Help With My Volkswagen Jetta!!! (1114 Views)

Hello everyone. Kindly oblige me with the long read, trying to be as detailed as possible... ---- I bought a Volkswagen Jetta 2006 model with 2.5 engine on the 24th of May from GreatStephenHO at Itire Lagos. At the point of purchase, we went with VW mechanic who scanned the car and we had 2 drive tests. The car was ceritifed good to go; only major defect was that the AC wasn't working and some other minor fixes like speakers, wheel speed sensors, wiper washer container. We drove it home and on Monday, the same mechanic came to pick it up for servicing (oil and filter change), AC repair, replacement of the sensors and wiper washer container. He returned it Wednesday night and said all was good. It was tested and good. On Friday of same week, I drove the car out and within a short distance, I noticed the exhaust was smoking excessively (white smoke). All through that day, I noticed the smoking would stop for a bit and after a while it would be excessive again. By Sunday, the car was jerking and would shut down while in motion. It starts immediately if I restart. I also noticed the check engine light was blinking. I suspected spark plugs and asked a nearby mechanic to help check the plugs because the jerking and smoking were getting abit much. We changed spark plugs but noticed one of them had oil and was completely dead. We also noticed the oil level of the car was short which indicated that the engine was burning oil. The car runs fine when the plugs are fixed. But the smoking is quite bad, even with oil treatment, it still smokes. Neutral mechanics are saying the engine is bad and needs replacement, while the VW mechanic who serviced it said it is most likely an oil separator problem and it needs to be replaced. My own headache is what could have gone wrong because this car was working fine at the point of purchase and pre-servicing. I've even taken it far to call the previous owner who happens to be an elderly man and he said the car engine was in good condition before selling to GreatStephenHO and only the AC was bad. It's my first VW and I really thought the engines were rugged and quite durable. Please VW experts in the house, do we really need to change the engine or something else might be wrong. |

Next time, for fixes...be physically present at the mechanics workshop. A word is enough for the wise. 5 Likes |

blinking check engine light is misfire spark plugs soaking oil is another cylinder problem. You need a third party to diagnose the vehicle and give you how to proceed whether engine replacement or overhaul the current engine. 1 Like |

Run a compression test on all cylinders. It will reveal the truth. |

You see that plug that is soaking oil,the ring is bad.Maybe your mechanic tampered with it while replacing the oil.Bad piston ring.Needs a new ring.

Oga... Go and change the engine, and get peace of mind... That original owner that you called and the company you bought the car from are partners... Dont expect the man to say otherwise... Replace that engine... Whether mi or or major fix on it..

Possibly you used the wrong oil or the mechanic that serviced for you used a cheap wrong oil... should have asked them which oil they have been using all along.. then use same. Also make sure you always monitor by yourself when a mechanic is servicing your car. Don't give your car to a mechanic and ask them to go service for you, except they have earned the trust over time. I personally have the mechanic come to the house to do my service in the morning before starting the car. It's almost like a custom now. That's just by the way though. Another lesson we all prospective car buyers can learn here is that 5 minutes test drive is not testing. When testing a car, ensure it runs for at least 2 hours. fuel and drive for a reasonable distance of like 50km and return. Most sellers with car that have this kind of issues would deliberate rush you into test drive for a short distance while so you don't see the white smoke. They do it delibrately. My advice: in the meantime, try changing the oil seal on the top cover cos that's what make the plug to be soaked in oil.. and also have the plug coils checked, since you have changed the plugs.. If you have the means, start planning for an engine replacement. 5 Likes |

You should meet greatstephen autos.. And the mechanic you came with.. Stephen probably sold you a lemon that was patched up to work fine while the mechanic might have tampered with things.. But. Then.. Plugs don't get soaked overnight. It means the engine been having issues for a long time. And oil doesn't burn like that... |

Ur mechanic cause the issue. 1. He suppose 2 ask d previous owner d oil that's inside. 2. He suppose 2 drain all d oil for full day b4 switching to prefer choice of oil 3. Nothing bad for now... U can still fix d ring for that one cylinder.. 4. Nice car..nxt time witness what ur mechanic s doing. |
