1. Know that the custom papers provided WILL BE 100% fake . Know this and have peace.
2. You should carry along a competent mechanic not one that would allow you buy a lemon so as to have a constant source of patronage from you when the car start acting up.
3. Ensure you open the bonnet and check the oil level and smell.. it can reveal a lot
4. If you start the engine and the radiator fan starts blowing immediately.. off engine and walk away.. they've tampered with the wiring .
Don't attempt to buy and fix later.
Same goes with AC and PS systems.
5. Ensure you drive long enough to allow all the 5 or 6 ears shift in and out.. also make sure the temp gauge gets to middle and listen to engine noise when idling.. if for any reason the seller is hesitant or reluctant to allow you reach decent speed. Kukuma drive back and walk away.
6. Make sure all the light and symbols on the dashboard comes on when you put the ignition to ON position. Many a dubious car dealer will use black tape to cover the check engine light and Airbag light to deceive many a gullible buyer.
7. Check the body thoroughly.. if you see any new paint work in patches especially the bumpers. Just walk away . It came through bush.
8. Check exhaust sound and smoke . A lot can be discerned fron that.
9. When driving the car. Check stability and centering. If the car feels off . It's most certain it's been involved in accident and written off as salvage only for our brethren to import and patch-fix in Ladino.
10. Finally. Even if all this checks out. Before you pay. Run a VIN NUMBER report.. abeg.. e get why..

Nothing like perfect car.. just aim to get something decent and safe to drive

thanks sir for this detailed explanation. A friend told me not to buy from any car dealer, that they probably must have tampered with the car and remove some stuff. He said he knows his way in getting good car from alaba or tincan. How true is getting a car from alaba directly from container?

Good advice, however, that number 7 is crap. Have you imported a car before? May I suggest you visit the ptml or tincan to see how they handle the cars roughly. You go see say that number 7 no follow. Cos here is what, if the car has very noticeable dings, dents, or scratches, same prospective buyers will be fixated on that as if it has anything to do with the functionality of the car. I have had to respray parts of two cars I have sold in the past. In one instance, the paint had peeled considerably on the surface of the hood, roof and boot, while the other had a very nasty gash on the body from rough handling at the port. Both cars were clean title at the time and duly cleared. If I left it in the state it was, same prospective buyers will be making silly offers because of those cosmetic issues. I'd say just ask questions as to why the part was painted and see if it makes sense. In my case, I had abroad pics so it was easy for all to see the state it left obodo oyinbo.
