Residents of Gaya in Kano State on Sunday took to the streets to protest against the dissolution of the Gaya Emirate by the state government.

Gaya Emirate is among the emirate councils recently dissolved by the Kano State Government after the Kano Emirates Council Law of 2019 was amended.

The new law, enacted by the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)-controlled House of Assembly, undid the law that former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje used in 2020 to create the additional emirates and dethrone the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

The dissolution of the emirate councils was finalised when Governor Abba Yusuf signed the amendment bill into law on Thursday and ordered the emirs of the affected emirates, including Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir, Emir of Gaya, to hand over to Deputy Governor Abdulsalam Gwarzo. Gwarzo oversees the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

Residents reported that the dethroned emir vacated the palace at midnight on Thursday, with no immediate signs of violence or resistance. Armed security personnel were present in the town, maintaining order.

Protesters expressing their dissatisfaction with the dissolution of the Gaya Emirates

However, the situation took a turn on Sunday morning when residents took to the streets, wielding placards and chanting anti-government songs. They accused the government of political motives behind the dissolution and demanded the reinstatement of their emirate and the removed emir.

“Some people are not happy with this development. It feels like an injustice to our community,” said Abubakar Shuaibu, a resident of Gaya.

Another protester, Aminu Abdullahi, stated, “We see this as a political move to undermine our traditional institutions. The government should reconsider its decision and respect our cultural heritage.”

The protesters pledged their allegiance to the traditional leadership and called for the reinstatement of the Gaya Emirate.

Governor Abba Yusuf has yet to respond to the protests. However, the government’s initial stance suggests that the dissolution is part of a broader strategy to centralise control and streamline the traditional leadership structure in Kano State.

The developments continue to unfold as the affected communities await further clarification and possible resolutions from the state authorities.

Obey the state house of assembly laws, signed by the state government.

Why protesting when some of your people were represented in the HOA sittings that made the laws?

We don't need protests in Nigeria now, we need everyone to be quiet till the end of tinubulation in 2031.

Please reserve your energy to survive.

Removing five first class emirs all at the same time for no good reason other than politics will surely have consequences. There is no way the people won’t fight back after enjoying a kind of independence from central traditional rulership from Kano.

The governor and all stakeholders in Kano really need to sit down together and find a common and sensible solution. No point throwing the state into an avoidable crisis simply because of politics. Some people need to drop their ego and accept a realistic solution.

But the people cannot fight back after enjoying better livelihood underprevious governments?

They cannot fight back unemployment?
They cannot fight back inflation?
They cannot fight back hunger and strife?
They cannot fight back insecurity?

If you want to discuss fighting back, start from where it matters most.. otherwise, you are being political yourself.

This gov embarked on irrelevant issues. Did the people complain to him that they don't want Bayero and others? Why is he going against the peoples wishes. This gov wanted Sanusi but the people wanted Bayero. Why can't he do the peoples wishes and allow the sleeping dogs to lie. Misplaced priorities. How many roads, schools, hospitals has he built for the people since he got there instead of Emirship tussle. At the rate he is going his performance will be worse than Obis that didn't build one school in 8 years. grin

How does bringing Sanusi add value to the life of an average Kano indigenes ? Kano is currently under tension because the governor's decision is unpopular with the people. Do you know the respect the Bayero family has in Kano ? Hope he wont come and disturb Tinubu when it snowballs out of hand and turns to full blown riots.

You speak more like an APC paid merchant.
I would love to see your stand when Ganduje sacked Sanusi despite a court order and went ahead to banish him from the land because of politics

Even Sanusi acknowledged he did something wrong and said he has learnt his lesson. One of the laws of power is Never outshine the master. Bayero has not publicly criticized the gov like Sanusi did. Don't equate the two and don't be politically biased.

Your inclination is clear, it is only an unreasonable person(s) like APC and Buhari that will not question Ganduje then. A man caught on camera stealing dollars and his people are suffering
We all know that they wanted Sanusi out because they knew Kwankwaso is his man and he is not with them.
Everybody can't be fooled in this country oga.

You are biased. Stop it 🛑.

Sanusi and Bayero are from the same grand father, they are family.
Blame Gandollard for all these happening today. He brought his ugly politics like the way imperialists (colonialists) did to our kings then.

So 🛑, please.

Who gave Sanusi the staff of Office? Was it not Ganduje? He could have manipulated the process if he wanted but didn't. Yet Sanusi overstepped his boundaries by publicly criticizing the gov and Buhari. How many kings do that in Nigeria, not even the Sultan or Awujale or Ooni or Oba of Benin dare do that.

It was Kwankwaso that made Sanusi Emir in 2024.
Don't twist the facts as you even lack knowledge of the genesis of the matter. Sanusi saw how governor stuffing dollars, embarrassing the state, are you saying he should keep quiet.
I repeat, not everyone is foolish in Nigeria.
I know your type, keep ing APC but do so with common sense.

Hope Sanusis enthronement reduces the price of fuel for Kano indigenes or build schools, roads, hospitals etc. Is that what govs are elected for? Making development harder for Kano people because he has created more enemies for himself.

Sanusi said GEJ was corrupt and was exposing the corrupt practices in GEJ's istration and NNPC. He fought hard against GEJ and was very anti-PDP just like Kwakwanso back then. Kwakwanso, his relation (then in APC) protected Sanusi by quickly making him Emir to shield Sanusi from persecution, despite the fact that he wasn't the favourite of the king makers. Politicians are all and same. They are all after their own selfish interest.

Whatever happens in Kano shouldn't be my concern because we have a lot of pressing issues as a nation, we haven't talked about the economy that has been in coma for one year, they are talking about some sets of greedy politicians. Sanusi is one of those that helped Apc to come to power in 2015, he thought we have forgotten his role, political emir.
