The University of Ibadan has acknowledged the receipt of a total sum of N201,114,650 as school fees for 1,370 students for the 2023/2024 Academic session.

The money, which was paid directly into the University was for the students who applied for the student loan through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) initiative of the federal government.

In a leaked viral memo from the registrar, Ganiyu Saliu to the Dean of Students’ Affairs, the institution assured that any student who is a beneficiary of the NELFUND loan and has already paid levies for the session fee is entitled to a refund.

It added that to apply for a refund, the student must write through the Dean of Students to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, providing their details for the refund.

The memo which was sighted by The Nation was also confirmed by a source who pleaded not to be quoted.

“The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has remitted the sum of Two Hundred and One Million, One Hundred and Fourteen Thousand, Six Hundred and Fifty Naira (N201,114,650.00) Only to the University for the 2023/2024 Academic Session.

“This amount is to cover the fees of One Thousand, Three Hundred and Seventy (1,370) students of our University who applied for the NELFUND loan.

“The Bursary Department is currently processing the fund to enable the concerned students to obtain Smart Receipt.

“Any student who is a beneficiary of the NELFUND loan and has already paid levies for the session fee is entitled to a refund.

“To apply for a refund, the student must write through the Dean of Students to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, providing their details for the refund. A photocopy of the original payment receipt must be attached to each application.

“Please note that this information is applicable ONLY to students who applied for the NEL FUND loan, and whose applications were approved.”

When The Nation visited UI, the source who confirmed the memo said the lists of beneficiaries would be compiled by the Bursary Department so that students whose applications were approved by NELFUND would know themselves.

He described the situation as a good development for the sector, noting that it would boost the morale of many students in the Federal government through student loans.

Kudos to the FG. Some bitter people will not like this news, even though they have also applied for the loan and collected the money to pay their fees.

I don't see the sense in offering student loans to students in a country where the vast majority of graduates are without jobs. It just does not make sense of any kind. undecided

Tinubu still need to do a lot more to make his istration a success.

He must increase Nigeria electricity generating capacity to 10,000 minimum in his first 4 years.

Ensure herdsmen are cut to size with no room for killing in the middlebelt under guise of whatever name it can be called.

Exchange rate should come down to atleast ₦1000 if he can't return it back to the ₦700 he met it. Personally both Edu n Cardoso should be sacked cos they have not shown any attribute they can handle the ministry they were saddled with.

He should end oil thief n ensure the entire management both senior n junior staff of the NNPC is sacked if the refinery does not start producing refined product this August which they claim will start after several shifts with billions of dollars n not naira down the drain.

Large scale farming should be embraced n invested on vigorously like it a number one priority to ensure food security.

Are you hoping for someone to graduate and 3 years after graduation don't have anything doing?
One of the key functions of education is teach the recepient productivity, someone who can't be productive in any form is not worth educating, the loan makes alot of sense.
Tuition fees were hiked, subsidies pulled out, this loan makes alot of sense.

Those without jobs won’t pay back during their unemployment phase.

They’ll only start paying back when they have jobs or self employed to an extent.

This student loan is a great intervention. Parent will not have any excuse now to say they are not sending their sons/daughters to higher institution because of poverty.

It means that you’ll prefer that indigent students should not further their studies, until they can afford to do so or until jobs are available.
You have forgotten that preparation always precede opportunities, because you cannot predict when and where opportunities will come knocking.

If you were one of those that spoke against this initiative and you apply for the student loan, the thunder that will strike you is still warming up.

Then don't apply for it. It's not by force.

Plenty diligent students will obtain the loan and graduate with a first class instead of not being able to afford an education.

Giving N200 million to over 1000 students has now become a giant feat for agbad0rians to jubilate about abi?

Meanwhile, yahaya bello, just one man alone with one head on his shoulders stole a whooping N60 Billion naira and the same agbad0rians overlook it till today because he's an APC man cry

Should we then tell all students to leave school and come to stay in your house because there won't be need to go to school since they won't get job? At least thank FG government for this one first, then; place your other complaint. If FG don't assist in this regards, won't students and parents find all means to pay?

Oga it doesn't work like that. There's what is called "enabling environment". They people protesting and crying of hunger do think they are all jobless? If there is an enabling environment, a lot of things will sort itself out.
