N45bn IGR: Seizure of funds by OBJ’s govt made Lagos think like sovereign state — OSINBAJO

October 15, 2021

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has challenged state governors to invest in areas of economic advantage, saying that Lagos State was able to grow its Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, because it started thinking like a sovereign state when its allocation from the central government was seized.

Professor Osinbajo said this at Ekiti Economic and Investment summit tagged ‘Fountain Summit 2021’ organised by the Ekiti State government to find sustainable solutions to some socio-economic issues besetting the state.

Recall that the istration of President Olusegun Obasanjo withheld the monthly allocation to Lagos State for a while.

At the summit, he, alongside Governors of Ekiti, Lagos, Edo and Kaduna states, Kayode Fayemi, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Godwin Obaseki and Nasir el-Rufai, respectively, also called for state police.

While speaking on economy, the Vice President said: “Attracting investments to any state should be the major focus of state chief executives because that is the revenue hub and determinant of how happy the people of any state will be in of economic development with their standard of living.

“But while trying to grow investments, we must be cautious of multiple taxations; it weighs down businesses.

“Ekiti is a business-friendly environment. Ekiti has also excelled in the aspect of ease of doing business. You have vast arable lands for agriculture.

“Let me say that Ekiti has a bigger economy than many Africa nations. The question we should ask ourselves is that if I were the landlord of this sub-nation, how do we survive?

“During my time as a Commissioner in Lagos, we started with N600 million monthly Internally Generated Revenues, IGRs, in 1999.

“The seizure of Lagos funds by President Olusegun Obasanjo made us think like a sovereign state.

“Today, Lagos is making over N45 billion monthly."

Restructuring Nigeria will surely produce great progress for the country.
Lagos achieved her celebrated IGR because she pushed to the brink at a time.
Restructure Nigeria and let all those state depending on others for survival be on their own, they will surely come out with survival plan that will make them great eventually

We did it in Lagos! Those hating on us today don't know our story. They have a thing to learn from us .

We built our success and land on love not hate and bigotry. For us, our land must remain blessed so it can bless us first and others next.
It was audacious but all we have is our people, our land and Eledumare. We were blessed by Eledumare with great visionary leaders in ile karo ojiire. We love our land and this great nation.

We challenged the military. We became too hot for the military and they hurriedly moved capital away from Lagos to Abuja . We ed forces with other patriotic Nigerians to sack the military. The military led by IBB and later late Gen. Abacha and Gen. Abdulsalami punished us for opposing the military .

Our once bustling Central Business districts with mouth gaping skyscrapers became a ghostown, the military moved the Stock Exchange, they moved NPA and even built a ship house in Abuja that has no sea! The military thought they can break our resolve to be great and give hope to the rest of the South West and other patriotic Nigerians who have the indomitable Lagos Spirit.

When we eventually forced the military to give back the power to the people. The military, using the fund it made available to those who served their istration, still attempted to give us a leader but we remained adamant and chose our own leader . In 1999, we chose Asiwaju Tinubu, a tireless worker and first-class public and strategist and we gave him all our .

From the Lagos the military abandoned in filth, filth in almost every corner of our streets to bomb blast and state sponsored assassination of our leaders to us suffering from hardship that was as bad that we could barely afford milk, malaria medicines etc.

We used sawdust in place of kerosene, we drank dongoyaro leaves and burn orange peels to fight malaria and mosquitoes , we drank 'eruku Oshodi' ,low grade cocoa powder dusts, as beverage but we kept on going to school.

We protected our schools and universities and rallied our Yoruba intellectuals all over the world and SW. The military told us there's no job waiting for us after school yet we kept sending our boys and girls to school and kept paying bursaries to our university students. Our universities were the forte where our endangered leaders found refuge.

From Lagos to the whole of SW to Igbomina in Kwara and Kogi and our Itsekiri kith and kin in Delta, we never gave up hope on ourselves and our land.

Omg, we really suffered and lost a lot of valiant men and women. So many paid the ultimate price like Late Chief Mrs Tejuoso, Pa Alfred Rewane, Mrs Kudirat Abiola, Chief MKO Abiola (GCFR), among many others.

I still till date how the Dean of Student in one of our foremost federal universities in the SW was crying like a baby that the military is denying them of funding because of our Yoruba intelligentsia are actively ing the struggle against the military. We comforted one another.

We worked very hard, we prayed hard , we blessed our land and ed our political, religious, traditional and community leaders.

Today, we are a testimony of the limitless power of possibilities of a collective .

Please us by bringing your investments to the South west. We know how to build and defend the oppressed. It's in our DNA!

Please bring your investments to Lagos today!

That is because Lagos had a governor that was ready to think, other governors would have justifiably played the victims card and just whine to you end.
I trust someone like Bleep to have stopped paying salaries in such a condition when he has someone to easily blame for the failure
