President Tinubu has directed the Federal Ministry of Education to formulate necessary modalities for the inclusion of National Open University (NOUN) graduates within the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) framework, particularly those within the service age bracket, as allowed by the law.

The president gave the directive during his presentation at the 13th convocation ceremony of the university on Saturday, April 13, 2024. at the University’s Convocation Arena, Jabi, Abuja.

Represented by Biodun Saliu, Deputy Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), President Tinubu also disclosed the resolution of the longstanding issue regarding the ittance of NOUN law graduates to law schools in the country.

“With the changing demographics of our great nation, the government has recognised the importance of allowing NOUN graduates to participate in the NYSC scheme.

The president noted that the gathering was not just a celebration of the graduates’ academic successes but also highlighted the crucial role that Open and Distance Education (ODL) has in shaping the nation’s educational framework.

He therefore affirmed his istration’s commitment to enhancing ODL to expand access to higher education across the nation, emphasizing that the utilization of ODL is essential for meeting the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“We will continue to do this in order to improve quality, access and affordability.

“Government is, therefore, committed through the Federal Ministry of Education and the NUC to provide the enabling environment to ensure a good delivery of this mode of education in Nigeria,” Tinubu added.

He acknowledged the challenge that many school leavers face in gaining ission to traditional universities and emphasized the necessity for enhanced research in technology at NOUN to accommodate more young school leavers and improve social safety nets for the people.

The president was pleased to note that NOUN has become a central figure in advancing the government’s commitment to achieving educational goals through ICT.

Are you a NOUN student?

The NOUN students have been rejoicing since and their respective school VCs already informed them about this 2 days ago and they love it.

One of the biggest achievements of Tinubu's 1 year in office!

He has done what no other president in Nigeria's history could do grin

Imagine the sleepless nights it took to get this done grin

Tinubu ers should go and celebrate this "landmark achievement"

Don’t you think this is worth celebrating in your camp since the only thing this government has brought on Nigerians is suffering since they came to office?

Wow... This is historic! The nonsensical discrimination promoted by the elimination of certain graduates from the scheme will now come to an end.

UNISA is South Africa's largest institution, which is also based on open & distance learning like NOUN and it is always ranked high in the country, but here in Nigeria, we must defecate on our own things and praise that of others.

Congrats to NOUN students.

Before Tinubu, were you not poor? You’ll still be poor in the next 8 years and still be shedding tears bitterly.

Go and hustle. Your mates are making it, stop wasting your time on Nairaland finding threads to be bitter about.

This thread is about NOUN students mobilizing for NYSC, it is a great news to those students. Let them celebrate in peace and you can choose to cry and gnash teeth. It is your right!

And you too would call yourself a full-time graduate tomorrow. Shouldn't you know it only applies to those who fall within the age bracket? 😏

NOUN students don't bribe lecturers like those of you in conventional universities. They don't even know who marks their scripts.

President Tinubu, just direct the scrapping of that fraudulent scheme called NYSC... It has run its course.

Let people graduate and face their careers squarely. Let's quit compelling them to partake in a clearly dumb and fake scheme to unite a nation that has kept dividing along religious and ethnic lines for decades now.

If NYSC must continue, it should be fully voluntary. The certificate should no longer be a prerequisite for government jobs and political appointments.

I've seen full time graduates from state and federal universities who cannot compete with NOUN graduates but because it's a distance learning institution, they look down on their graduates. I love the level-playing field.

Congrats to NOUN students.
It won't stop

Your cert will still read NOUN

Why are you so bitter to the point that you’re breaking nairaland’s rules? Shouldn’t you be celebrating?

See, I get it. I understand how challenging it can be to defend a useless government day and night, but don’t take the frustration out on your fellow citizens demanding justice and fairness for all Nigerians.

Rule 2. Don't abuse, bully, deliberately insult/provoke, fight, or wish harm to Nairaland OR THEIR TRIBES.
Rule 3. Don't threaten, or DEFEND violent acts against any person, tribe, race, animals, or group (e.g. rape).
