Pre-commissioning tests of the 27.5km Lagos Blue Line running from Mile 2 (Okokomaiko) in the east to Marina in the west have commenced.

The Lagos Blue Line will have 13 Train Stations and, unlike the Diesel-powered Red Line, will be operated on Electric Motor Units (EMUs) consisting of self-propelled carriages using electricity for motive power.

This means that the rail tracks will be electrified and that it will be life-threatening for anybody to attempt to cross the rail lines.

Although the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has already fenced off the rail tracks of the Blue Line, this warning is still pertinent because previous experience is that some people have a habit of cutting such fences in order to create illegal thoroughfares for themselves.

HISTORY OF THE LAGOS METRO LINES
The idea of a rapid rail transit system in Lagos state was conceived in 1983 with the Lagos Metroline network, conceived by Alhaji Lateef Jakande who was the State governor from 1979 to 1983.

That initial Metroline project was jettisoned in 1985 by the then military head of State, Muhammadu Buhari at a cost of over $78 million to the state's tax payers.

In 2003, the then governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, revived the rail network for Lagos state with a formal announcement of its construction.

The initial cost of $135 million was proposed for the greater Lagos Urban Transportation Project, to be implemented by the then newly formed Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA).

After its formation, LAMATA initially concentrated on developing a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, running from Mile 12 to Lagos Island.

In 2008, LAMATA started making progress with the rail project, focusing on the Blue Line and the Red Line.

The Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) network is a major component of the 30-year Strategic Transport Master Plan (STMP) which has been developed to guide as a com for the development of public transport infrastructures in the State.

COMPONENTS OF LRMT
The Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) is a network of urban rail-based systems covering six major corridors and one monorail routes of high commuter traffic demand within and beyond the metropolitan Lagos extending to border areas of Ogun State.

The network is fully integrated with planned and existing water transport and BRT routes. These lines are:

1. Blue Line
Okokomaiko to Marina

2. Brown Line
Mile 12 to Marina

3. Green Line
Marina to Lekki Free Trade Zone (Airport)

4. Orange Line
Ikeja to Agbowa

5. Purple Line
Redemption Camp to Ojo

6. Red Line
Agbado to Oyingbo/Iddo

7. Yellow Line
Otta to National Theatre

Don't Cross the Blue Line: Lagos Warns Residents

The Lagos State government has issued a warning against crossing the Blue Line Rail from either side in early 2023.
The governor warns that the new Blue Line rail is an electrified rail and that it is necessary for Lagosians to stay off the tracks.
"The Blue Line rail is an electrified system; therefore, there is a need for citizens to keep off the tracks."
"And if you must cross from one side to the other, you must use the overhead bridge in order to prevent electrocution"
