I traveled to Nigeria and stayed in Lagos for two weeks, and there's a funny culture I observed there that is not common to every other place. In Lagos almost everybody is a beggar. Even if you ask a person for direction, after directing you, he is expecting you to give him something. It was really weird for me to see adults begging anyhow, it's really shameful. I gave some money to this guy that begged me money, this guy actually did nothing for me, but do you know that this guy was bold enough to tell me that the money I gave him was small, that it cannot even buy him a plate of food. This happened more than three times with different people. Even in the hotel where I lodged, people there will be looking at you as if you owe them something.

Lagos is still the best place to be, I've met foreign nationals born and raised in Lagos who claim to be proud Lagos bred, they are sharper and have this Nigerian spirit in them.

@OP Your experience is not peculiar to Lagos alone, even in Abuja, you'd still find people hoping to get tips from you. It's the economic situation and free spirit of Nigerians to assist one another. Don't take it too serious.

If they're not begging from you, they will be trying to scam you. It's the national ethos

Even when you just stop to buy something from a street trader,you are likely to find someone standing buy and begging you to also get something for him or her or a bit of cash.

That thing most Lagosians refer to as "being sharp" is nothing more than an opportunity to fleece the other person to put it mildly , otherwise i would say its outright attempt to steal from the other person most times

Me being stingy? You don't know what you are saying, I am a chronic giver any day anytime. But the culture of an able-bodied man begging anyhow does not look good at all. If it were one or two people noticed doing it, it could be ignored, but when the whole society see such behavior as a norm, then it's bad and shameful.

Most places in Nigeria are inhabited by poor people because most Nigerians are poor. Lagos has more poor people than rich ones

From the look of things, u probably returned from Benin Republic, Ghana or somewhere broke, I don't understand how someone who claims to return from another country will be meeting people who requests for money after giving a simple direction, u haven't met half of the people in Lagos, u probably went to an area at your level and u are complaining.

Why are you people so tribalistic? So, everything now has to be viewed through tribal lenses? What brought Yoruba tribe into this discussion now? Are Yoruba the only ones living in Lagos? It's like someone saying something he observed about Abuja, which is a cosmopolitan city and some Abawa, Basa, Gwandara, Gbagyi (Gwari) persons who are the indigenous of the Federal Capital Territory will come and say that they are attacking them, you can never see something like that. Nwachukwu, when did you leave Nigeria that you are now forming Londoner? I am not saying you are exaggerating, but did they force you or offered to beat you if you did not give them? There will always be poor people among human even in the country where you are. Since nobody forced you, stop generalizing Lagosians. Did Dangote daughter or Otedollar walked up to you to beg? Since they never opened up to you while concluding for them or think all of them are begging for money?

I attended an event at Ikoyi sometime ago, and while leaving, at the car park several miserable looking area skanks were just swarming around menacingly begging for money. It was such an irritating thing to watch.

That shows the level of devastation the clueless duo of Buhari and Tinubu have done to Nigeria and Nigerians.
Last time i visited the country, it was begging galore at the airport from technically everyone that has one work or another to do within that environment.

When something is a norm in a society, you don't need a magnifying glass to notice that it is prevalent. After Lagos, I traveled to Port Harcourt but did not experience such begging culture.
