In my own view, Dangote should have embarked on about 100,000 to about 300,000 bpd refinery. The total consumption by Nigeria of petroleum products is about 500,000 bpd. Dangote refinery is about 650,000 bpd Petroleum Refinery.

Dangote mentioned in the past that when his refinery is ready, the refinery would be able to supply all Nigeria needs and he can also export o other African countries. In my own view, this a very bad idea.

It is not good for a country such as Nigeria with over 200 million people to depend solely on one refinery. What if the refinery is damaged? What of the case when the refinery is shut down for maintenance? Of all the countries, with more than 200 million people, there is no such country that depends on just 1 refinery.

If Dangote had embarked on a smaller capacity refinery, such a smaller capacity would have been producing refined petroleum products by now.

How did we manage with no refineries at all?
Excess production can always be stored in a reserve to cushion against sudden and unforseen circumstances.

BUA is building a refinery of about half the size of Dangote's in Akwa Ibom.

Dangote is not stopping anyone from building theirs. The government is also refurbishing its refineries.

So, your point that Dangote should have built something smaller so the country doesn't become too dependent on him turns logic on its head.

Nigeria refineries in Warri, Port Harcourt and Kaduna were supplying Nigeria refined petroleum needs until the fallout of June 12, 1993 crisis..

Nigeria has never depended on just one refinery. The issue is that around the June 12, 1993 crisis some Nigerians discovered they could make lots of money by importing refined petroleum products. Since the June 12, 1993 crisis, Nigeria refineries have not been working optimally due to the corruption practices in that sector.

Now, refined petroleum products are being imported into Nigeria. However, the refined petroleum products are not just from one refinery.

Then, Dangote should stop running to the government or CBN for assistance. The more functional refineries in Nigeria, the better. I believe Nigeria government refurbishing its refineries is waste of time and waste of money. The refurbishment are opportunities to embezzle money.

What is a refinery doing in Kaduna state 600 km away from any crude oil ?

I too can't get my head around that one, especially as it can't actually refine the light crude that Nigeria produces

We have to import heavy crude and then spend a fortune to pump it to Kaduna. Unbelievable.

Nigerian leaders have been making bad decision after bad decision for over 60 years.
