I have a Toyota Camry 2005(automatic), bought the car as Tokunbo in January 2022. Recently decided to do a full body work which made the car spend some weeks at the beater/painter shop.
Before then I have been worrying if the gear oil needs changing as I have never changed the gear oil since I bought it.
Yesterday after the car was brought back, I noticed it kicked a little when I put the car in reverse, just a slight kick but changing to Drive or Neutral is smooth. It got me worried if it was normal or the gear was beginning to have issues or do I need to do the oil change?
Pls advice cause having to change gears in this economy is no easy feat.
Is the slight kick something to worry about?
Is it because the car has not been driven for a while that caused the kick ?
Do I need to change gear oil?

Your expert advice needed please.

this could be your engine/transmission mounts, get them inspected and replace where needed.

Might be due to the car not being driven for quite a while.
Drive and monitor it for a week before u make any conclusion.

I don't know if there is any mechanic around you that has an inspection pit like those there use to have in gas staions for oil change.

Someone has to get under the car and watch the mounts as you shift from drive to reverse, one of your mounts is worn

As for the gear, is it necessary to have the oil changed? I have not had an oil change since I bought it 2yrs ago.

Gear oil should last for 30,000 miles, for extra caution, you can target changing the oil every 20,000 miles. if you no your average mile covered a year, you can better decide when to change the gear oil.
