To answer your question and give some more relevant facts:

(1). As at 1972-73 the student population at UI was 4,110

(2). The University originally started as the University College, Ibadan (UCI), with 104 students who began lectures 18 Jan 1948.

(3). By end of 1992/93 session, student population was 14,632. In addition, there were over 3,500 external degree students receiving lectures & tutorials on part-time basis.

(4). The latest estimate of UI student population as at year 2022 is 41,743

For perspective and comparison, let's use Nigeria's minimum wage as a basis:

A. In 1972, the monthly minimum wage was about N60 ( ie £60).
B. In 2023, it is N30,000.

Looking at school fees, feeding, accommodation, books, transport, etc, it wouldn't have been so easy for an average parent to send their children to a university at that time.
