Aliko Dangote, Africa’s wealthiest businessman, has recently spoken out about the immense challenges facing his refinery operations, emphasizing the power of what he refers to as the "oil industry mafia."

In a statement drawing attention to the deeply entrenched interests within Nigeria's oil sector, Dangote compared the strength of this network to that of drug cartels, saying, “I never knew that the oil industry mafia is stronger than the drug cartel. It’s a big cartel. I will say this everywhere.”

This bold comment comes amid ongoing friction between Dangote's $19 billion refinery and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), as he attempts to navigate the complexities of the oil market. His refinery, which is poised to transform Nigeria's oil refining capabilities, has faced significant obstacles, allegedly stemming from entrenched interests within the sector resistant to competition.

The statement highlights the fierce power struggles in an industry critical to Nigeria’s economy, but one that has been plagued by corruption, inefficiencies, and monopolistic practices. Dangote's revelation has sparked widespread discussion, especially given the scale of his refinery project, which is expected to reduce the country's dependency on imported fuel and drive down fuel prices.

This ongoing tussle between Dangote's refinery and the NNPC underscores the broader issues within Nigeria’s oil industry, as reform efforts continue to clash with the vested interests of those who control large portions of the market. Many are now watching to see if Dangote's refinery can overcome these challenges and disrupt the long-standing oil cartel.

I think they are strong because most government officials who are corrupt are also part of them. I don't think there is any cabals that can be greater than the government of a country except the government don't want to be sincere enough about it

Dangote doesn't know the same cartels are everywhere from drug to mining to oil and gas. Let him mention it so we can correlate

There are big players who can match you dollar to dollar and it's not what you are used to. BUA is also launching a refinery, yet you act like the only new guy on the block. Are you not the chief cartel of many industry yourself ? Shut up let's have some peace

Taking a government to court is normal everywhere in the world except in countries like Saudi and Russia.

Yes, Dangote knows because he is also a member of the drug cartel. If not, how would he know which is stronger?

Last year, or probably the year before it when he said that once his refinery was operational, importation of refined fuels will stop.

The Petroleum Industry Acts stipulates that only oil companies with refining capabilities, will be allowed to import fuels.

It seems the industry players aren't taking things sitting down. These guys have been into the importation of AGO and other products before Dangote became the cement king of Nigeria. They aren't ready to be at the mercy of Dangote, who is basically an upstart in this business, despite this huge refinery. One shouldn't never be at the mercy of anyone!

The truth is that there should be a level playing field. Dangote's desire to always monopolize any industry he gets involved in needs to be checkmated. He is presently eating humble pie.

One thing Dangote can gain from his present predicament is to invest in products the country has comparative advantage in.

Though he has found it difficult getting local buyers for his products, he is finding ready markets for them overseas. That's the way it should be. That's the power of comparative advantage.

Brilliant interview. I watched the whole interview.
This comment was actually in response to a question about other refineries (out the country) selling their products at a lower price just to undercut Dangote.
They can sell at a loss just to get Dangote out of business. He said that would not be possible because they do not want to take the naira which he's willing to take for payments.
Nigerian journalists are a lazy bunch. Someone is trying to create another twist to what he actually said. This is why you can believe everything you read especially from fly-by-night fake journalists like Sahara TRASH reporters.
