Former US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said Democrats might have fared better in Tuesday's election if President Joe Biden had exited the race sooner.

Pelosi - one of the most powerful politicians in Washington - told the New York Times that "had the president gotten out sooner, there may have been other candidates in the race".

Her remarks are the latest finger pointing from Democrats after the party lost hold of the White House and potentially both chambers of Congress on Tuesday.

Pelosi is widely reported to have led the Democrats' push to oust Biden, who ended up leaving the race at the end of July after weeks of pressure following a poor debate performance against Donald Trump.

As Biden ended his campaign, he quickly endorsed Vice-President Kamala Harris to take his place. She suffered a bruising defeat to President-elect Trump on Tuesday.

Pelosi told the New York Times: "The anticipation was that, if the president were to step aside, that there would be an open primary."

An open primary would have involved a number of Democratic candidates competing to be elected by party to succeed Biden as their White House nominee.

Pelosi argued that Harris would have done well in such a primary process and it would have made her "stronger going forward".

"But we don’t know that. That didn’t happen. We live with what happened," the California congresswoman, who was re-elected to her 20th term in the House on Tuesday, said.

"And because the president endorsed Kamala Harris immediately, that really made it almost impossible to have a primary at that time. If it had been much earlier, it would have been different."

Speaking to political news outlet Politico, Harris aides also laid the blame at Biden’s feet and said he should have bowed out sooner.

"We ran the best campaign we could, considering Joe Biden was president,” said one unnamed aide. "Joe Biden is the singular reason Kamala Harris and Democrats lost tonight."

However, a former Biden aide told Axios, another political news outlet, that Harris was making excuses.

"How did you spend $1 billion and not win?” said the aide, adding an expletive.

An unnamed former Biden aide told Politico this week that former President Barack Obama's advisers were to blame because they "publicly encouraged Democratic infighting to push Joe Biden out, didn’t even want Kamala Harris as the nominee".

Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat, blamed the election loss on those who plotted to oust Biden.

"For those that decided and moved to break Biden, and then you got the election that you wanted, it’s appropriate to own the outcome and fallout,” he told political outlet Semafor in an interview.

Congressman Tom Suozzi, New York Democratic congressman, said the election loss was partly due to the party's focus on "being politically correct".

He said the party had struggled to counteract Republican attack lines on "anarchy on college campuses, defund the police, biological boys playing in girls' sports, and a general attack on traditional values".

Ritchie Torres, another New York Democratic congressman, posted on X, formerly Twitter, blaming "the far left".

He said radicals within the party had “managed to alienate historic numbers of Latinos, Blacks, Asians, and Jews from the Democratic Party with absurdities like ‘Defund the Police’ or ‘From the River to the Sea’ or ‘Latinx’”.

Independent Senator Bernie Sanders, who ran for president as a Democrat in 2016 and 2020, accused the party in a lengthy statement of abandoning working people.

"While the Democratic leadership defends the status quo, the American people are angry and want change," he wrote. "And they’re right."

He argued Democrats probably wouldn't learn from the election outcome.

But Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison responded on X that Sanders' accusation was "straight up BS".

It is unfair for Nancy Pelosi and Kamala Harris' aides to blame President Biden for Harris crushing defeat.

Without Joe Biden, there wouldn't have been a Kamala Harris at the top echelon of US politics.

During the Democratic second presidential debate in August 2019, Joe Biden and Tulsi Gabbard (pictured) accused Harris of blocking the DNA testing of a death row inmate. Tulsi Gabbard specifically accused Harris of putting 1,500 inmates in jail for marijuana possessions (only to think the same Harris said she'd marijuana use if elected president in 2024). Tulsi Gabbard also accused Harris of keeping inmates in jail beyond their sentences, especially Blacks and Latinos.

Reports by USA Today said Donald Trump expanded his voting base among Blacks and Latinos.

I think Kamala Harris was not the best candidate of the Democratic Party. She was a candidate of expediency. If you look at the election results, almost the same number of voters voted for Donald Trump (the current difference between his current collated figures and the 2020 figures with which he lost stands at 23,495 votes), while the Democratic Party margin stands at 10,938,124 deficit, which means that almost 11 million voters are uned for. This might be due to low voter turnout which may be tied to apathy. But that number would have made a huge difference.

Kamala Harris took the American people for granted. She did not particularly have a sterling record as vice president. She failed spectacularly on some of the tasks she was given and clearly had no charisma to appear she was empathetic. She came off as an Mgbeke quarrelsome woman and made DOnald Trump look good. Trump was talking about fixing the economy (even though he didn't know how), ending Russian-Ukraine war, and securing the border, while Harris had no talking points beyond throwing attacks, lying about women's reproductive health and sundry issues that did not appeal to voters.

She won the women votes, but in smaller numbers than her Democratic predecessors, according to the Guardian UK. White women voted preferentially for Donald Trump, as younger women geared towards him than they did in 2020.

Also, Obama and the celebrities endorsements paled to nothing as Kamala's foundational strategy was weak.

Kamala Harris was simply unsellable and unlikeable. Even though she got the ticket on a platter after Joe Biden was forced out, those who forced him out could not convince the American people why she was the best option.

Kamala Harris was not convinced she was the best option either as she was mostly unprepared during her campaigns.

I think Obama delayed coming in because doing so early would lend credence that he edged out Biden for a woman of colour. Even when he ed later, it did even more damage, because Obama was not popular among black folks because of Kamala's record among them.

Americans are not dumb (same way some folks dreaming that Iran can hurt Israel even when the military technological gap is astonishing and different). whether you like it or not, you just have to leave with the fact that no country come close to the military logistics of USA they have over 700 bases all over the world, the only country to have military base on all the continents. The only country with 11 aircraft carriers. Wars are won on logistics like how quickly you can move ammos, jets, arms, tanks, etc Who you you either you learn or you cry, people win with logic and strategy. When Trump was working his ass off and stating his manifest cleary Harris was just shining teeth like mumu and following celebrities to endorse her,meanwhile trump had Musk on his side. I think the last straw was when she was contradicting herself on Gaza issue. Too much wokeness was her problem. They overestimated the population of woke Americans, focused her campaigns on abortion, women rights and lgbt+ . Her principal failed woefully with the economy and she didn't say what she'll do differently.
