This is a photograph of a meal ticket for the University of Ibadan student cafeteria, in the year 1972. At that time, a full plate of food cost only 25 kobo. SOURCE https://naijaphilia.com/blog/2023/01/24/naija-throwback-university-of-ibadan-meal-ticket-in-1972/

Roboto11: It's a reflection of how bad the economy became, not the student's population. That was a time when $1 was less than N1. At that time, even if students were over 100k in the university, they would feed for the same amount. Those were really times to study in Nigeria as university students were treated with respect and dignity. 16 Likes |

adler777: Oh lord. Not even in the advanced world are students given free food. Talk less of doing so half a million people everyday. It's not everything we cry over. 3 Likes |

Roboto11: Who said anything about free food? Try to read before commenting... 😒 From the beginning of this thread, nobody mentioned anything about free food. Can't you see that's a meal ticket with a price on it? Stop rushing to comment like a kangaroo 🦘 32 Likes 1 Share |

Roboto11: To answer your question and give some more relevant facts: (1). As at 1972-73 the student population at UI was 4,110 (2). The University originally started as the University College, Ibadan (UCI), with 104 students who began lectures 18 Jan 1948. (3). By end of 1992/93 session, student population was 14,632. In addition, there were over 3,500 external degree students receiving lectures & tutorials on part-time basis. (4). The latest estimate of UI student population as at year 2022 is 41,743 SOURCES https://www.ui.edu.ng/uihistory https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Ibadan |

Roboto11: You're proving hard to correct, that's your business anyways. The OP never wrote about free meals, neither did I, you just assumed he was talking about free food and started replying like a court typist... Olodo 🤡 19 Likes |

adler777: Sharap. The vouchers were given as stacks to students. They were free vouchers which had a worth ascribed to them. Of course, being the recidivist you are,you don't want to accept it because it defeats your cries of woe. |

Roboto11: Lol... you're the one exhibiting recidivism here, not me. You find it difficult to it that you're commenting based on your background knowledge of an age-long story that university students were given free meals, whereas this thread never implied that or stated such. The guts you have to argue in the face of glaring evidence is shocking. I no get your time abeg. 🥴 9 Likes |

NaijaphiliaBlog: Interesting! And to think that someone actually kept that meal ticket for so long. Indeed, those were the days of Nigeria's then nascent University system. In 1972, these were the only 6 universities existing in Nigeria: 1. University of Ibadan (est. 1948). 2. University of Nigeria, Nsukka (est. 1955). 3. University of Ife (now OAU, est. 1961). 4. University of Northern Nigeria (now ABU, est. 1962). 5. University of Lagos (est. 1962). 6. University of Benin (est. 1970). The next 7 universities were all established in 1975 ie 7. University of Maiduguri. 8. University of Calabar. 9. University of Jos. 10. University of Ilorin. 11. University of Port-Harcourt. 12. University of Sokoto (now Usman Danfodio University). 13. Abdullahi Bayero University College Kano (Now Bayero University Kano). |

KosiGee: You are absolutely correct. For perspective and comparison, let's use Nigeria's minimum wage as a basis: A. In 1972, the monthly minimum wage was about N60 ( ie £60). B. In 2023, it is N30,000. Looking at school fees, feeding, accommodation, books, transport, etc, it wouldn't have been so easy for an average parent to send their children to a university at that time. |

Roboto11: Where does it say the meal ticket was given for free?? Show me where it says it. Na wa for your comprehension. |
