I am surpsrise his basis from this thread is he has witnessed two people do apply successfully from inside Canada but what he may not be privy of is if they have spouse/ direct relatives that are students, workers or they completed a prerequisite course of the course they applied for.

His cousin would have filled a relative in Canada that qualified him for a student visa with his visit visa, how did he skipped that important criteria?

In-country application for student visa that I know has its own eligibility and Bullstriker has just emphasized what I told Affoncad earlier.

Peace and Love.

Hi all, any body with an idea how long before a port is stamped and returned? It got to Abuja VAC on the 8th of November and since then no further update.

Hello, let’s not misrepresent or make it seem like it is wrong or illegal to apply for a study permit while on a visitor visa. It is not asylum, and you are not breaking any law. If you arrive in Canada on a visitor visa and, during your stay, you discover a course you’re ionate about, you have every right to apply for a study permit.

The process typically involves paying tuition fees, completing your medical exam, providing proof of funds (POF), and submitting your application. Even after your visa is approved, you will need to visit the border to pick up your study permit, where you may be subjected to more questioning.

This transition is entirely 100% lawful and not equivalent to overstaying or seeking asylum. However, it is worth noting that processing a study permit from within Canada is often more expensive. For instance, compare the cost of medical tests in Lagos versus Toronto, and you will understand the difference.

I personally know individuals who successfully transitioned from a visitor visa to a study permit while on visit visa without any family or relation in canada , as well as others whose applications were rejected. Those who were denied simply left Canada and retained their visitor visa status.

As of today, transitioning from a visitor visa to a study permit is a legitimate and legal process. Only the transition from a visitor visa to a closed work permit via LMIA has been stopped. I don’t see why this is a point of argument—it’s just due process under the law.
